Google maps car hits a deer, records it all. Oh deer

Update: Google has responded and states "the deer was able to move and had left the area by the time the police arrived".

It's a sad fact that deer get hit by cars everyday but not everyday does a Google Maps car hit a deer and record the event. It's a sad fate for the deer but the entire event was recorded and uploaded to the live version of Google Maps.

You can attempt to view the picture here but that particular spot is being hit pretty hard by traffic; a screen capture is posted below.

The Google employee had to have known that they hit the deer but the more interesting thought is why did they proceed to upload the images? Is Google that determined to be the first to map the roads by street view that they don't care what goes live on their site?

Regardless this can be added to the long list of odd and funny things that have been caught on Google Maps.

Why do they look manipulated?
#2.1 Cøbra on 29 Jan 2009 - 21:45
Google Street View manipulates (or "photoshops") the photos to get rid of the vehicle that the camera is mounted on.
I'm guessing this is done (automatically?) by using some of the previous and next photos.

This reminded me of...

On the radio and news on TV today they mentioned about the Deer population rising and culls have increased to keep the numbers low.

Complaints of destruction and car accidents were mentioned.

I would like to point out to the motorist, to drive slow in high regions of Deer especially when you are
informed by many signs saying there are lose Deer and they may cross you path.

Remember the Deer were there before the road was built.

The motorist is trespassing on the Deers territory not the other way around.

So territory is handed out by when an animal moved into a region? Well then I guess we're all trespassing on the territory of bacteria. Give me a break.

bacteria are not animals.
pease check the definition of "animal"

His animal/bacteria fact is wrong, but his notion is valid.

Its not valid, bacteria feeds of humans. The deer was just walking when was brutally murdered by the evil company called google. lol

The vehicle path (white line) makes it look like they did. Nevertheless, they should not have used the footage.

Yes, it's just plain disturbing... not enough they ran over the deer, they had the bad taste to upload it.

Anyway, here are two less disturbing street view shots where no animals were hurt:

#8.2 Felosis on 30 Jan 2009 - 02:14
you do realize the upload process is nearly fully automated right?
only gotta browse the pics to make sure their not all colored out and have other glitches, imagine goingthrough your photos on your pc just *click* *click* *click*

Meh. It has eyes and ears, it should've heard the car coming towards it. I bet those PETA freaks will be all over this.

The smarter ones at least understand that when something bigger then you is rushing towards you that its probably not a good idea to stand still... natural selection

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means...

Meh. It has eyes and ears, it should've heard the car coming towards it.

It's obvious you haven't been in a situation like this.

Yes, they run, of course. But they often panic and start trying to run along the street, and not out of the way. And a car goes way faster than a deer.
#12.5 DanielZ on 30 Jan 2009 - 19:14
This is Darwin's theory in effect, ladies and gentlemen. The dumber deer get run over, while the smarter ones survive.
#13 +micwa on 29 Jan 2009 - 21:33
I'm confused - who hit the deer?
#14 Shadrack on 29 Jan 2009 - 21:36

Actually you can see the spots on the deer, meaning its a baby.

Google Killed Bambi

I can see Pamela Anderson and the rest of PETA, calling for a boycott of Google.

But if the see the deer coming could they not just stop, and let the animal cross the street?

What kind of sick ****s does Google have working for them.
#16.1 Memnochxx on 29 Jan 2009 - 22:44
You're right. I'm sure the deer had been standing there for 10 minutes and they just plowed it down. There's no way it ran right in front of the car.
#16.2 voidpharoh on 30 Jan 2009 - 07:03
A deer can run very fast, I'd estimate up to 25 - 30 mph. In forested areas, it's hard to see the deer as it runs across the road. While the driver of the car may be able to apply his brakes as he notices the deer, that does not mean the car can actually stop before colliding with the animal.

Also deer tend to react irrationally around vehicles. I've seen many deer already out of harms way react badly to an oncoming vehicle, even occasionally the deer will change opposite directions to run directly into the path of the vehicle.
#17 indiansboy94 on 29 Jan 2009 - 22:11
I can't believe they still uploaded this!

#20 AeronPrometheus on 30 Jan 2009 - 00:33
Google could not have chosen a better road to do it on.

Five Points!
#21 PatrynXX on 30 Jan 2009 - 02:31
Sorta removed it. They blacked the streetviews of anything resembling a deer. However there is a blurry deer still left on 832 Five Points Rd all they need to do is blur the incident out. sheesh.

It looks like he hit the deer, braked, got out and moved the deer off the road, then kept going?!
#25.1 AnarKhy on 30 Jan 2009 - 07:46
Or they hit the deer, the poor animal fall in the asphalt, recovered, tried to get back to the woods but had an aneurism and died...
#26 Skullpture on 30 Jan 2009 - 10:24
Funny title, kind of sad photos. No one is safe anymore, not while Google is in the skies. The Justice System will be eased with GM.

A few years ago (actually about 8 ) me and an ex girlfriend hit a deer while driving home (we live in London, how surprised were we?!!!! ).
It was almost impossible to avoid the animal, we were not driving fast but any action on our part to avoid it would have ended with us upside-down in a ditch or smashed into trees.
We went full pelt into the beast, there was a sickening crunch and a Deer bouncing off down the road behind us. Well we pulled up and got out to see what we could do, It stood up gave me what i swear was a dirty look and then legged it off.

Two points from this story...
1) Deer are stronger than you think
2) Don't blame the driver, often incidents like this can be impossible to avoid

In our case Deer 1 - Car 0
#27.1 Magallanes on 30 Jan 2009 - 16:53
Accidents happens and nobody can blame the driver (if it wasn't on purpose) but to take a photo for amusement is despicable.
