Windows 7 RC details came first, then we had Motorola CEO stating that Windows Mobile 7 will not be ready until 2010. And now we have Mary-Jo Foley predicting the possible Windows Mobile roadmap. Even though Windows Mobile officials refuse to talk about specific shipping dates, Foley has managed to get some details from her sources at Microsoft.

According to Foley, below is the roadmap:
  • Windows Mobile 6.5 RTM (release to manufacturing): April 2009
  • First Windows Mobile 6.5 devices from cell phone makers: September 2009
  • Windows Mobile 7.0 release to testers: November 2009
  • First Windows Mobile 7.0 devices from cell phone makers: April 2010

Microsoft hasn't yet even officially announced Windows Mobile 6.5, but this OS update is most likely be announced at Mobile World Congress in a couple weeks. Not to forget that Microsoft has also been working on products codenamed SkyBox, SkyLine and SkyMarket, which we revealed as the answer to Apple's MobileMe . The final offerings are likely to be named under the Windows Live branding.

In the meantime, you can keep guessing the dates or enjoy the (leaked) Windows Mobile 6.5 screenshots

April, eh. Quite a while to go yet.

If they are releasing 7 next year it may be too late..

..not sure if 6.5 will even help, but I have my fingers crossed.

Winmo 6.5 has to atleast keep up with current mobile platforms. If it fails i can see it already loosing market share.

They're isn't one (Non WM) device on the market that can live up to that , Fanboys say these things arnt needed but ill be the judge of that not some elitist n00b with a fisher price my first PDA phone ...

Agreed, plus Windows Mobile has had a mature app scene for almost the decade, so the possibilities are nigh-limitless.

I wish open source development was more prominent on WM, but most of the essentials are there. Music, games, movies, dictionaries, periodic tables, themes, alternate input methods, Notepad, and the list goes on...

Ugly and out-dated UI, Check.

Actually, I agree with you. I own a N82 and kicks the crap out of all most everything. WM can actually do quite a lot, my boy has the 800W and he can remotely log-in from anywhere he has a connection to fix a problem or get a file.

The problem with Windows Mobile has never really been the OS itself (although it could use some refreshment) but the hardware it gets put on either is flaky or never works 100% with the stuff it can do.

Plus the majority of devices never get updated so bugs just stay bugs. Microsoft build an update service into WM6, but I cannot recall it ever getting used on any of the WM6 devices I used.

I'm willing to put up with a lot of fuss on my desktop, because its what I do, but my phone I expect to work nearly flawlessly all the time because its my primary point of communication. My iPhone with rare exception has done that and all of the WM phones I've owned have not. I would switch back to WM in a heart beat if it worked as well as the iPhone.

WM7 needs speed optimizations. And a lot of them.

What can pretty much be assumed about a WM Smartphone? That it's slow, compared to the competition. Work on that, then UI updates (ease-of-use, taskbar, a more convenient way to actually close apps), then the bling bling, and we'll see. Sure, blame the providers with inferior hardware all you want, but in that case MS should set higher minimum requirements like they did with Vista for a "certified" status. Because it just isn't pretty; WM is gaining a pretty bad rep these days.

So it'll take MS *another* year to catch up to where the major player(s) are at right now. Unless WinMo 7 will include enhancements from what's rumoured to be in WinMo 8.

Blah blah blah...cannot wait until Apple gets to big for their own good.

This is nothing new, MS always predicts release dates WAY ahead of time and never meet them. This is why there should be no speculations on when something will be released. I am will to bet that Apple, Symantec, Adobe..whoever else fails to reach their initial release date...they just dont advertise it.

Another silly comment from LTD , Windows Mobile has no catching up to do its a strong platform in its sixth generation its used in devices all over the world . It is the most powerful mobile os on the planet simply because it is based on a full desktop port of windows for ARM platforms .

Windows Mobiles OUTSOLD ShIPhones this year by 4.5 Million units, So thanks for your input LTD but with all due respect you havnt the slightest clue about PDA's or PDA Phones. Good luck however youll need it if Apple are going to catch up with windows mobiles .

Oh and as a parting message , Here are a few screens i took in the takeaway just an example of where copy and paste , multitasking and a lightning fast net connection come in handy : )

Good luck doing that on a ShIPhone , This post was made form a HTC TyTn II

Calm down buddy. 'Been using wimo devices for quite some time and even though wimo is jack of all trades, it is master of none.

it handles all those things named previously, it just fails to do them in an efficient and user friendly manner. There is also the issue of stability - I am pretty reluctant to entrust all my precious data to such a device. Been there, done that.

Original PDA's running WiMo were okay, quite stable and usable. Hell, I even still use my old Pocket Loox 720. But phones? WiMo simply isn't there yet. In order to get the wimo based phone you have to tweak it and install lot's of usually non-free sw. That isn't what I really like - I pretty much expect the device to work right out of the box - so far tough luck. I always had to tweak the mobile and even after that it wasn't what I expected.

On the contrary - iPhone isn't jack of all trades though it is master of some. And that is what counts for most of the users. Not well spread mediocrity (in user friendliness, gui and effectiveness of basic phone operations), but rather well focused mastery in those features where it really counts.

*And no, I do not own an iPhone - I find it too restricting.

So, basically, we're all screwed until next year unless the Palm Pre turns out to be an iPhone killer. Crap.
