Canon announces 2009 PowerShot lineup

Canon has just announced its 2009 PowerShot lineup which includes ten new models. In today's announcement the company has outlined three new technological breakthroughs that most of the lineup will feature.

The first feature is Canon's exclusive DIGIC 4 Image Processor. This technology improves processing speed drastically as well as improves image quality. The new processor also paves the path for Canon's new Smart AUTO feature, which automatically adjusts focus, white balance, and exposure. The second feature, which we've all been waiting for, is blink detection. Using already implemented face detection functionality, blink detection functionality will automatically alert users after a photo is taken if someone's eyes were closed. The last new feature, along with many others, is Active Display. Most people who want to look through their pictures want to breeze through them quickly. So with this new Active Display, it takes a simple flick of the wrist to browse through all of your photos. However if this doesn't seem appealing, the normal click wheel is available on most models.

Just to let you know - SX1-IS has been available in Europe for quite some time now (I didn't check the other models). This announcement is Canon-USA-specific (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-SX1-Digital-Camera/dp/B001FWYTAE).

$600 is kinda high for that SX1 IS. you've been able to get it on ebay for almost $700. since its been out in Europe for awhile, I was kinda hoping canon would have a new model for the United States this year. It doesn't have much over the panasonic lumix FZ28 as far as IQ. it does have some improvements for taking video, such as 720p vs. 1080p, and stereo sound vs. mono. unless it drops down to $400, I don't see much point buying it over the FZ28 since the 28 is $300

I have to agree with you. That is not an impressive move at all. As you say, it has been available for a while, I expected the price to be well under $600.00 or else it be higher resolution with a higher zoom as Olympus and Kodak have done in that arena with their latest offerings.

Hmmmmm...just a quick compare to the Kodak Z980...The Canon has...
Lower Mega Pixels
Lower Zoom Range
NO RAW Format
A smaller LCD
No vertical shutter release
...a price $200.00 higher than the Kodak Z980

I like Canon's, but this is a big disappointment when I look at bang for the buck.

You might want to go read here -- http://www.dpreview.com/news/0902/09021807...mwareupdate.asp -- the did add RAW.

Higher MPixels does NOT mean a better camera, it usually means more noise in the photos as a given ISO level.

Also, if you want all what you mentioned, go get an SLR (and for that price you can!!).

The RAW was just announced, but it actually is not yet available. Still, you can get more camera for a lot less., or even go DSLR. It doesn't change $600 being too pricey for what the SX1 offers and what it is. It should have had RAW from the get go. They want a premium price for a super zoom, it should be loaded to the gills and leading the pack.

I got a Canon Rebel XS w/2 crappy-yet-decent lenses for $399 2 months ago.
How is this better except for having movie mode?

I'm almost certainly going to get one of these... Either the A2100 or A1100 I guess... Always liked Canon cameras - good user interface and good photos.

I've been using my Canon Powershot G2 since I bought it in 2001. I can't believe the amount of abuse that thing has taken, yet I've never had any problems with it. I still haven't found a nice portable camera that can deliver anywhere near the image quality that this one can, unfortunately. I thought for sure that in eight years they could shrink the G2's guts into a pocket sized model.
