The US was secretly flying unmanned drones from the Shamsi airbase in Pakistan's southwestern province of Baluchistan as early as 2006, according to an image of the base from Google Earth.

The image that is no longer on the site but which was obtained by The News, Pakistan's English language daily newspaper shows what appear to be three Predator drones outside a hangar at the end of the runway. The Times also obtained a copy of the image, whose co-ordinates confirm that it is the Shamsi airfield, also known as Bandari, about 200 miles southwest of the Pakistani city of Quetta.

This is why all airfields and military bases should not be in Google Earth. While there is no ill intent with this project it could quite easily compromise the national security of any nation (friendly or hostile). I personally don't think that kind of material for any country should be available for everyone to view. There are those who will disagree with me but that is my belief.

Again I am only speaking of military bases and airfields. All other areas are fair game.

Personally, I think that anything that is publically viewable by other means, is fair game on Google Earth.

I was not only speaking of Google Earth but of all online maps as well. The point that I'm making is what is in these locations are not viewable by another means. All military bases and airfields are restricted no-fly zones and have secured gates.

These satellite images can reveal troop and equipment build up or deployment and show a vulnerability to a source that wouldn't otherwise be able to find such data. Yes large countries that have spy satellites can easily see everything here. But a terrorist organization with not a lot of capital can now see the entire structure and layout of restricted facilities.

not exactly secret.

I don't see anything wrong with showing military bases on google maps. They shows ours bright as day but don't have street view in them because it's private. Only reason why they shouldn't is if they have something to hide which is illegal ?

Its only a snapshot and not updated constantly so any information present would likely change soon after. Its not like intelligence agencies for other countries don't have access to this information already.

why does it matter? I though America was constantly watching the internet for people looking at stuff like this or googling for "how to make a bomb" e.t.c.
