Windows Mobile 6.5 is slowly coming up to a public release, however discussions have already begun about the next iteration; Windows Mobile 7. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said that the 7th iteration of Microsoft's popular mobile OS will be released to manufacturing next year.

WM Power User reported the news, which was announced at a Microsoft conference call earlier today, and was stated alongside Ballmer's thoughts that the growing popularity of smartphones is going to greatly help WinMo in the future, despite the economy woes at the moment. Ballmer also said that Windows Mobile will get more and more shared technology with Windows, bringing in technology such as, "browsers, presentation services, and even, in the future, the kernel, and that the amount of shared technology will only increase over time." Perhaps by presentation services, he is referring to Silverlight.

Lastly, Ballmer confirmed that Microsoft will not be producing a Microsoft Phone, but only sticking to the phone operating systems. For more information, keep your eyes peeled as more Windows Mobile information is released.

I almost had a heart attack just the when I first saw this. I misread it and thought it just said Windows 7. Pheww, I seriously hope we won't have to wait that long. Anyways I don't really think that many people at least in the UK use windows mobile.
#1.1 Chris-Gonzales on 25 Feb 2009 - 04:21
Many dont have such a device, and if they do, it would be a blackberry and its OS, or an iPhone.
#1.2 TheNay on 25 Feb 2009 - 04:48
I read it the same way! LOL! I was like what ohh mobile, haha!
#1.3 FloatingFatMan on 25 Feb 2009 - 08:08
You'd be surprised, actually. Sure, not many of the regular Joe's in the street have one, most will have a Nokia or an LG or similar, but in the business world WinMo is VERY popular thanks to its versatility and ability to syn with Exchange and so on.

FloatingFatMan is defintiely right, the last 4 companies I've worked for have issued staff with WinMo devices, as they're great for business and very easy to rapidly develop applications for, as well as being great for office applications. Plus, it's been like this for many years, as PDAs were used years before Smart Phones/iPhones were even conceived, and Blackberrys used to be just for the executives. I've been programming them for the last 8 years, and love the fact I can bang an application together in less than an hour now for one.

I think you're definitely right in saying that the majority of non-business people do not have them, but for professionals it's the opposite.

Windows Mobile is becoming a LOT moer popular. Thing is, a lot of users don't even know it, they just see a "phone"...
#1.8 Chris-Gonzales on 25 Feb 2009 - 17:12
They see a "phone" but think its aimed at business users. (windows mobile 6.0 and earlier) The iPhone, on the other hand has a UI, while basic (no background on home screen :rolleyes it still is far ahead of windows mobile, and I believe even father then 6.5 (the look just doesnt suit me, but I'll have to see it in person before I say anymore rubbish)
#1.9 +bob21 on 25 Feb 2009 - 18:31

Like i said before , the Samsung Omania sold 11 million units in 2007 compared to 14 million apple units .

That should put things into perspective

I can see that someones RSS is set to a particular website.

If you're referring to me I don't use RSS feeds. I just have a look every couple of hours. I mainly look out for window 7 updates especially news on leaked builds.

Ah O2 XDA people hello ? , The PDA Phone was born in the UK thanks to 02 and HTC , Good to see the yearly releases are going to plan.

I know we ask for this every time but oh well , Give us a functional Taskbar and kill the SIP for devices with hardware keyboards .

If only device makers didn't take so long to bring out new WinMo phones. If 6.5 RTMs in April or w/e but it takes till Nov for new phones to come out then that doesn't help much.

In this case I blame the phone makers more than MS.

At MWC it was revealed we wouldnt see devices released running WinMo 6.5 till Q4 this year, therefore I would hardly be expecting to see WinMo7 on many devices before 2011. For those of us who enjoy ROM cooking those seems probably by mid next year we will have leaked roms floating around.

I am hoping it would be revolutionary since competition from alternative OSes has really kicked in the past year, and that it would be as polished as its desktop counterpart is, since I may be getting a PDA in the coming year. Looking forward to (hopefully) good news on this OS.

That is WinMo 6.5 though. not 7
#5.3 Chris-Gonzales on 25 Feb 2009 - 15:32
Still, the 6.5 UI will carry on to 7
#5.4 GP007 on 25 Feb 2009 - 15:37
Maybe it will, maybe it won't. You don't know at this point.
#5.5 Chris-Gonzales on 25 Feb 2009 - 17:13
Trust me, I dont think they will introduce 2 new UI's right after another. They want to have all their mobile platphones match, (meaning the zune will get an update)

#7.2 +dead.cell on 25 Feb 2009 - 14:49
Hey, his phone can be "cool" all it wants; doesn't mean he's "cool".

May be, if the $99 iPhone rumor is true....

How many times did they say they were never going to produce an MP3 player before they brought out the Zune?
I think a Microsoft Phone or Zune Phone will definitely happen by 2011
#8.1 Chris-Gonzales on 25 Feb 2009 - 17:15
If they are smart, they will create one device (microsoft branded, like the mice and keyboards) of both a phone, and a media player . none of this, "3rd party" crap. (though they still can have the OS port to other devices, I'm saying a microsoft branded one
#9 Antaris on 25 Feb 2009 - 10:22
Apparently from the tech ive been reading the last couple of days, WinMo 7 will still be an incremental update on 6.5, but (not sure how much of this to believe), WinMo 8 will be based on Midori?
#10 sorlag on 25 Feb 2009 - 13:17
Nice.
What will they include?

Interesting how Microsoft almost gave up with Windows CE, now they are scrabbling to catch up. From the brief look at an Apple iTouch (and so I guess iPhone) they are in deep diddly. How a company can go from hero to zero in such a few years... "Microsoft - too little too late."
#11.1 Chris-Gonzales on 25 Feb 2009 - 15:34
iPOD touch, not iTouch.....
#11.2 +bob21 on 25 Feb 2009 - 15:38
The shIPhone lacks cut & paste, MMS, video camera, MP3 ringtones, A2DP, andexternal storage. I'd say that puts them about 20 years behind the average Winmo device.

Interesting to hear you say microsoft is catching up , remind me again who was it that ditched their line of mp3 players did a complete 180 and started producing pda's ?

Blame steve for that.

I believe most, if not all of those will come this year.

but its no where near "20" years behind, that will be 1989 and in 1989 we still used bricks for cell phones with 6 foot long attends...
#11.4 +bob21 on 25 Feb 2009 - 17:58
How original i can honestly say ive never heard that before, Usually they try to say that these things arnt needed .

Using sarcasm as a substitute for intelligence .
