iPods and iPhones are not allowed in the Gates home

Advertisement (Why?)
When your father is one of the richest persons in the world life can't be too bad right? Having direct access to all sorts of Microsoft goodies like a copy of Windows 7, an Xbox 360, and Microsoft Surface, how bad can it really be?

Well it's bad if you're a fan of Apple. Melinda Gates reveled in an interview that "[t]here are very few things that are on the banned list in our household. But iPods and iPhones are two things we don't get for our kids."

Melinda does state though that she has been tempted by the iPhone by saying "[e]very now and then I look at my friends and say 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone'"

Do you think its right for the Gates family to ban products from a competitor from their household? It makes you wonder if Steve Jobs bans Microsoft products from his household too.

That's ..... stupid.

... and then there's an alternative world where Bill and his family are all using iPhone and then this news spreads through the net... everyone would be mocking them...
#1.2 xpclient on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:41
Better than Ballmer prohibiting his children from using Google. Kumo for ' Ballmer kids Google '

It's not stupid, it doesn't give a good message if his kids use a rival companies product now does it? and considering the stir (i.e. mocking) caused by the picture of Bill using a MacBook a few years ago, I don't blame him.
#1.4 cybertimber2008 on 02 Mar 2009 - 22:22
What would people think if Jobs used a Microsoft product? (Other than office of course)

@ cybertimber2008

I personally wouldn't care. Its stupid that people make such a big deal out of that

I agree, if anyone in his family got one of those products the media and all the stupid bloggers would tear them to pieces over it.
#1.9 brent3000 on 03 Mar 2009 - 02:16
not really... If you guess how they would have everything set up (windows server, Media Center, outlook, exchange) surely they would want like widows Mobile or ZUNE to allow 100% intergration into there home network...

Seeing as its reported on a media god knows whats missing out of it or what part they will make bolder than others.
#1.10 +Odom on 03 Mar 2009 - 07:25
Since the article doesn't state any reason of why these articles are banned, it leaves everything open for speculation.
#1.11 Beastage on 03 Mar 2009 - 11:00
Of course Ballmer has kids, 3 of them, been married since 1990.

Unlike you, Ballmer is the CEO of the world's largest software company.

Oh, I understand that. I currently have Word for Mac open on my MacBook, but keep in mind, Microsoft develops iPhone applications, yet they're not allowed There's some food for thought.

Jobs married Laurene Powell, on March 18, 1991. Presiding over the wedding was the Zen Buddhist monk Kobun Chino Otogowa.[42] The couple have three children. Jobs also has a daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs (born 197, from his relationship with Bay Area painter Chrisann Brennan.[43] She briefly raised their daughter on welfare when Jobs denied paternity, claiming that he was sterile; he later acknowledged paternity.[43] Lisa Brennan-Jobs is a journalist who wrote for The Harvard Crimson, and Apple's Lisa Computer was named for her.

since he denied paternity, she probalby gave the girl her own last name, and when he finally calimed paternity, they probably just added jobs to her name.

This one is even worse. Can a man or woman not simply refuse to buy a product based on their own opinion? Furthermore, he didn't state whether it was just because it was an Apple product. He didn't say anything about other Apple products, but hey, even if he did, so what? He's free to his opinion, and if he doesn't want something, he doesn't have to buy it!

With the economic situation at hand, did anyone stop to think maybe money is an issue?

I don't care for iTunes, nor the limitations imposed by having to use it. Also the Apple products are quite expensive and have an mp3 player that doesn't plenty for me and don't need a fancy flat phone with a touch screen.

its for sure a business issue, if the press caught a photo of bill's kids or wife with an apple product it would show to investors he doesn't have faith or believe his company is of superior quality and the competitors are a better choice. he's trying to save his own ass and his bank account. theres a reason why he's the richest...mad business skillz
#6.1 Lowdown on 02 Mar 2009 - 19:47
Actually that makes a lot of sense to me. Even though the Gates family isn't really a huge paparazzi target I could see if there was a picture of someone in his family with a Apple product it could be used against him or Microsoft.

Actually I think Buffett is in the lead right now. They have been alternating spots since the economy is going up and down and down and up and down and down.
#7.4 Rolith on 02 Mar 2009 - 19:03
the "mexican" that's the richest guy on earth hadn't managed to legitimize a lot of his holdings/earnings and his position was extremely dubious... as for if Gates' still the richest... I don't think he cares nearly as much as most nerds do. I'm going to bet he's trying to cash out and donate as much as is reasonably possible before he's looking at retirement/dealing with massive estate taxes that could quite literally kill the economy if his estate has to pay them. ("Bill Gates' Estate had to sell 90% of it's holdings in Microsoft operation to settle back taxes... the Dow is now at 700, not 7000, 700.")

I would think that being someone that has made all his money through technology, he would respect good tech, no matter where it came from.

If he hates the iPhone/iPod, create something that beats it.

When I was younger, I was a huge Gates fan, and I still have a lot of respect for him, but this is dumb.
#8.1 sOftGuRu on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:14
not necessarily....microsoft r doing so many things....its not bad to not have something rather than having something which is bad

"good tech, no matter where it came from... If he hates the iPhone/iPod, create something that beats it"

Already done: Zune, Windows Mobile

While a great businessman however, Gates is apparently no good with marketing
#8.3 episode on 02 Mar 2009 - 21:48
The Zune is a decent enough mp3 player, but the iPod, as you said, is not the best mp3 player, just the best marketed.

WinMo, on the other hand, sucks.

2% of $58 Billion still is a lot of money. Not sure if that's US Billion or Uk Billion though.

in dutch we still use it

million = miljoen = 1,000,000
billion = miljard = 1000*million
whatever = biljoen = miljoen * miljoen

It makes sense, which is probably why the americans changed it :p

im assuming its banned, as belinda said during an interview that when she sees her friends iPhones, shes like "[e]very now and then I look at my friends and say 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone'"

wouldn't say that unless it was banned.

but i understand why it is, would undermine the whole business ( aka we will make/sell it but not use it ) , especially since MS does MP3Players / Phone OS's )

i agree with Bill/Melinda's decision, its theirs to make. and figured it was common sense that they wouldn't use them, same with about a 0% chance they own a PS3

Well if you were the owner of a big company and used the competitors product at home I am sure a lot of people here would bash him for that too. Honestly how many of you have seen pics of Macs supposedly being used in a Microsoft office and the bashing and arguments that follow ? If he used competitors product at home and everyone finds out it will have a big negative impact on the company. So he is caring for something he created. I don't see anything wrong with that.
(2 replies) #22 DanielZ on 02 Mar 2009 - 19:35

(Joking about the Zune part)

And you the only one to buy a Mac.
#22.2 Chris-Gonzales on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:10
Zune has nothing really? Sharing songs? big deal, that could have been added in the 3rd or 4th verson, after people actully bought the product and knows about it. FM tuner? meh, brown? YUCK

a software that doesnt work?
(6 replies) #23 SweetRiverBaynes on 02 Mar 2009 - 19:59
But it is because there are Microsoft alternatives. Before Zunes, I'm sure Bill had an iPod. There was no real better alternative at the time made by Microsoft. Everything before the Zune was crappy if it wasn't an iPod. Why would they have settled for a crappy MP3 player.
#23.1 C_Guy on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:15
Ever hear of a word called research?

Cowon makes superior MP3 players to any iPod and there were other brands before Apple and Microsoft's.

Does the word Creative mean anything to you?
#23.2 Magallanes on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:18
Yes, Bill is richest so he can buy the best gadget around here, ipod is not on the top of the list.

#23.3 SweetRiverBaynes on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:19
Ohh that's right! I forgot Creative had a 4% market share in the MP3 department. It really is superior!
#23.4 +Hell-In-A-Handbasket on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:32
i just read reviews of the cowon devices, their not superior and the reviews said look somewhere else until the UI/price get a makeover

and creatives devices arent even close
#23.5 Silverskull on 03 Mar 2009 - 02:47
Right, so marketshare is definitely an indication of a superior product, even if that product is so well-known that many people aren't even aware of any alterrnatives. Right.

Hell-In-A-Handbasket, the Cowon devices don't seem to be all that great, yes. What do you have against the Creative devices though?
#23.6 CalumJR on 03 Mar 2009 - 04:17
@Silverskull -

I had 2 Creative MP3 players and both broke of their own accord within about 4 months.

I have had 3 or 4 iPods (I tend to get one everytime they are updated) and not one has broken.
(16 replies) #24 C_Guy on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:14
A lot of extreme opinions for a simple household rule.

I employ the same rule at my house. I prefer superior products so iPod and iPhone are not permitted.
#24.1 Ledgem on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:36
So he says, seemingly without realizing that "superior" is a subjective term...
#24.2 +Hell-In-A-Handbasket on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:38

wow a Phone thats geard for business users has features that a non-business phone has
thats astounding

how many already owned mp3's can you put on it or do you have to repurchase them all ?
headphone Jack ?
Feature Expandability ?
App Support ?
yes app and feature are seperate for a reason.

i dont have an iPhone, and wont touch it cause of ATT, but i do have a Touch, and i can do more with my touch then that HTC can.

im pretty shure with exception of the tactile keyboard/copy paste you can do them all on the iPhone also with the App Store, yes even Multi-Task ( diffrent programs already do this )

and because you just put yes on the music thing is that to assume that you have to repurchase all your music ? as the put mp3's on it wasnt a yes or no question it was a internal storage question
#24.9 Chris-Gonzales on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:11
Thats just a rumor.

also another rumor says multi-tasking will come to the iphone. just needs that new processor
#24.10 +bob21 on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:16
On the device
"app store"Its called the Windows Mobile Marketplace and its been around for a long , long time
Its just copy and paste , Copy the music from your PC to your PDA phone . Magic , The touch pro 2 uses external storage if you want a device wih flash internal storage buy one.
#24.11 +Hell-In-A-Handbasket on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:32
wish it was as easy as you say with my winmobile, just to get contacts over had to get a copy of Outlook ( i use Thunderbird ) and after the trial of Office ran out, anything regarding contacts has to be done manually as outlook express wont sync to it. and multiple My Documents Folders for the user and phone

aka stuff in User/my doc wont be in user/mydoc/mymobiledoc which gets syncd to the phone, not mydoc which is the default for almost every win app on the planet

and where is the Windows Mobile Marketplace, last i heard it wasnt out yet, but that was back in augest of 08, each carrier has a app store and it differs for each carrier ( didnt see much in sprints )
#24.12 +bob21 on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:38
+1 for using the full version of outlook that comes with your device

ClickedyClick Same place its been for half a decade although PPCwarez has a better selection...
#24.13 +Hell-In-A-Handbasket on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:53
was just going to edit my post finding it, and its been there alot less then 5 years as far as i know
#24.14 /- Razorfold on 03 Mar 2009 - 00:53
Um...for syncing files, when you connect your windows mobile phone to your computer it asks you what you want to sync, which folders you want to sync etc.

Copy and paste is not a business feature.
Multi-tasking is not a business feature.
Office suite is not a business feature.

Music = copy and paste, no stupid itunes (which may be good on mac but on windows its gotta be the worst program ever made)

External storage with microsd upto 16gb at the moment, with a 32gb card in the works.

As for apps, theres tons of windows mobile apps out there. Sure the iphone may have more, but lets be honest how many iphone apps are useful...

Can you skin your iphone to the extent you can with windows mobile? Change the interface to suit your preference? Custom roms? Blackberry connect? Autofocus camera?
#24.15 Chris-Gonzales on 03 Mar 2009 - 02:42
No one really cares for such fetures
#24.16 +bob21 on 03 Mar 2009 - 11:18
Thats what you people said about GPS and when apple added crappy AGPS suddenly it became essental .

Your not fooling anyone weve had 3 years of this bullcrap , Its just positive spin . I guess thats why 20 million people chose Windows Mobiles in 2008 ...

I think it's more a matter of believing in the product that you sell.

I doubt the owner of Coca~Cola and the upper echelon of the company, would be caught in public drinking Pepsi Cola... it just wouldn't look right.

Besides, his house - his rules.
#25.1 Ledgem on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:40
You're probably right, but that's a bit foolish and prideful, don't you think? If I'm selling a product and I'm in direct competition with another product, wouldn't it be wise to sample the other product and get a sense of what they're trying to do and where they're going with it? For example, here the iPod is insanely popular. Microsoft is in competition with them. Rather than covering your eyes every time you come across an iPod, wouldn't it be a bit wiser to try and use an iPod yourself, see what the experience is like? Even if you didn't think it offered anything over your own product, you're not your only customer (one would hope, anyway) - everyone is different. Figuring out why a competitor's product is clicking so well with the general populace while yours isn't - I'd think that's the first step to making dramatic improvements in your own product's market share, regardless of what industry you're in.
#25.2 thevink on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:52
@Ledgem
Yeah, but they probably have a division in Microsoft for exactly that purpose, wouldn't you think?
#25.3 ajua on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:00
Some time ago i had a discussion with a friend who works for a beer company here in Mexico and he always drank the competition's brand before his new job.

Then i went to his house and he had the beer he was selling in his fridge. I told him that its his house and he can always drink the one he likes at least in his home. The discussion ended but he still drinks the ones from his job at home.

It would be different for Bill's kids to use iPhones or iPods because they can be seen in public and the media will feast off it.

Actually [they] refer to it as "black water" - you cant even say the word "Pepsi"
#26 +techbeck on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:32
I would do the same thing. What would the market/people think if Gates family bought an iPod over a Zune or a iPhone over a Windows Mobile phone? Thats pretty much saying that what you make isnt as good as the other stuff.
(4 replies) #27 m.keeley on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:43
Totally up to them. It would be a pretrty sad day if other people could dictate what brands you could or could not buy.
#27.1 Chris-Gonzales on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:05
If we live in hitler era, thats the way it will be. People are stupid when telling othewrs what they can and can't buy.
#27.2 Athernar on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:52
Congrats, you just invoked Godwin's law. On a completely unrelated topic too. :/
#27.3 Chris-Gonzales on 03 Mar 2009 - 00:12
If you read who I responded to, you'll know...
#27.4 Athernar on 03 Mar 2009 - 01:05
I did.

I still don't see the correlation or need to invoke Godwin here. I think you might of wanted to use "Big brother" instead.
#28 Digix on 02 Mar 2009 - 20:44
I believe it's fair enough when got that much money and that many connections in microsoft the alternatives that support them outweigh the iphone easily.
#29 +techbeck on 02 Mar 2009 - 21:09
This is just like parents saying no guns in the house...or saying you cannot watch a certain show. When they get older and move out on their own, then its their choice on what to buy. As long as they live at home, then they are under different rules and must follow them.
(1 reply) #30 dwayne dibbley on 02 Mar 2009 - 21:17
good for him, they've been banned from my house for ages
#30.1 Chris-Gonzales on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:13
But if your kids bought one with their own money, you would make them return them? I can just see WWIII start...
(1 reply) #31 dhruva on 02 Mar 2009 - 21:26
His House His rule.. if he doesnt like it then so be it. who are we to judge and tell him to do what he likes.

We arn't. your going a bit overboard
(1 reply) #32 Gabe3 on 02 Mar 2009 - 21:39
Well he says he doesn't get them for his kids, that means he doesn't buy them, that doesn't mean it's not allowed in his house, I'm sure hid kids could buy a ipod or iphone with their own money and he would be fine with it.

Exactly. I dont see gates shunning his kids and saying "your not my kid anymore" just because they bought an ipod.

Does he kick out guests that have apple products to?

I have this rule in effect too. When the price if iPhone is low enough, I have to unban myself from using iPhone.

I've lived 26 years with out needed or wanting anything apple. I could do just fine in that family
#35.1 Chris-Gonzales on 02 Mar 2009 - 22:58
Technically, you only NEED 3 things in life:

Food, water and shelter.

Everything else is a "want"

#35.2 m.keeley on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:19
The opposite would be equally valid, someone could have lived 26 years without needing or wanting anything Microsoft. Neither is right or wrong, it's called freedom of choice.
#35.3 Chris-Gonzales on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:28
Yes, but its also getting it right. We don't "need" windows. We "want" Windows. but we can survive and live with out windows (the OS)
(1 reply) #36 Raa on 02 Mar 2009 - 22:59
iPhone? Cut me a break.
iPod? Yeah, okay, I can grant that one

But look at what the article said - they simply didn't buy them for the kids. Where did it say that they BANNED them from having one?

Your the one making it a big deal.
#39 m.keeley on 02 Mar 2009 - 23:22
Besides being freedom of choice, think of the headlines if they chose to use Apple products it would effectively be saying that they're superior to Microsoft ones. Whether that is true or not isn't the point it would damage Microsoft.

Gee, you think John Mackey (CEO of Whole Foods Market) has Diet Coke in the fridge?
#42.1 Chris-Gonzales on 03 Mar 2009 - 00:28
Why not?

I used to work at mcdonalds and I ate at competition. Does that mean I comited a sin? please
#42.2 m.keeley on 03 Mar 2009 - 00:35
Yes but you were "just" an employee that's not the same as a high profile person being seen to prefer a competitors products.
#42.3 SiLeNtDeAtH on 03 Mar 2009 - 01:31
Chris-Gonzales on 02 Mar 2009 - 19:28

Working at McDonalds and eating at Jack-In-the-Box is comparing hamburgers to hamburgers.

Diet Coke and Whole Foods are NOT competitors. John Mackey having diet coke his fridge after he spent almost 30 years building a "organic and natural foods" company would make him a big hipocrite.

Dude - you have comments all over the place on here - do you actually still have a job, or did McDonalds fire you for eating a Taco Bell?
#42.4 Chris-Gonzales on 03 Mar 2009 - 02:47
I only mention mcdonalds. Nothing about Whole foods and diet coke.

There is such thing as a "day off"
#43 TEX4S on 03 Mar 2009 - 00:35
Kinda funny if you ask me...

Its kinda like not being able to have friends who are better looking than you are...

All of a sudden that Zune looks pretty cool

I'm not sure how everyone else was raised, but when I was growing up we had a list of banned things from our house as well. It's up to the parents as to what they want their kids to have, and what not to have. I don't hear anyone complaining that parents are banning their kids from watching porn, so what's the big deal when iPods and iPhones are not allowed in the Gates' house?

RebelSean --

This is different -- Bill and Melinda arent saying their kids cant have cellphones or MP3 players, they are banning a particular brand

Yours and my parents might have banned cigarettes when we were youn, but they didnt say "no Marlboro !!"
#47.1 Chris-Gonzales on 03 Mar 2009 - 02:46

Think of the public image of the Gates kid using iPods. Think of the stocks that would be dramatically effected almost immediately. I don't think Jobs would encourage his kids to buy Zunes or the like.
#48.1 Chris-Gonzales on 03 Mar 2009 - 02:46
Do we even hear of their kids? No.
#49 FrozenEclipse on 03 Mar 2009 - 02:04
Look at it this way. If the Gates household used Apple products, that would just be fodder for all the Apple fanboys to jump on. ZOMG EVEN BILLY GATES USES APPLE. APPLE FTW!
#50 TakeNothingBack on 03 Mar 2009 - 03:44
Makes sense, just buy a Windows Mobile?
#51 Tha Bloo Monkee on 03 Mar 2009 - 06:23
I really don't see the big deal. Why would you buy your competitors products for your children? It doesn't make sense.
#52 lylesback2 on 03 Mar 2009 - 16:48
Im sure each kid in their childrens school has a Zune..
#53 themailnurse on 03 Mar 2009 - 19:22
banning inferior/overrated products is normal practice
#54 Skullpture on 03 Mar 2009 - 20:32
I'd prefer a free Zune than an overpriced Apple MP3 player anyday.

Is it really proper of everyone to judge someone else's parenting/household?

It's a personal choice. Get out of their lives, it doesn't really concern ANY of us to be honest.
