As expected Apple has upgraded a few of its products today. New updates to the Mac Mini, iMac and Mac Pro are now live on Apple's website. You can check out the new products here.

Apple has kept to its standard of upgrading the specs of but not the prices. It's a tried and true business model for Apple and there is no cause for deviation now.

The new upgrades will help keep Apple products at a more competitive price point. As the economic downturn continues consumers will be spending less and retailers need to keep the offers attractive so that consumers feel that they are getting a good value.

What was the previous hardware? And what the hell is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 130. Thanks.

It's basically a re-badged 9600GT, though what I'm trying to figure out here, is that the card from the desktop version, or the mobile one? If it is the mobile version, I will be very disappointed.

All in all, very disappointing, especially the Mac Mini as at the very least they could give it a new look instead of sticking to a design that has lasted for almost 3 years! I have no problems with the iMac design but give some love to the Mac Mini for goodness sake, Apple!

Oh and for the record, the GT 120 is a re-badged 9500GS, which is a re-badged of the 8600GT . Whoever made those decisions at Nvidia should start bashing their heads on the walls for their pathetic and absolute stupidity in giving out version numbers.

Check amazon.com and they still have the older models/specs listed.

The iMacs use MXM cards where the first M stands for Mobility, so I presume it's the mobile version.

Your US prices are good, man. Our Canadian prices are atrocious and I don't have enough words in my mind to express how expensive it is in Europe.

There were 4 models, there are now four models, the prices of each model stayed the same...each one got performance increases.

lol, sarcasm is at least more funny to read than complaints, thanks

Anyway, yeah as a Mac user I'm also not happy with the pricing, and can only hope my laptop won't break down too soon after the warranty runs out. Because I can actually see myself using it for a longer time than usual thanks to the good hardware being involved here. (and also because I find myself having to upgrade due to software needs more and more rarely, including Windows boxes) But still -- it's damn pricey good hardware, unfortunately.

To prove I'm not an Apple fanboy..

I'm disgusted at the pricing. Like.. so disgusted. I thought I was in with a shot at a decent incremental upgrade of my iMac and to get anywhere near where I hoped to be, I'll have to spend an additional £800 on top of what I'd sell my iMac for. Screw Apple. I'm so disappointed right now.
#4.1 Kudos on 03 Mar 2009 - 14:22
It's an adjustment for the value of Sterling against the Euro. Apple Europe is based in Ireland and so their costs are in Euros. The way it had been for the last few months, prices for Apple gear in the UK were about 15% cheaper than in the Eurozone.

But as some people said on MacRumors (and I agree with this) the prices didn't balance the other way when the dollar was weaker against Sterling - Apple didn't DROP their prices in the UK.

Regardless of what the reasons are for the price adjustments, I just think they've spectacularly dropped the ball. I just don't think they represent anything remotely approaching value for money any more.

So, so disappointed.
#4.3 Kudos on 03 Mar 2009 - 14:32
They simply had to adjust it, I know plenty of people who were importing from the UK rather than buying in the Eurozone. As a result this was hitting Apple's pockets more than just in the UK. You won't get an argument from me that their markup is already high enough, but Sterling was effectively a price drop of 15% across Europe through the UK.

Better to get a sale from anywhere than not. Correct me if I'm wrong, but, base model is up 25% in the UK? (£400 to £500)
Personally, I can't see them selling many at that price, with the white MacBook at £719...

They're required to give minimum of 7 working days by EU distance selling laws. That's providing they didn't buy it in a local store.

Entry level iMac on the discount scheme I can buy from was £687.70 and has gone up to £834.90.
#4.11 bmaher on 03 Mar 2009 - 17:39
I really don't see how they can justify a £100 price bump for the mini - I mean, come on - £500 for a computer with 1GB of ram (all be it 1GB of DDR3)? £400 was steep for what it was, £500 is just ridiculous.
#4.12 CalumJR on 04 Mar 2009 - 04:39
Can't you only return within a certain amount of days if you haven't opened the box? That's what it's like at M&S, where I work. We won't accept any technology product back if it's been opened, even if a user bought it the day before a new version came out :/
#4.13 excalpius on 04 Mar 2009 - 22:31
CalumJr, that's a pretty crappy return policy that store has. How is anyone supposed to know the product they bought is the wrong one, doesn't work correctly or as expected, isn't compatible with what they've got already, etc. etc. if they don't open the box, install it and try it first? No major chain in the US works that way...they'd be out of business in a heart beat. Where is M&S located?

They're as high as their prices... The mini is worth about $250. I'll spend the $120 for a new copy of Windows 7 instead. What are they (not) thinking?
#5.1 +Ricardo Gil on 03 Mar 2009 - 17:20
250? Really? Find me a similar spec'd machine with the same form factor for $250. Oh, and don't forget the keyboard + OSX DVD.
#5.2 GreyWolfSC on 03 Mar 2009 - 18:35
Intel 2.4GHz - $72
Intel MicroATX board - $75
1GB compatible memory - $11
160GB HD - $42
Total: $200
All prices from newegg.com

Mini does not come w/keyboard/mouse/monitor. Throw in a copy of OSX for an addition $109 if you have to have it. I'm sure the "OEM" copy doesn't cost Apple retail to include.

The case and form factor is not worth $400+ more.

Nice! GreyWolf just put the smack down! ;-)

Forgot the slimline DVD burner. Does it come with firewire? Wireless? Bluetooth?
Don't forget the stylish case (You noted this in your post)

$250 now? No I didn't think so either.

But 400ish would be FAR more reasonable.
#5.6 GreyWolfSC on 04 Mar 2009 - 00:32
No, but the board (DG33TL) has 12 USB ports, so just plug in a $15 Bluetooth dongle. It has 2 firewire ports, 6 SATA, and IR. Slim combo drive is $34 for ATAPI or SATA, your choice. A nice little black micro tower case is $44.

(Adding OSX as an OS is $109; Vista Home Premium is $99.)

That makes it $293 for the computer price. Subtract the $599 for the lower model Mini and Apple is charging $306 for OSX and a case.

(Note I could not find a 2.0GHz C2D at newegg so I equipped my "mini" with a 2.4GHz one, which Apple doesn't do. They charge you an extra $200 for another $11 stick of RAM and a $59 hard drive.
#5.7 +Ricardo Gil on 04 Mar 2009 - 13:08
I still don't see it. You just mentioned a few parts... and no case? Does the motherboard come with a 9400? Who's gonna assemble all that? What's the size of the case so far? No wireless N? No DDR3? No internal BT? No DisplayPort? Sorry, doesn't even come close... Even if assembling it myself was an option.

Some other changes:

- English wired keyboard no longer has a numpad - you'll need the International English one if you want that
- iMacs no longer come bundled with Apple Remotes, they're an extra as they are with the Macbooks
- ITS ALL REALLY EXPENSIVE NOW
#6.1 MightyJordan on 03 Mar 2009 - 15:32
what said,
ITS ALL REALLY EXPENSIVE NOW

It's been expensive for years! The very least they could do is charge Europeans the same price as in America. They wonder why not many people buy Macs in the UK, it's because an iMac starts from £800!
#6.2 PsykX on 03 Mar 2009 - 16:19
You can get the keyboard with the numeric pad for 0.00$. What are you complaining at?
#7 limok on 03 Mar 2009 - 14:25
They need to outwit the credit crunch somehow, increase the prices of their hardware knowing a select few (the same few who would buy apple trolleys) will still buy them.
#8 +techbeck on 03 Mar 2009 - 14:39
They should of dropped their prices. With all the good reviews and press Windows 7 is getting, Apple may have shot themselves in the foot here.

There were apparently other changes to the store as well:
The AirPort Extreme Base Station also gets updated priced at $179 now feature simultaneous 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz dual-band networking for optimal performance, range and compatibility. An innovative Guest Network feature allows setting up a secondary network for friends and visitors with Internet-only access so you dont have to hand out your WiFi password.

Time Capsule 1TB combines an 802.11n router and server-grade hard disk for automatic wireless back-up with Time Machine, and is immediately available in two models: a 500GB model for $299 and a 1TB model for $499.

I am not trying to Apple bash here...but them not lowering their prices in these economic times proves that they are only interested in $$$. PC prices are staying the same (still much cheaper for the same specs) and I have even seen better deals now that the economy blows.

Think Apple needs to rethink this or consumers will just buy win7 when it comes out and load it on their PCs. Whats good about Win7 is that it will run on older hardware just fine when Vista would not. So people are going to look at the $150 or so price tag for Win7 and choose that over a Mac.

World+dog is going to end up with Windows 7 whether or not it's any good. If the positive press holds true at launch the take-up might be more rapid, but I don't think any realistic Apple investor expects to see a significant (

Anyway, yeah the Apple tax is freaking high. Even I who love to defend Apple, don't know what yo say really. My main problem is with Mac Minis and the 8GB config of the iMac...

Wow, you can get the specs in a Mac Mini (BYO display and inputs) in a PC laptop (display and inputs provided) for less money. That's absolutely pitiful.

Apple has kept to its standard of upgrading the specs of but not the prices. It's a tried and true business model for Apple and there is no cause for deviation now
Ha ha ha ha, you're kidding, right? Apple didn't "invent" this business model. For a long, long time, you could get a higher-end computer, with everything, for about $3,000. Over time the price stayed pretty much the same as the specs came up. Several years ago, this price started to decline a little faster than the specs improved and now you can get a decent, higher-end PC for $1500.

Apple, of course, resisted this trend. You pay at least $3,000 for their higher end model.

The commends already made about Apple's prices speak for themselves. Their customers justify it by comparing themselves to elite owners of high-end vehicles. Now that's what I call reality distortion field.

At least high-end vehicles truely are high-end. What makes Apple sad is the fact that they are trying to pass off low-end w/ high-end and the sheep eat it all up.

I am. IMO this is the most important machine for Apple since 2-3 years. Why? Simply because it's the machine who will make them get all the switchers.

iMacs are insane machines, but at a price. The advantage of the Mac Mini remains, but it's losing nearly all of it with such a poor upgrade. For the basic config, I was thinking more along the lines of :
2.33 GHz C2D
2GB of DDR3
#19.2 m.keeley on 03 Mar 2009 - 19:20
The base mini should have been priced at $499 and the "high end" one should have been about $100 extra as the only difference is a gig of RAM and a bigger hard drive.

Exactly! Its what made me switch. I would love to get a higher end mac but simply cant afford it, maybe some day. I would of considered selling my current mini for the upgraded one and pay the difference. But seeing the upgrade they gave it now, I can do just about do all the upgrades to my current mini for cheaper

Apple has once again failed to fill in that Gaping Hole in their desktop lineup (between the iMac and the Mac Pro). What makes it all the more galling is that a Q9xxx-based mid-tower-style Mac (Performa II, anyone?) could be built VERY easily using (except for the processor) parts ALREADY in Apple's bins!

Clueless, Mister Jobs (still).
#23.1 m.keeley on 03 Mar 2009 - 19:26
In a way they did fill in that hole with the single CPU Mac Pro. Unfortunately it doesn't help price wise.

Pricing aside, I was taking a closer look at the new Mac Pro with dual quad-core Nehalem Xeons. When are these CPUs (and MBs) going to be available through retail channels? Is any other OEM besides Apple shipping the new server chips?
#24.1 excalpius on 03 Mar 2009 - 22:55
Yes, as per all other Intel chip releases ALL of the major vendors will have their units at the same time. Remember that Apple just uses rebranded stock PC motherboards in their computers. The last iteration of the Mac Pro uses Tyan server motherboards, for example. Moreover, Intel will also be shipping Nehalem Xeons with 8 cores each. Just search Google and you'll see Supermicro, etc. all with Nehalem ready motherboards on the market now and/or imminently.

#25.1 CalumJR on 04 Mar 2009 - 04:50
Is there much use for a number pad at the side when there are numbers at the top?

I'm just wondering as I have never used those number pads at the side, I always use the ones at the top, yet I know some people who always use the ones at the side but never the ones at the top.

These are the questions I am asking myself right now:

Does anyone use both?
Is there need for both?
Which one would be better to keep - numbers at the top or numbers at the side?
#25.2 excalpius on 05 Mar 2009 - 01:23
I have never used a number pad either. It's my understanding that only data entry people in business offices use them. Anyone else know of another group that uses these?

For that price I'd want intercourse with Steve.

$2599 (up from $1899) for the baseline iMac, which has a nVidia 9400? I can by an i7 (with 4GB RAM and 1TB hard-drive) machine here for less than that (and I know this because we brought one last week at work).

And now the number pad is missing on your wired keyboard?

Thanks for the update Apple, and now I've seen what you've got to offer, it's safe to say you won't be getting any of my money.

Just looked at Dell UK and for the price of the "high end" Mini, £649, you can get a i7 920/2GB/500GB/ATI HD 3450 never mind for the price of an iMac.

I have to admit that Apple does have some reliable systems but fak in heaven, the prices are just flipping ridiculous.

I was going to get a Mac Mini, but no way on earth I'm paying $A1049 for it. I'll be sticking with a Windows 7 PC, which will be faster for less money. I'm very disappointed.

Glad they did updates but where is the Quad-core chips in the Imacs? And man the Mini should have 5.1 audio, I love my current Mini hooked up to the LCD tv and if it had good surround sound I would jump onto a new one in a minute. Big ass TV, Mini with ram boosted, Logitech 5500's connected via fiber cable. Toss in Boxee and you have the best and smallest media center out there.

I certainly won't be buying an iMac this year.

The iMac updates are a joke. Especially for Canadians!

$200 price increase for speed bumps and larger HD's, and slightly better graphics.

My Core Duo (2006) is still kicking, and will be even better with Snow Leopard.

The new Macbook Pro seems like a good deal now, since the prices stayed the same. Might get one of them + a cinema display which pretty much = an iMac, but portable
