First look at Facebook's new layout

One of the world's most popular social-networking web sites is changing its layout around to help improve functionality of the web site and bring better updates to each user.

One of the changes is the Filters on the web site to help organize into categories that friends are tagged under including, All Friends, Family, Facebook and some other personalized tags. Sort friends by what school, where you work, or anything you can think of. Customized tags are available to each user for quick updates.

The stream is also changing to improve who shows up on your stream to help organized and reduce the amount of traffic it may receive for people with lots of friends. Show more or less of a friend, family member, or anyone else.

The publisher can update your status, photos, videos and more. The publisher is just like your original status that will help keep you and your friends up to date with the quick share box. The publisher will help users find and upload pictures and videos to share with your friends and family.

There is also a highlights addition to the right pane on the profile that are stories based on what your friends interacted with. Filled with updates such as birthdays, upcoming events, and sponsors, the updated highlights should improve readability of events.

I HATE the new Facebook layout.. It looks so twitter-like. I'd always prefered Facebook totally separated from my Twitter, the previous layout made in 2008 was the best.. I loved it soo much? Also, the new curved-photos are ugly.

Who agree with me?

Remember back in the old days... like 1996-1999 when websites changed their designs weekly (almsot). I remember Microsoft went through 3 or 4 designs in a year.

Experimentation is the best way to learn and keep things fresh.

Thats because the internet was sill "new" (to the public, at least) and they want to try out new stuff.

Face Book's design is still blah. While it may be web 2.0, its design screms web 1.5 in my opinion

I can't see any adverts on that screenshot :S

The first 'big' image is actually a highlight stating that a friend has uploaded or added to a new photo album called "Go big or Go home" and the second one is listing a page which some of your friends are a fan of (this could be classed as an advert but it isn't really).

I just don't understand the complainers. It's called progress. Would you want to be using a design from 1995, 2000?? Would you still want to drive a 1980 car???

Things get updated/refreshed. It happens all the time.

Granted they just had another design overhaul a few months ago, but still... I'd rather have them keep it fresh than let it get stale.

I think somewhere on the blog it says by March 11th. Either that or that may be when it starts.

Ahh ok cool thanks!

To improve on it so much more. The new news feed features are fantastic and I am so glad the default news feed (and all the rest) are going to all be updated live now

Welcome to life bro. In life you'll experience changes you may or may not like. Its your job to give feedback and explain what you like and don't like.

Looks good but one can only wonder that had they listened to people's criticisms last time around they may have avoided updating the UI again in so quickly. I mean there will always be lashback...but if they themselves already feel they need to redesign it then surely they could have held back from releasing the old update.

Maybe they didn't see this update coming when they released the last one. I, for sure, thought, and do still think, the last update made the homepage much cleaner and much more efficient.

This update just nicely tweaks that a little bit.

well they may not have seen it coming but it makes me feel as if they didn't think the last one through fully if they need to change things already.

Maybe.

When I think about it I think that was more of a temporary one which they put on place so they could change all the profile layouts and they've been coding this new (final) homepage to replace it for ages, making sure they get it right.

The reason I think that is because this new homepage brings a lot of changes to the news feed, changes which would have taken a while to develop. Also, all the feeds are now live. So if any of your friends, in whichever filter you have set, do something new, post something, etc, it will come up straight away in your homepage stream.

This was similar to the "Live Feed" tab of the current news feed which I now think was just a placeholder while they got this homepage fully bug-free and looking perfect.

Yeah well a new design was needed to kill off the applications issue that the old layout had where it dominated the entire site and in many cases focus for users. I get 1/10th of the app invites now.

Maybe they did plan the other as an interim release...can't say.

I imagine they could just possibly be making use of 'Friend Lists' there. So you wouldn't have 'Friends' and 'Family' by default, you would have to create those lists.

I guess this is their response to all that backslash "new facebook" had.

Bottom line, if facebook had kept its old design it would've gone the myspace way... and that's not a good thing

lol @ them calling their glorified twitter "the publisher". they could've come up with a more interesting name. by the way is that an "@" reply just below the publisher form? that "Blake ross > Tom whitnah" thing. That's definitely twiterrish!!

"the publisher" actually has a lot of functionality, including expandable functionality from any Apps. I'm guessing that's a un-improved/simple view version of it. Apps can do loads of things (including pushing out to Twitter if you're so inclined to write it) with them... hell, theoretically, they could push a included PDF to a vanity press and literally publish it :-P Or recruit you a Publicist based on the previous statements you've made there :-P

I have no problems with the new layout but I really wish that they would make a layout chooser to choose which of the now three layouts one prefers. It would make the users very happy and wouldn't hurt them at all.

If you wanted to view others' profiles using the old layout, the users might be unhappy about it. I have edited my Facebook to look nice with the new profile layout - I know that if Facebook let users view my profile using the old profile layouts, I would be more than unhappy.

Also, with being allowed to change the layout of the homepage, they'd have to support much more, so it could hurt them.

not sure if it's wise to mix "highlights" and adverts together that's pretty poor judgment on their behalf and exploiting users. almost border line scammer/spammer tactics... if they don't put ads there i'm not too sure where else they could put them :S

I can't see any adverts for external products there :S

All I see is an advert for a page (clearly labelled "Sponsored page") and it tells you how many friends of yours have joined that page - to me, that's a highlight as well as it tells you how many friends have joined it.

Could it be true?

Does Facebook actually listen to the millions of users who are disgusted with the sewage system known as "New Facebook"?

Looks promising. I may have to keep my account after all. Time will tell.

Haha, I agree, rm20010. The 'old' Facebook was awful. Since they introduced the new layout last year, it has been so much easier to navigate through friends' pages and find things.

uh...+_x_ was commenting on the fact that the new homepage still uses blue. Not that he still had the old blue one.

I like the blue.

The blue is like the old blue Myspace had before they change the header. Its alright, but I prefer a darker, more glossier blue. Of course, may be throw in a few color options. (not 18 like myspace has, but 3-5 colors and/or themes)

I'm one for gui changes- keeps things fresh- but gigapixels is right. Most of the world doesn't like change, and it just so happens most of the world is on facebook haha.

Well maybe it serves "most of the world" for not embracing change then. I always love change if it's an improvement and I'm always open-minded about change and look for the benefits, unlike "most of the world".

Well, "most of the world" needs to move on. I hate it when people complain about changes. I take those who hate change wanted Mcain to win. As he would have taken over the bush policy.. and we will be screwed

or groups on how to get back the old layout/colorize your profile but not telling you until after you join up that you have to install Firefox along with a script and then after all that work, only you can see it

Uh, they just had a major layout change. This looks nice, but still, it's bad web design practice to change your layout so quickly after a previous major change... Let's hope this one doesn't receive the backlash the last one did.

I'm sure it will receive such a lash...from neowinians, at least.

Actually, many sites change their designs frequently. It doesn't look major. Pretty minor.

Not major?! Where did my inbox go? They moved the right-sidebar to the left and eliminated the tabs that just a few months ago they lauded. I'm sick of their re-designs.

It's just the homepage...not the profiles. The homepage redesign isn't that major...not like the tectonic redesign they had a few months back.

And they probably omitted the blue bar on top because it's not being changed. They have no reason to remove that.
