The Windows Live team wants your wish lists

It is not ordinary for Microsoft to request feedback in the following fashion, but kudos to the Windows Live team for asking online communities to send their feedback directly to their e-mail inbox. Kent Compton, a Product Planner for Windows Live, is seeking everyone's feedback. Before we get into the announcement, we have a few things to point out to our readers.

Your suggestions are going to be listened to, however don't get your hopes up by suggesting a plethora of features and expect them to deliver in the next version of Windows Live. We can tell you that Windows Live Wave 4 is already in development. With that in mind take into consideration that the Windows Live team already has their product map in place, and are working on development as we speak.

In the announcement Compton explained, "Most people feel it is too hard to give someone at Microsoft their feedback. I know I felt that too when I was a non-Microsoft employee (and I still feel that way as a consumer of other company's goods and services). I believe this has changed for the better in recent years with the proliferation of blogs (which allow comments), Help | Send Feedback (for Windows Live products), etc."

With that in mind, think of your favorite feature that you would absolutely love to see in your favorite Windows Live application or service. Whether it be tabbed chatting in messenger, or a simple AutoCorrect feature in Hotmail, think of how it would impact customers that use the product. Then think if your average Joe would know how to use the feature easily.

Once you've sat down and thought about it, send it directly to the Windows Live team. In an effort to control the spam being sent, Compton has provided us with the following image with the e-mail address listed:

Let us know what you'd like to see too, in essence a team effort can be made to push these features they are something we've all wanted!

Cool. I feel bad for the guys responsible for reading the thousands of emails though
#1.1 +dead.cell on 04 Mar 2009 - 18:36
Maybe they'll hire Google's million-man army of email readers to do the job. I mean, C_Guy tells me that they're wonderful at reading your Gmail and pasting advertisements based on things said in your email.

I think he has a detective working at Google so I trust him. Detective S. Ballmer or something like that...

Nice move, Microsoft are really striving for change lately. Maybe this is the new image of Microsoft?

I really hope so!

I'd like to have Jump Lists support for Windows Live Mail, which I'm sure is at least planned (if not in development already).

And I would like to be able to type a contact's name (or nickname, or email) into the start menu search box, and have the contact turn up in the results, and then press enter to open a chat window if I'm signed into messenger or an email window if I'm not.

Those are the ones I've been thinking about since the 7 Beta came out. I might come up with other stuff seeing they're actively asking for feedback.

That's a brilliant idea! I hope you have sent an email with that feedback in, letting them know?

It would make more sense for a contact window to come up on Enter, from which you can do what you want. A chat window does not make sense as default .. if you already have Messenger running that is the logical place to start a chat -- you can see if the contact is online, busy etc. Most of the time I bring a contact up because I want to look at a phone number.

That would be cool. I like the tabbed chat feature in Digsby, but I normally separate it out into multiple windows . Options are good.

@Shadrack -

Agreed. Many people want this and many people don't, so an option would be very much appreciated and would even increase the market share of Windows Live Messenger, I reckon.

I would like this feature.

RSS reader!
#6.1 CalumJR on 04 Mar 2009 - 13:28
There's already an RSS reader in Windows Live Mail It really is fantastic and I use it for my RSS feeds.

You can download this at http://download.live.com. It is part of Windows Live Essentials.
#6.2 Quikboy on 05 Mar 2009 - 00:34
If you mean a web-based RSS Reader, then I concur!
#6.3 McDave on 05 Mar 2009 - 02:43
If your RSS feeds in Win Live Mail synced over onto the web so when you use a browser on another computer can easily see what news you have read.

#8 +emmi on 04 Mar 2009 - 13:26
tabs, tabs, TABS in messenger!
#9 CalumJR on 04 Mar 2009 - 13:30
A tabbed Messenger really would be very useful. I hate the way tabs are implemented and how they look in Messenger Plus! Live. Also, the rest of the Windows Live applications should have a fully consistent interface and should work consistently with the taskbar in Windows 7 (at least Messenger and Mail). I haven't tried Windows 7 so I don't know which is better - the new way Messenger is implemented into the taskbar, or the previous way.

I'll definately have to send feedback on these issues, if possible. Thank you for the heads up, Sean

I just sent them my e-mail. The feature I want most is better management of group conversations. It's so annoying that you're automatically added to a group convo without being asked first.
#15 +Ames on 04 Mar 2009 - 16:04
Messenger contact list "view by email" back from the old builds.... miss this terribly in the new version

I wish that Windows Live Mail would conform to the default UI of the system. It does when it is maximized but not when it is restored. Looks great in Vista/7 but in XP it just doesn't fit in. I also wish Windows Live Mail was a little snappier when it came to IMAP (or at least performed some operations in the background instead of locking up the whole UI). For instance, if I right click an IMAP folder and select "Mark all as read" it takes an ungodly amount of time with no response from the UI even if there are only 1 or 2 messages that are still marked unread.
#16.1 CalumJR on 04 Mar 2009 - 17:16
I haven't had any problems with the speed of Windows Live Mail, but then I don't currently use IMAP.

Is it only with IMAP you have having these problems, or all the time?

I know it is an IMAP only issue.

Tabs as mentioned, Conversation Encryption as standard and a Spellcheck would be nice. Stop people thinking I am drunk when IM'ing! Or am I the only one who writes full english when Instant Messaging?
#17.1 Krome on 04 Mar 2009 - 18:32
Then there will not be any more "LOL"
#17.2 lee26 on 05 Mar 2009 - 00:30

#19 Omen1393 on 05 Mar 2009 - 00:12
I got a reply from them in exactly one hour

"Alex,

Thank you for your feedback. Movie Maker is one of the few remaining Windows Live Essential products still in beta. Hopefully, you'll like the released product and let me assure you that we'll keep working on it to make it even better in the next release.

Sincerely,

Kent

will be interesting to see what they do with the responses. Things like group video chat or file sending in group convos for instance have been requested for years. Hopefully they take some of these on board.
