Circuit City will close March 8th

Advertisement (Why?)
Circuit City will close all of its remaining stores on March 8th. This will mark the end of a consumer era as a major electronics chain will vanish from the retail space. Regardless of the reasoning for the closing, many have lost their jobs and consumers now have fewer shopping options for new electronic gear.

It may be worth your time to stop by any of the remaining stores as anything left will surely be priced to move. Be warned that all sales are final and make sure to inspect all of your purchases before you pay for them as once you leave your stuck with it.

Circuit City has been in business for 60 years and employed thousands of people over that time span. It's a tough time to be looking for a job and we all wish every Circuit City employee the best of luck!

Here in Brooklyn, Best Buy is snatching up most of the CC locations. Hopefully, that creates some opportunities for people who lost their jobs.

Anything will be good for them. As long as its a job and it supports them.

I wonder if this will affect "The Source By Circuit City" here in Canada. They bought out Radio Shack so hopefully they stay in business.

I've heard that Bell is going to be buying some of the Circuit City Stores in Canada.
#2.2 lunarworks on 06 Mar 2009 - 15:32
Bell is buying all of The Source stores, and will be running them pretty much exactly as they are now. The only difference is that in January they will be kicking all the Rogers (phone, tv, internet) stuff out and putting their own (phone, tv, internet) stuff in. (The Source and Rogers apparently have an exclusive sales contract until then.)

my local CC had lots of cables still for sale... I picked up 2 8 ft hdmi cables @ $5 a piece... so there are a fews gems to be found... just gotta get lucky..

Doesn't sound that great of a deal.

For a non-internet order, it's actually a great deal. + instant gratification and not having to wait 3-5 days.

you think there is a better deal?... see my post below.. amazon has a 6ft cable for 1.38, + 2.99 shipping...i paid 5.30 as opposed to 4.37.. overall though for the morons who pay $30-$100 for an hdmi cable.. $5 is a good deal
#3.4 IamZed on 06 Mar 2009 - 21:48
I got a Harmony One for $150, and a MediaSmart cage w/power supply for free. I asked to be called when the liquidators released permission to make deals.

i hate to say it but good riddance. CC was always the 2nd rate Best Buy. When confronted with BB they just continued with their lame business model.

and for jerdawg: HDMI cables are the biggest scam ever!! go on amazon - you get 10 ft noname brand HDMI cable for $1 and they work just fine.
#4.1 xploit1030 on 06 Mar 2009 - 15:47
While I didn't like CC, I liked the fact that it existed to help keep BB inline. Lack of retail competition (as far as brick and motar electronic super-stores) will not lead to many positive changes for customers.
#4.2 the420kid on 06 Mar 2009 - 15:50
mmmm this culture of monopoly's sucking up all the little guys contribs to our economic problem. no competition = no innovation
#4.3 Shane Pitman on 06 Mar 2009 - 15:52
Lack of competition, especially in the consumer retail market, is never a good thing. You may not have liked Circuit City, but you be certain that their existence influenced the pricing of competing merchants.

Walmart sells everything now..who's going to stop that beast?

I know there is a 6 ft hdmi cable on amazon for $1.38+$2.99 for shipping but I needed one at the moment so i paid a $1 premium then having to wait... ill take the hit...

Walmart is fine. Best buy is great for electronics. I dont understand why people think they suck just because the store in their own has poor managment
#4.7 Titoist on 06 Mar 2009 - 16:37
Here in Canada, a HDMI cable is $39.99 minimum for a decent size.

Yes, BB does this HDMI scam as well. They even do that crap with tv calibration. They will say one tv is calibrated while its really using HDMI and the uncalibrated one is on Component Video cables. I too found out about the scam and bought my cables online for cheap. Like $5 and shipping. I found a tv calibration dvd on netflix so I am getting that for free. All I had to do is buy the color filters for it.

Management makes all the difference. Personally I no longer shop at the local walmart. No matter what time a day the lines are always extremely long. I have complained to the management their on several occassions. The lines always like the day after thanksgiving sale lines but its everyday all day long. They simply refuse to open more lanes. So I stopped going there. I will gladly pay more stuff else where if it means I dont have to spend 2 hours in line.

best buy is pure s*** they rip you off and they don't know what they are talking about. i miss compusa! the cc by me was down to nothing but fixtures.
#4.11 the420kid on 06 Mar 2009 - 18:34
funny you bring up "tv calibration" some coworker was telling me he was having it done (luckily with some free coupon ) otherwise its quite pricey. If calibration they mean adjust brightness, blacks, etc then its a f*&king rip.

more scam crap from BB. I really dont shop at any of these stores to be to honest. I buy my groceries at the market and ride my mountain bike - screw wasting money on crap electronics hehe. That and there is always a better deal on the web. (except for my canadian friends)

dude that's like every Wal-mart in the country lol. You get ZERO customer service at Wal-mart and when you're ready to check out I hope you brought a lunch. If having only 2 lanes open is bad enough, they put the slowest cashiers in the world on the lanes who call for the CSM every 3 items scanned. Of course the CSM is nowhere to be seen and eventually somebody else comes. This is a true story but all the 17+ years I have shopped at Wal-mart, i have never seen a member of management once in any of their stores, ever.

Dunno, but WallyWorld - aka WalMart has a Phillips 6ft HDMI here in Canada for $19.99

One of the reasons I like having 2 versions of Best Buy in Canada - Best Buy Canada and Future Shop. Future Shop is owned by Best Buy and (for the most part) has some knowledgable staff and they will price match each other...

Never heard of it, was it a big company??
#5.1 Kevin. on 06 Mar 2009 - 15:49
In the US and Canada yes. Unfortunately, the higher had to be stupid and replace the older, more experienced employees with younger, less experienced ones because they wanted to be cheap.
#5.2 Chris-Gonzales on 06 Mar 2009 - 16:03
Thus, why they went bankrupt and had to shut down.
#5.3 PsykX on 06 Mar 2009 - 16:36
In US and Canada yes? Sorry, but not in Canada, or at least not in Montreal, well not that I know of.
I saw a screenshot of one of the Circuit City in the US this week and was like "WOW I never knew these stores were so big!"

Here in Montreal, there's a couple of stores which sells couple of wires, 3-4 TVs, couple of alarm clocks, all kinds of batteries, ... and globally they sell cheap products. But it's good because when I can't find a thing in huge stores, I go there and they have all I want

When I saw the screenshots, they looked comparable to Best Buy and Future Shop, so it was nothing short of a small store like here.

Um it was/is called "The Source, by Circuit City"; a loose derivative of the Circuit Cities in the US; although the are for the most part converted Radio Shacks.
#5.5 excalpius on 06 Mar 2009 - 22:47
I've lived in Montreal for a while. It's like the stone ages technology/price wise. If someone opened a Fry's Electronics in Montreal, a thousand crappy overpriced hole in the wall computer retailers would go out of business in a month.
#5.6 Chris-Gonzales on 06 Mar 2009 - 23:22
Fry's is not that good. Mostly filled with used items

You're right, it's The Source by Circuit City. I mixed them up, but it's from the same owner.

My CC has lots of stuff left too, 70% off deals. Even with 70% off I can still get it cheaper on eBay or Amazon. I did a compare, thinking I would just buy the a lot of Linksys cards they had left and eBay them over time for a small profit. Negative.

your lucky theyre given a 70% discount where you live and where i live they are giving only 10% off wheres the saving in that!!!
#7 Chris-Gonzales on 06 Mar 2009 - 16:06
My CC had barly nothing left when I went 2 weeks ago. The Computer department was bare, only a few laptops and accessories left. in fact they were taking down the shelving and store displays for the "computers" when I went there and was moving anything remaining in the deparment, elsewhere, so they can see if anyone will shop lift, due to the deparment being in the back of the store.

Neowin members are a VERY credible source, I know

Wow... I've always wanted to see a Circuit City in my home town, but it looks like I never will. I always liked their floor layout more than Best Buy. Always felt more open and larger.
#9.1 Chris-Gonzales on 06 Mar 2009 - 23:17
The best buy in my town has plenty of room. Just because one best buy is small, oesnt mean all of them are small

There is a Circuit City across the street from the Best Buy that I work for; needless to say, we are enjoying increased business.
#12 afusion on 06 Mar 2009 - 17:30
This makes me a sad panda

My family has bought everything from TVs, Camcorders, Home Theater Setups, and even vacuums throughout my lifetime from circuit city.

It's just a sad sight to see.

Oh well. I always liked Circuit City, even before I started working for them (I quit last year, so I'm not losing my job because of this). Compared to the Best Buy near me, they always seemed to put an emphasis on customer service. I may not have needed much help, but it was nice to know it was there. With Best Buy, everybody seemed to not care that I was even there and seemed less interested in helping me if I needed it.

I know that doesn't go for every Best Buy and Circuit City, but it definitely was like that for the few that I have visited.
#13.1 sibot on 06 Mar 2009 - 18:38
Best Buy customer service was the worst ever! The guy actually asked me to reconsider my purchase just because it was a low end laptop! I mean dude! I want to buy this and its my choice, I don't need you pesky comments! Well anyway I didn't end up buying from that guy, so I guess no commission for him, i.e. if they do get commission. While at CC, the guys were so helpful, they even accepted my travelers cheques!

That's retail, get used to it. It's everywhere.
#13.3 Chris-Gonzales on 06 Mar 2009 - 23:19
The customer service at my best buy is really good.

also, best buy doesn't work on Commission. I know this because when you apply for best buy, it says "sales rep. (Non- conmission)

#13.4 cork1958 on 07 Mar 2009 - 03:01
Yeah,
Always preferred CC over BB. Always feel like no one wants to help you in BB and when they do, it's like they don't have a clue!
#14 atari800 on 06 Mar 2009 - 17:58
Circuit City has been in business for 60 years

So in 1949 they where called Circuit City? Or Vaccuum Tube City?
*Just a play on words - dont take is seriously

On the topic of Competition, Amazon and Newegg are HUGE. They get a ton of sales, probably more than Circuit City got this year.

I got a 10in digital frame from Circuit City for $60 during their markdowns. Loving it.

Some of that stuff will likely end up at salvage stores like Hudson's (don't know if they have these stores outside of the southeast US edit: nope, those stores are only in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana).
#20.2 Dane on 07 Mar 2009 - 19:48
I am curious if they'll be like 90-95% off if they have them left over.

if the product is not sold, the product gets destroyed. i know this because i did it yesterday.(per the liquidator) RIP CC.
