It seems the legal battles and disputes between companies is going to again have the bloody aftermath trickle down to the consumers. The most recent event is regarding YouTube, and the Performing Right Society (PRS). The news comes from BBC News, and only affects those living in the UK.Starting later on Monday, thousands upon thousands of videos will be unavailable to UK customers, and apparently the PRS is outraged with the decision. Steve Porter, head of the society, said that he was also shocked and disappointed by YouTube's actions. "This action has been taken without any consultation with PRS for Music and in the middle of negotiations between the two parties," read a PRS statement. They also added, "Google has told us they are taking this step because they wish to pay significantly less than at present to the writers of the music on which their service relies, despite the massive increase in YouTube viewing."
Patrick Walker, YouTube's director of video management, called the move "regrettable". Apparently, though, the PRS demanded fees that were vastly higher than the previous agreement, and YouTube did not believe it was worth paying such high amounts.
YouTube and the PRS may come to an agreement in the end, but for now, UK users will have to do without music videos, as of 1800GMT, according to the BBC. YouTube is also unimpressed with the decision by the PRS to not inform others which artists will be covered by the proposed agreement; "That's like asking a consumer to buy a blank CD without knowing what musicians are on it." Hopefully this dispute will be worked out soon, as many of YouTube's users will be left unimpressed themselves.

The ones losing here and not consumers for recording companies than use music videos as vehicles to promote cd purchasing. If they wanna make an extra profit from the internet viewers, they should create their own youtube.
I applaud Google for blocking everything. Apple did the same thing to NBC when they demanded more money for their itunes content.
There's a new sheriff in town, and he is a nerd.

While it is true that YouTube is more than just music videos, it's now not just music videos being blocked. Half of the videos I try to watch on YouTube are now just showing the "Video Removed due to Copyright restrictions" notice (or whatever it says) because many of these home made videos use known songs as background.
Most of my friends (mostly non-nerds) also are finding YouTube increasingly frustrating because there are no videos left that they want to watch.
I can see where google are coming from but surely there must be a way to compensate.
Even if they'll block music videos on YouTube there are still hundreds of places where you can watch music videos. It's just a waste of time and money.
yes that strange with 3 min clip following 5 min of ads after it
How did you pick and choose between your videos to watch?

last time i was watching this kind of stuff was like 1995 (mtv) and viva2 in 1999. i feel actually a little sorry for the generation after us,,,just hopes that a third worldwar is comming and they dont have to suffer that long....
Nice to see you have your priorities right poohtube.
...
I see what you did there.
I think personally it is the PRS that is at fault here they seem to want their cake and eat it.
edit: there was a typo: its actually spelled jewgle
Another mature, professional response from Do No Evil, Incorporated.
And my youtube bookmark drop (deleted by Youtube) around 5-7 videos per month.
Spotify on the other hand....
(British)
thanks to the PRS's actions the music artists themselves will lose out and UK consumers will be worse off
Also, how many years have they been this popular, AND THEY STILL CAN'T CREATE A NON GLITCHY BLOODY VIDEO PLAYER.
i think if a site region blocks, it should say so for every user blocked or not... so every user knows what they are supporting

Its great in the US. the visual is very clean and nice. Plus, you dont get all the crap like kids fighting, a guy/girl crying over Britney, or other stuff that no one but the makers watch.

That said though, it is annoying, and you definitely have to be a loner to do it.

"This video is not available in your country."
As long as YouTube doesn't start blocking all the Puroresu on there then I'm fine.
I expect there are alot of labels that would much prefer to see their songs hosted.
80s? Uh, so they were started in the 80s? Big deal. The internet was invented way before the 80s... That doesn't mean its OLD, as you're trying to imply with music videos.

Looks like they don't understand what YouTube is at *all*. Do they think it's a music video service? It's like they know of it only in the context that relates to their company. The ignorance shown in this statement is hilarious!
