YouTube to block all premium music videos in the UK

Advertisement (Why?)
It seems the legal battles and disputes between companies is going to again have the bloody aftermath trickle down to the consumers. The most recent event is regarding YouTube, and the Performing Right Society (PRS). The news comes from BBC News, and only affects those living in the UK.

Starting later on Monday, thousands upon thousands of videos will be unavailable to UK customers, and apparently the PRS is outraged with the decision. Steve Porter, head of the society, said that he was also shocked and disappointed by YouTube's actions. "This action has been taken without any consultation with PRS for Music and in the middle of negotiations between the two parties," read a PRS statement. They also added, "Google has told us they are taking this step because they wish to pay significantly less than at present to the writers of the music on which their service relies, despite the massive increase in YouTube viewing."

Patrick Walker, YouTube's director of video management, called the move "regrettable". Apparently, though, the PRS demanded fees that were vastly higher than the previous agreement, and YouTube did not believe it was worth paying such high amounts.

YouTube and the PRS may come to an agreement in the end, but for now, UK users will have to do without music videos, as of 1800GMT, according to the BBC. YouTube is also unimpressed with the decision by the PRS to not inform others which artists will be covered by the proposed agreement; "That's like asking a consumer to buy a blank CD without knowing what musicians are on it." Hopefully this dispute will be worked out soon, as many of YouTube's users will be left unimpressed themselves.

So this is how the YouTube era ends? Through the pelt of pedantic lawsuits from those who couldn't adapt to the 21st century.

Looks like it. but if they are copyrighted then they need to remove them.

Youtube is 100x more than just music videos.

The ones losing here and not consumers for recording companies than use music videos as vehicles to promote cd purchasing. If they wanna make an extra profit from the internet viewers, they should create their own youtube.

I applaud Google for blocking everything. Apple did the same thing to NBC when they demanded more money for their itunes content.

There's a new sheriff in town, and he is a nerd.

While it is true that YouTube is more than just music videos, it's now not just music videos being blocked. Half of the videos I try to watch on YouTube are now just showing the "Video Removed due to Copyright restrictions" notice (or whatever it says) because many of these home made videos use known songs as background.

Most of my friends (mostly non-nerds) also are finding YouTube increasingly frustrating because there are no videos left that they want to watch.

Seen this on News @ six.

I can see where google are coming from but surely there must be a way to compensate.

I watched music videos the other day... on TV! I know, that may be a strange concept for some folks.
#3.1 +Chipshop on 09 Mar 2009 - 20:09
Even stranger would be if there was any music videos on tv that i wanted to watch, when i wanted to watch.
#3.2 Nexx295 on 09 Mar 2009 - 20:30
Music videos on TV are invaded by commercials these days. I've tried to watch VIVA and MTV Germany this week and had to switch the channel after a few minutes. After two or even one music video, they take commercial breaks which aren't shorter than 7 minutes.

Even if they'll block music videos on YouTube there are still hundreds of places where you can watch music videos. It's just a waste of time and money.

yes that strange with 3 min clip following 5 min of ads after it
#3.4 Chris-Gonzales on 10 Mar 2009 - 00:40
Its not strange, you just can't control what videos you watch. When you watch them on line you can search for who YOU want. No crzzy bumbers or graphics covering the videos or ads talking about spin the bottle

How did you pick and choose between your videos to watch?

last time i was watching this kind of stuff was like 1995 (mtv) and viva2 in 1999. i feel actually a little sorry for the generation after us,,,just hopes that a third worldwar is comming and they dont have to suffer that long....

So younoob will block copyright material but still allow the blirts from the uk to post videos of themselves attacking innocent people, shooting innocent people, showing off illegal weaponry.

Nice to see you have your priorities right poohtube.
#4.1 Majesticmerc on 09 Mar 2009 - 19:32
Younoob? Poohtube?

...

I see what you did there.

Yup, used a browser without spell check and too lazy to do it the old fashioned way!
(1 reply) #5 Sazz181 on 09 Mar 2009 - 19:36
Surely it will be the record companies and artists who will be hit the hardest by this? The PRS said it was "urgent", which makes me believe they will come crawling back later.
#5.1 Chris-Gonzales on 10 Mar 2009 - 00:40
We pay for the music, not the videos
(4 replies) #6 +stevember on 09 Mar 2009 - 19:41
Jeeezs people why is everybody so against google here it is about the PRS asking for too much money, if it is costing google more than what they make I can you blame them?

I think personally it is the PRS that is at fault here they seem to want their cake and eat it.
#6.1 +Chipshop on 09 Mar 2009 - 20:10
I work in a music venue and i happened across there bill from the PRS... i can't remember the exact figure but it was something ridiculous i can tell you.
#6.2 +TCLN Ryster on 10 Mar 2009 - 00:11
Indeed. WTF is up with people in this comments thread? PRS = RIAA of the UK. They were trying to demand more money from Google, Google said no and took all the music down. Seems like a good move for consumers in the long run if you ask me.
#6.3 qwertz123 on 11 Mar 2009 - 00:32
google said no to a merely loss of,,,lets asume 1 million, from what, 1 billion?

edit: there was a typo: its actually spelled jewgle
#6.4 C_Guy on 11 Mar 2009 - 15:04
Google said no and took all the music down

Im in finland and Im impressed about the VAST amount of music videos that show the "Unavailable in your country" message. Youtube is pretty much done for me in that aspect
#7.1 Magallanes on 09 Mar 2009 - 20:37
Me too, and not just musical videos, also several other kind of material.

And my youtube bookmark drop (deleted by Youtube) around 5-7 videos per month.

#7.2 The Stylish Hobo on 10 Mar 2009 - 07:57
I only sometimes get that on Youtube.

Spotify on the other hand....

#8 marleyuk on 09 Mar 2009 - 20:22
At least we can use Vimoe which IMO is a much better service. And there is Dailymotion.
#9 Richard Hammond on 09 Mar 2009 - 20:39
Dunno whos worse, Google/Youtube throwing the toys out of their pram or the PRS whining about how much money they arent going to get because Google/Youtube removed the videos without telling them which they are perfectly alright to do considering its their service.
#10 ian35772 on 09 Mar 2009 - 20:56
The PRS will back down in we bombard their office with protests. Email them at press@prsformusic.com or call on +44 (0)20 7306 4777 and tell them what you think of their outrageous increase in fees.

thanks to the PRS's actions the music artists themselves will lose out and UK consumers will be worse off

Youtube has been going downhill lately, from poor buffering, irrelevant search results and "unavailable in your country" crap.

Also, how many years have they been this popular, AND THEY STILL CAN'T CREATE A NON GLITCHY BLOODY VIDEO PLAYER.

yet people will still use YouTube, Hulu .. and all the other sites that region block, you know... if you told all your friends, just watch what is available to everyone, on a site that permits that, just watch... watch how fast everything becomes unrestricted, seems many haven't learned how DRM started and was killed off, for the most part

i think if a site region blocks, it should say so for every user blocked or not... so every user knows what they are supporting

Its great in the US. the visual is very clean and nice. Plus, you dont get all the crap like kids fighting, a guy/girl crying over Britney, or other stuff that no one but the makers watch.

You're kidding right, just look at the stats for the video...

That said though, it is annoying, and you definitely have to be a loner to do it.

#16 Destruction.Thrash on 10 Mar 2009 - 16:34
Music Videos being removed doesn't bother me much, the few I've watched on there are for "underground" bands but the whole muting/deleting fan made music videos is what annoys me. Guess people aren't into free advertisment these days.

As long as YouTube doesn't start blocking all the Puroresu on there then I'm fine.
#17 barteh on 10 Mar 2009 - 16:36
youtube is doing them a bloody favor with free publicity.
I expect there are alot of labels that would much prefer to see their songs hosted.

<rant>Music videos? Oh you mean those annoying songs-played-to-video things from the 80s that somehow made a whole TV channel devoted to them? Garbage.<rant>
#18.1 chris4 on 15 Mar 2009 - 01:21
Annoying? They make the song interesting...

80s? Uh, so they were started in the 80s? Big deal. The internet was invented way before the 80s... That doesn't mean its OLD, as you're trying to imply with music videos.

"the music on which their service relies"

Looks like they don't understand what YouTube is at *all*. Do they think it's a music video service? It's like they know of it only in the context that relates to their company. The ignorance shown in this statement is hilarious!
#21.1 chris4 on 15 Mar 2009 - 01:22
They're saying that music videos are popular on YouTube, which is true.
