iTunes gift card algorithm hacked, $200.00 card for $2.60

Advertisement (Why?)
It was bound to happen sooner or later but it appears that the iTunes gift card algorithm has been hacked by someone in China.

According to Outdustry an iTunes gift card with a face value of $200.00 can be bought for as low as $10.00 with reports that they are selling for as cheap as $2.60. Apple has not officially commented on the matter yet but it seems a change will have to be made to the current algorithm.

A scary thought may be that the algorithm being generated by the Chinese could be on an actual $200.00 card on store shelves right now, potentially leaving a legitimate consumer out of luck. If that would happen the consumer may face little chance of ever recovering their money. If this turns into a widespread problem it could spell disaster for iTunes reputation.

i honestly expected it to be sooner heck WoW has to change the algorithm they use every once in a while for this same reason.
#6 lylesback2 on 10 Mar 2009 - 19:15
so the card algorithm can only be generated if that number is active and unused?

Taobao is in Chinese, but you could find a taobao shopping agent. They will accept paypal and help you buy almost everything on taobao.com. Try http://c2cagent.com

Completely pointless, really. If you're gonna download music illegally then why not just do it the proper way?

well technically they would be downloading the music itself legally...just aquiring the funds illegally.

not all music on itunes can be found elsewhere....
#9.5 wad11656 on 12 Mar 2009 - 05:38
Um...yes. yes, it pretty much can. I'm sure you're right about not ALL, but try imeem.com. They've got a TON of music. It's an organization+user-powered database. And I'm pretty sure the imeem.com company makes every song available for download that all other online music stores do. Sites like rhapsody.com also have the same songs for sale as iTunes. I believe all online music selling sites have one large database of songs that they sell from.

I say the same thing to people who come home from china with their bags full of pirated dvds.
Why bother buying when you still don't support those who made the movie?
The quality of torrents is usually a lot better than the street-rips anyway.
#10 excalpius on 10 Mar 2009 - 20:37
Um, has anyone confirmed that the cards WORK?! Couldn't this just be a scam to get money via valid credit card info and the cards fail to validate with Apple, iTunes, etc?
#11 Murkey on 10 Mar 2009 - 20:57
Scrolling down the page it seems like quite a few people have already bought them.
#12 Rudy on 10 Mar 2009 - 21:24
at that price I would buy them.....hell I'd pay $10 each
#13 Binary on 10 Mar 2009 - 21:35
This is really bad news if the generated card ID's are real cards and people get screwed.

It'll be just like the generated XP serials that screwed some paying customers.

I'm sure all will be rectified if this is in fact the case.

They can prove when they bought the card with a receipt, and if the card # has been used prior, of course they will get a refund.

This is cool. Bravo for that hacker.I agree with previous reply that we should take our illegal content from torrents like the most people do in weak economic countries like mine.

#17.1 Calum on 11 Mar 2009 - 08:41
I do not agree at all. I think it is dishonest to do such things and downloading torrents is wrong, whether the economy is weak or not.

If you can't afford something, then it is wrong to get it via illegal means. Why not make do with what you can afford, the legal way?

Yes, and why bother paying for stuff in the shops, you should just steal it. Given that you have a weak economic country... Oh and why stop there? Seen a new car you want? Don't buy one, go steal it!

If i dont have money i would not buy a car, but when we are talking about virtual stuff on internet, beleive me i dont give a **** its all illegal.why should i buy with my own money when my job is 150 Euros in a month.
Think again what should i do ?!
Buying with my own money or share it via torrents.

After thinking again what you should do, I say, do nothing! If you can't afford it, then you can't have it, simple as that. It's unfair to steal from people which is why it is against the law.

Also, music is not a "virtual" thing as you call it. It is still a product, just like a car is.
#17.5 premium on 11 Mar 2009 - 14:26
Ok nevermind i dont steal from anyone , torrents are free as i know and if i like the product i will buy it on originial CD or DVD.
Anyway you are right.I have some things that i like but i have listened them first via torrents.
Do you get me now what i like to say?
For example: I have my album would you buy it or you will like to listen it first and then buy if you like it.
That's my point.
Thanks

Budget? Find another job? Live within your means? Lose the "entitlement" attitude?

Tell ya what. Go to a store and steal a chocolate bar. When you are arrested, tell the authorities that you don't make enough money to pay for it and I am sure they will let you go.

Does your employer expect you to work for free? No. So why should all the people who work to make music for you do it for free?

When I first read it my responce was LULZ but yeh it would suck to send quite a lot of money to purchase music legally only to get screwed.

Why I just stick to buying CDs and ripping them myself.
#21 Gabe3 on 11 Mar 2009 - 04:19
the itunes library algorithm got cracked too recently because you can download songs on your iphone/touch via P2P and import them right into your music library, no computer needed.

#24 NeoSigma on 11 Mar 2009 - 16:41
Bad news for Apple but I can see them fixing this quick, it will cost them a bit but way less then losing $200 per card. They'll probably just discontinue and block all current $200 cards. If you legally bought a genuine itunes card which will probably have some kind of a product code/id on them they'll most likely send you a prepaid envelope to mail it to them in and then exchange it for a new one with a new algorithm.
#25 M.F.D.K on 11 Mar 2009 - 17:32
What really surprises me is, that since i own a couple of apple products i usually read a lot into Mac forums but i never see any negative news there. MacRumors, Macnn etc. Eploits, hardware problems etc.
#26 jonnytabpni on 11 Mar 2009 - 17:50
what apple will probably have to do is use some sort of authorising server. So seriels can't be used unless a server says it can be. This would mean no more physical giftcards however they could use PayPoint etc.. in some shops.

For all you non-UKers, PayPoint is a yellow machine we have in the UK which we can top up our mobile phones, electricity etc...

Can iTunes cards be refunded for a cash back?
#28 Death Blade on 12 Mar 2009 - 04:17
WOOHOO... that's how safe apple stuff are. ever rmb how mac fanboys always say that apple stuff are more secure? well, this just proves their point right?
#29 VGVL on 12 Mar 2009 - 04:50
I thought those cards were only supposed to work when they were activated by being purchased, the code of an iTunes card sitting on a shelf should have no value.

Why Apple would honor an unpurchased code is beyond me.
#30 lunamonkey on 12 Mar 2009 - 17:21
What a ripoff. Once redeemed it only lets me buy Chinese music. :X!
#31 MytMowse on 12 Mar 2009 - 17:24
Well I guess it is time to make a new algorithm then.
