Taipei Times reports Microsoft Taiwan has announced during a press meet that Internet Explorer 8 will be released on March 20 in the local Taiwanese version. It was earlier predicted that Microsoft will RTM IE 8 in the week of March 16. Now we can expect the release of Internet Explorer 8 alongside MIX09 on March 19.

The Internet Explorer 8 sessions are now live on the MIX website which also includes the keynote address by Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager of Internet Explorer team at Microsoft.

As the Taiwanese version is getting released on March 20, we could expect Internet Explorer 8 (English version) being released in MIX09.

For now, the version information of IE 8 in the About screen does not reflect Release Candidate 1 in the recent Windows 7 builds 7048 and 7057

And here is how it looks in the Windows 7 build 7032

This is like the March 18 release of IE5 back in 1999, the last release of IE I actually liked. This time of course I won't have to wait 3 months for Microsoft to send me a CD

Any news of the rumors about IE migrating to a new engine? (Webkit?)

I doubt they'll move to WebKit.
They'll stick Trident.

No, probably not. Maybe through microsoft.com, however.

There is almost always a gap of a couple of months between RTM announcement and WU availability.

What do all these screenshots and pre-RTM build tags have to do with the story?

Yes, yes, I understand that IE 8 has actually been in development.

To show that the later builds of IE8 lack "Release Candidate 1". The last screenshot has it.

Unfortunately those builds only reflect against the Windows build number which is generaly the case when it comes to a version bundled with Windows. Also the IE8 Win7 branch is slightly different too, yes IE is finished but cannot fully compare Win7 IE8 shots to XP or Vista ones.

I figured, but only after I made that comment. Thanks for the clarification.

How many people are actually going to bother upgrading to IE8 because there are thousands of websites which still do not support the new CSS...?

I haven't bothered keeping up with this release... does this mean that MS is supporting a new(er) standard that none of the others do yet?

No.

I've no idea what the two of you are implying but:

IE8 has better CSS support than IE7. It's not as good as the other big browsers, but it's better. Upgrade, regardless of whether you actively use it.

I think IE8 has the fullest support of CSS 2.1 among all browsers, which is the latest CSS spec to date.

There is an issue with IE8 betas and McAfee Security Suite that required me to remove the beta. (Security Center would not display) Has this been fixed in RC1 or the forthcomming RTF version?
Thanks
