5 out of the 6 computers today that I upgraded to IE8 caused problems with the sidebar, which led to more problems. This occured in both 32 and 64 bit systems.

which "sidebar", you mean Vista Sidebar?

Huh. That's not good.

Heh...that you call a problem? I've installed IE8 ENGLISH on my Vista Home Premium 32bit SLOVAK and after restart was system unable to apply any msstyle, Aero or Basic... I could use only lame classic theme. Event viewer was clean, services were running, but when i tried to apply some theme i've get error message with something like visual style was unable to apply or whatever...

Btw. my system is clean, well maintained and no crazy experiments done or utilities used were on it and still this sh*t happened... And uninstallation was not helpfull neither and only system restore gave me finally back Aero. I don't call this a RTM... English versions of MS software were always working on Windows with other language. Native slovak Vista in anyway only from 80% or so translated and many system tools are english, so WTF?

this is way it will go to automatic update after a month, so ms can use the normal users as beta testers

You probably need a cream for the rash that tin-foil hat is causing on your head.

Seriously, have you ever tried IE8 final? Or are you propagating anti-ms drivel for the fun of it? IE8 is far more stable the alot of software release by other companies.

It still feels kinda beta-ish to me also. I have been reading of lots of different LITLE issues all over the net. Definitely nothing showstopping but definitely an insane amount of bugs being reported for something that has not been out for 24 hours.

The end of April. Seems okay to me. They should really push IE8 so that those who are still using IE6 could get their browser finally updated, and stop crying when some adware/spyware/virus infect their PCs via IE6.
#3.1 Chaks on 19 Mar 2009 - 22:03
Yea, they should remove IE 6 from every system it runs and automatically update to IE 8! IE 6 is so old now that it can R.I.P!
#3.2 neoraptor on 19 Mar 2009 - 22:21
well those who are using ie6 will continue using it, otherwise they would have already installed ie7
#3.3 andrewbares on 19 Mar 2009 - 23:43
Maybe they don't know that they should get IE 7? That's Google's and Opera's whole argument, that people don't know about Chrome and Opera. Same thing applies to Microsoft's newer versions.

What did it exactly do to the sidebar, how can a browser break the vista sidebar?
#4.1 Ideas Man on 19 Mar 2009 - 23:27
The sidebar probably uses the IE engine to render the gadgets.

I'm also curious how it broke the sidebar gadgets though, I suspect they're poorly written gadgets though, didn't break mine.
#4.2 andrewbares on 19 Mar 2009 - 23:44
True true, or he could have viruses. Who knows.
#4.3 Titoist on 20 Mar 2009 - 00:50
Upon boot "Sidebar failed to load and must close" message pops up.

I guess theres only a difference between Windows Update & Automatic Update for XP/2003? For Vista/2008 theres just windows update i thought?
#5.1 +TCLN Ryster on 19 Mar 2009 - 22:38
No. Although in Vista and 2008 its all exposed through a single interface so it may appear that way, there is still a separation between automatic updates and running the Windows Update process manually.

i run the sidebar and upgraded to IE8 and do not have sidebar issues so you must have malware or something wrong with your sidebar.

Will be marking this thing as "don't show again" as soon as it shows up on the update site after trying it for just an hour last night.

5 crashes in that amount of time, plus it takes a day and a half just to start up!! [snipped]

If you're having problems, uninstalling it is an option, as is posting in the Neowin support forum. Please don't post flame-bait, though.
