As a side note, this release is not available for the current Windows 7 beta users and is only available for previous versions of Windows.

I don't think it will be a problem for me at all really. I've been a fan of fx for years, but lately i am just tired of it.

The RC1 build of IE8 is still there on the above quoted link. NO sign of IE8 RTM as of now.

12:00 in EDT is 16:00 / 4:00 pm in the UK.

At the moment, at least.. It's extra tricky now that US has moved on to daylight saving times, but Europe still hasn't. The normal time zone differences do not quite apply.
#9.4 Fubar on 19 Mar 2009 - 10:16
thanks for that we move to BST on the 29th of march

Ah, but most of the United States are on daylight savings time now, so EST-5 became EDT-4. (Just like my zone, is MDT-6 instead of the usual MST-7).
#9.7 jstillion on 19 Mar 2009 - 14:51
What surprised me is they given an EST time, usually it's Pacific.
#10 thealexweb on 19 Mar 2009 - 08:08
All I need now is SP2 to make a new up to date Vista installation disc. Wonder who long I'll have to wait for SP2?
(2 replies) #11 TRC on 19 Mar 2009 - 08:20
If it's done why don't they just put it up now. Instead of making every one wait for a specific time and having the server hammered.
#11.1 Tom W on 19 Mar 2009 - 08:25
I expect it's cause they are readying servers in preparation and it's better for them to take a hit and measure the traffic than just release it willy nilly.
#11.2 Jugalator on 19 Mar 2009 - 09:37
I wish they'd just put up a torrent file early on.

Of course, they'd still need to prepare servers like this for those who don't want to, don't know how to, or can't, run BitTorrent, but imagine the massive amounts of users that would now be able to get it early on without stressing their servers.
#12 iamwhoiam on 19 Mar 2009 - 08:56
Time to update the HD images.

:-) great...
(2 replies) #16 Jugalator on 19 Mar 2009 - 10:06
Why are people excited, and looking forward to what in this?

I feel the most major update here was to CSS 2 support, but that's more something that applies to easening the web development in the future, not a powerful end user feature. Hmm, otherwise, it had some speed improvements too, but nothing massive and it can still be debated if competitors aren't faster. Then there's the stuff like web clips etc, but I'd certainly not jump up and down for that stuff. That's on the scale of a mediocre extension to Firefox to me.

Well, to quote Jen Barber...Ich Bin Ein Nerd!
#16.2 +dead.cell on 19 Mar 2009 - 17:33
I dunno. I work in the opposite way. Held off from using Firefox, finally decided to try it... then got all excited calling all my friends like the dork I am.
#17 BrainDedd on 19 Mar 2009 - 10:28
Bah. Noon EDT = 6pm South African time.

I have not been a fan of Internet Explorer since I laid eyes on FF many years ago, but I have to say the speed and ease of use with IE8 might change my mind which is always open to try new things.... like Chrome...which i quickly uninstalled after a half hour....

Looks better and feels faster than IE7 although it does use a lot of memory.

It would be silly to download the RC1 today when the official build is going to be released later (its irrelevant to whether or not theres any difference).
(3 replies) #24 SoLoR1 on 19 Mar 2009 - 13:13
its already downloadable on "certain" sites IE8.8.00.6001.18702.RTW.ENU, inclueds server, vista and xp versions both x86 and x64. BTW for all those complaining they are on win7, win7 is inlcuding "RTM" version of IE8 since 7048 build.
#24.1 Bargain_man on 19 Mar 2009 - 13:37
no its not IE8 on Win7 is version 8.0.7057.0 i am guessing it will be included in the next build though

no, IE8 in win7 is special it doesnt follow IE8 build numbers for XP/Vista/2003. You 1st see it lost its RC1 status in about screen in build 7048.

I guess this must be your first time downloading something microsoft? If this actually comes out at noon on time it will be the first time in at least the past year or two they have done so. Don't hold your breath. Aim more torwards later today at the VERY earliest, but more likely tomorrow. They screw us on SP's, Beta's, RTM, anything that is supposed to be released at noon, NEVER is.

Sorry for being negative but unfortunately in this situation the truth IS negative.
#25.1 xendrome on 19 Mar 2009 - 14:53
Yes, they screw us every time on FREE software/updates... it really ****es me off to no end I tell you.....
#25.2 donBoomy on 19 Mar 2009 - 16:20
How do you feel about this now? I'm liking the direction MS is in.
#26 +DonC on 19 Mar 2009 - 14:02
IE8 RTM is available now:

Edit: no it's not.
(1 reply) #27 babyHacker on 19 Mar 2009 - 14:28
I have switched from Opera to IE8 and IE7 Pro for now. I used to be a hardcore Opera user for years but it really irks me that there is no spell check. When Opera 10 comes out, I will probably switch back. IE7 Pro does not work as well in IE8 RC1 as it does IE7 so when the final IE8 comes out, their developers will hopefully improve its operation with this new browser.
#28 2Cold Scorpio on 19 Mar 2009 - 14:53
Awesome! I re-installed Vista last week to move everything over to 64-bit (I finally got atound to it. lol). I was using IE8 RC1 on the previous install, but have been gutting through using IE7 for the last week to upgrade fresh to IE8 RTM this week. Don't get me wrong, I really liked IE7...intil I started using IE8 RC1. lol

huh? IE8 has been in the works for how long now, had a couple public beta releases, a RTM announcement a little ago and this is all the sudden out of no where?

Well if previous builds are anything to go by, I'll be gving this a miss.
I found it slower that FF and pages just seemed to crash at random.
Besides, with FF addons there is no question which is better. Ad-Blocker, download assistant, Gmail checker, script blocker etc. What has IE got to match that?

http://www.ie7pro.com/ = Ad blocker, download manager and more.
#30.2 +dead.cell on 19 Mar 2009 - 17:36
That works with IE8 just fine? I read it says IE6-7 and above, but would like to know how that actually runs.

As for slower than Firefox, is your Firefox 3.0 or 3.1? I say this because to me, it makes quite a difference.

Compared to IE7, ie8 is slow as hell. Now it takes 3 times as long to load as firefox, whereas before ie7 loaded in half the time of ff. MS what have you done??? Also freezes for a few seconds on opening new tabs.

WTF my urls are GREY! I hate it.

I can't read my address bar.

I spent time and money making my URLs look nice.

MS is taking away the branding / feel of my site.

Does this annoy anyone else?
#39.1 andrewbares on 19 Mar 2009 - 20:49
It's so that you can identify the domain of the site easily, like on this article, the URL shows up with "neowin.net" in black and everything else in grey.

It's more simple for most people. Your case is most likely more rare, but that's pretty interesting, you actually managed to make URL's look nice! What's your website?

It annoys me, but im sure i'll get used to it... maybe? What annoys me, is its now sooooo slow. Takes 10 seconds to load on startup, and 7 seconds to load open the first blank tab. Anyone have any ideas? Compared to ie 7 this blows
#40 .beta on 19 Mar 2009 - 21:59
I bet they will put this in the next Windows 7 release. =)
anyone confirm that they fixed the website issues?

I've always used Firefox on my Mac and XP Professional PC's...
JeffreytGilbert, why is Safari better than Firefox? Explain...
