If you're a student looking to purchase Microsoft Office on the cheap you may be in luck.

Microsoft has just announced the start of their Ultimate Steal Promotion. The new program, through a partnership with both The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Society of Hispanic Professionals in Engineering (SHPE) Inc., is targeted towards twelve Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic student organizations at colleges and universities in the United States. Eligible students will be able to purchase Microsoft Office Ultimate for a cool $59.95 (U.S.). That's a very whopping 91% off of the retail value of the software, which usually sells for $679.95 (U.S.).

An IT Manager from SHPE, Frank Barragan, had nothing but praise for Microsoft's effort to reach out to his foundation's student base. "We commend Microsoft for its continuous efforts to empower diverse communities with the right tools for a bright future," said Mr. Barragan.

In order to be eligible for the Ultimate Steal Promotion, you must be currently enrolled in a U.S. educational institution, carry at least a 0.5 course credit, and have a valid school e-mail address. Further details can be found at http://www.TheUltimateSteal.com.

Hasn't this been around for like a year now? I know I took advantage of this as a student at the begining of this semester.

I agree, old news. I ordered this some time ago through my .edu address.

This deal is dumb. One copy per address. My roomate got it before I did, now I can't get it. Support will not let me Do they think students live on their own?

Might seem like an obvious question, but did you try using your home address?
#4.2 Intelman on 25 Mar 2009 - 18:42
Yes, but my billing address will always be the same Or support somehow blocked me from using whatever address I want.

You should be able to put additional info in the Address 2 field, like Suite 200 or something. Post Office doesn't care, and it'll be enough info to the computer to think it's a different address.

Yeah, and you can install it on up 2 PC's, but no more then that. This is coming directly from Microsoft telling me this when I ordered it.

ask your room mate to install it also on your pc as it's 3 pc software.

I purchased mine last year for my fiancee as she was doing her masters and the OU had the offer.

Why is there a lot of race society's involved?

Not related to the student program mentioned: I received Office 2007 Enterprise for $23.10 shipped under the Home Use Program (HUP) with my employer.

There are normally great deals on different office products. You just have to hunt them down since normally they are not advertised well.

#8 Alladaskill on 25 Mar 2009 - 18:22
So you have to be black or hispanic to take advantage of this?
I have office, I was just curious.

*edit* nevermind. Looks like you only need a valid .edu account.

Wake me up when I can get Win7 for 91% off...
#9.1 The XO on 26 Mar 2009 - 01:36
Yeah, that would be a steal for sure!
#9.2 cybertimber2008 on 27 Mar 2009 - 02:32
Err, MORE of a steal?

91% off of a $675 product would surely be less than Win7 Ult that will go for what, $450?

The better savings is in Office Ult.

Why are just BLACKS & HISPANICS getting this??
#10.1 toadeater on 26 Mar 2009 - 00:15
Yes, this is in very bad taste by MS.
#10.2 andrewbares on 26 Mar 2009 - 01:46
no, I'm pretty sure that you only need a valid .edu account.
#10.3 Memnochxx on 26 Mar 2009 - 03:06
Where are people getting this impression? All you need is a .edu email address.
#10.4 rm20010 on 26 Mar 2009 - 21:35
Just because two ethnic educational funding groups are endorsing this promotion doesn't mean they're limiting the program to people of certain races. It just so happens that these minorities make up a sizeable population at 12 of the following institutions listed here:

http://store.digitalriver.com/servlet/Cont...&pbPage=schools

But keep in mind that only these schools get the promotion; not all .edu addresses will work.

Chances are, if your school isn't listed there, it probably has another program in place that allows you to get Vista or Office for even cheaper prices.

Ha ha ha, my school offers Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 for $15 each.
#13.1 Mystic on 25 Mar 2009 - 22:21
I'll take legitimate licenses for both, thanks. No messing with WGA or blocking programs that ruin your activation after a month or two.
#13.2 sorlag on 25 Mar 2009 - 23:04
@(deleted comment): Youre so failed if you download illegal versions if it is available for $15 ... Where talking about the massive Office pack and not some small worthless Shareware.

I agree, its about time everyone purchases legal software. Besides why take a chance and end up with more than you bargained for with hidden malware, spyware, worms, and more?
#14 King Antonius on 25 Mar 2009 - 19:52

I got office 2007 ultimate about 16 months ago and vista ultimate product red about 2 months ago.

Microsoft says that their biggest competitors in the OS section is theirselves because so many people get Windows illegally.

Nice research that really underlines how shockingly un-new this news is...(go UK)
#20.2 mmck on 26 Mar 2009 - 10:11
I've been spreading the word since it started - obviously this hasn't been spread around enough though - students really should spread the knowledge more as its a huge saving.
#21 Juski814 on 26 Mar 2009 - 00:09
My university offered Office 2003 & 2007 for PC, and Office 2004 & 2008 for Mac for $12 each. I was able to enjoy all flavors due to that wonderful deal.
#22 flashdata on 26 Mar 2009 - 11:36
The worse part about this is that there will be students that will download Office anyways...

AND WE GET IT THAT IT IS OLD NEWS. You don't have to repeat it every other post...
