Skype and Apple are teaming up to bring Skype to the iPhone for all Skype users to make and receive phone calls using an application on the iPhone. The introduction of Skype is long overdue for many users, as there is already a similar Skype application for Windows Mobile devices.

A tipster released information that the iPhone application could be seen in the AppStore as early as next week for download. An announcement might be heard next Wednesday in Las Vegas for the CTIA Wireless trade show for the mobile industry market.

The Internet based company, which allows users to make and receive phone calls directly from any Internet connection, could see a rise in users if the application is released. The already 405 million worldwide user base has seen significant growth since the end of 2005 with only 74.7 million user accounts.

The application is expected to be a free download, but requires users to have a paid Skype account in order to use the application functions.

I think that is a 100% certainty. Sadly.

Actually I don't think so... the Windows Mobile version works over 3G and Wifi... but this is Apple that we're talking about.
Also isn't there a 'Fring' client that works on the iPhone? (Fring makes Skype calls)

I am with 3 Mobile here in Australia and they have a Skype service where you get 4000 free minutes a month and they I think that they relay Skype calls via their 3G phone network... perhaps you might get that kind of implementation too.

Fring can make Skype calls on 3g, but the quality isn't very good. Well its not good in WiFi either

Yea, I was going to say that Windows Mobile had Skype for years already, but good thing that the author put that detail in there.

Hmm, I don't know if it'll be officially supported, but I imagine with a bit of jailbreaking you could get a microphone on the earphones to work.

I thought the second gen touch had line-in support, for voice recorder apps and stuff.

Yeah. the Fring audio was TERRIBLE. ****-poor quality, noticeable delay etc. etc.
Skype will be AWESOME.

yeah, i tried using skype through fring on wifi and 3G. quality wasnt the best, but it was better than making a long distance call while roaming outside of the country

The application is expected to be a free download, but requires users to have a paid Skype account in order to use the application functions.

What does this mean? Does it mean you have to be paying skype first before you can use the application on the iPhone? If I am not a paying user for skype, I can download the application, but it is going to be a white elephant occupying disk space?

Clarifications would be welcome.

well, on a computer, or other mobile phone, you can get the skype app, and make a free account. the only time you have to pay is if you want to make calls to landline or mobile numbers. you can msg or make calls to other users on skype for free
#6 owziee on 27 Mar 2009 - 11:02
Having to pay skype to use it!!!? Thats insane, it's been free to use on windows mobile for years.

Maybe I'm missing something here...but why would someone need Sype to makes call s on a mobile when they can just use their mobile to do it?

to make long distance or international calls that would be more expensive to do using the traditional cellphone method?
