iPhone 3.0 gets video MMS

The iPhone is getting a major upgrade in the summer with iPhone firmware 3.0, including a lot of new features, some already offered by extra apps in the AppStore, but pre-loaded and free for the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch.

One of the new exciting features that hackers were able to unlock is Video MMS. Users can send, receive and playback video directly from their iPhone to iPhone, meaning both MMS and recording capabilities will be available in the summer. Hardware specs were not yet verified, but it seems the new rumored iPhone and the iPhone 3G will be the only 2 handsets available to make (video) MMS, leaving the 1st gen iPhone and iPod Touch out of the loop.

and iPod Touch out of the loop.

What, did someone expect to send a video MMS without cell service, or a camera for that matter?

People are thick enough to not realise it, so they just stick it in the article to be on the safe side.

Dude, people have asked me why videos don't work on their iPod Shuffles. And they were being dead serious. So assuming that the iPod Touch which looks similar to the iPhone can take video isn't even that bad.

not nice for me I have a 1st Gen iPhone, ugh.
#6.1 dimithrak on 03 Apr 2009 - 20:03
u should consider yourself lucky.. I think buying the iPhone 3G right after you purchased the iPhone first gen was just a waste of money. All the same features except for 3G.

Now that apple will definitely come out with a new model in June.. you should prolly consider buying that. Thats what I plan on doing.. if my budget permits that is.

I'm out of the loop as well. Sad move on apple's part. The first generation iPhone can do MMS easily... they are just lazy and want people to upgrade anyways. I'm not paying $10 more just to have 3G... don't need it.

No, it can't. Not only would video MMS bring edge to it's knees, the device lacks the hardware requirements needed to do MMS.
#6.4 andrewbares on 03 Apr 2009 - 22:39
Free cell phones can do video MMS on edge perfectly fine. Apple just wants upgrade money.

So a "cheepy" (Your word, Not mine) made phone includes tech a 3G iphone only now decides to do....

what exactly was your point?

Also my EDGE phone can do video MMS just fine thanks, I think I got it in 2004 or something.
#6.7 InsaneNutter on 04 Apr 2009 - 08:59
In the UK o2 imposed a 300kb limit on MMS messages, it’s not like you can send massive video files over MMS so there’s no reason why the first gen Iphone can’t do it.

The phone is perfectly capable of sending a video MMS, as is my Ngage from 2004 (if the video was recorded on another phone ) Apple just think it’s about time to ask 1st gen Iphone users to buy a new iphone.

i am glad that iPod Touch users are not left out on this too! i don't mean mms but many other features that is going to be offered in iPhone!

At a cost of $10 to upgrade.

$10 whole dollars! Why that's like 2% of what my iPod cost me. Christ that's a lot of money.

Screw it, I'm not going to pay them for the work they're doing on something that's not being forced on me.

If I could just lead you over here to exhibit A, which is hardware/software developers who do not make you pay for software updates for a single piece of hardware.

I think the point is, you already pay Apple a huuuuge profit margin, why the hell should you have to pay more again?

As much as I'd like to agree with your sentiment, there are Windows Mobile Phone providers that won't offer any kind of upgrade plan to a new Windows Mobile OS. I know some people who would gladly pay the $10 to get their WM phone up to date with the latest features.
#7.5 andrewbares on 03 Apr 2009 - 23:25
Exactly. Software updates are supposed to be free.

Ha ha, it's soo fake. The second pic is just a text saying 'Attachment: 1 Video'. The original story was on April 1st I think.

Anyway, whats the use for it on the current iPhone?

I think it's obvious. You can send videos with it. Every single decent cellphone sold now can. My €50 Sony Ericsson does it all very well since three years.
#8.2 Jonnoy on 03 Apr 2009 - 22:01
i know i'm stating the obvious, but we cant record videos on the 3G, and I don't think apple would incorporate it into a device that can't even harness it properly. And you gotta admit, it does look fake! Looks like a picture message with a 'Play' glyph over it, and an ordinary text above it
#9 CentralDogma on 03 Apr 2009 - 21:49
Just because video MMS can be enabled on the current 3G iPhone doesn't mean it will be. It's far more likely this is a feature intended for the next iPhone revision.

Yeah...talk about features that should have been in the original iPhone on day one... ridiculous.
#10.2 PsykX on 04 Apr 2009 - 14:37
I think you mean late on this feature, yeah. A lot.

But late "as usual"? Herm, they innovated so much by making the iPhone that one must be blind to say these kind of things Same for other stuff that I won't name because there's too many.
#11 m.keeley on 03 Apr 2009 - 22:51
Well that didn't take long to release another feature that has been on every other phone for how long? The iPhone/Touch are great but there are glaring omissions in the software such as this that should have been there from day one not from version 3. However with this, the other known features in v3 and the rumored camera upgrade there's only Flash support and background tasks still left at the top of my wish list.

Apple is amazing. I`m not a fanboy, but I`m really impressed by their management and products. Great company.
Why should we only bash them?
#13.1 Exosphere on 04 Apr 2009 - 00:03
You're impressed?
Wow, you should check out a Nokia, Sony or HTC phone - you'll be blown away.
Sure the iPhone interface is good, but that's where it stops.
The iPhone is years behind the others, wake up people.

Bashing them is childish and stupid. Fan boy talk is childish and stupid. I'm on eof the few who like both apple and microsoft and refuse to give in to the fights about whos better, because neirther one is super great.

You know Nokia makes phones other than those freebies you get with contracts, right? In fact, most Nokia phones that I have seen seem to be able to take a lot of punishment.

1. Only if you buy a cheap one
2. Clearly he's talking about Sony-Ericsson handsets
3. If you don't like it so be it. others do and they aren't bad phones

Anyway I don't get the mentality where you have now called other handsets "cheap" in a topic that is about Apple only NOW introducing video MMS to their own devices.

#13.8 PsykX on 04 Apr 2009 - 14:42
The iPhone is years behind the others, wake up people.

For a few features, yeah.

Wait until you see the next iPhone in June or July. You'll be simply amazed and you'll retire these words. I've read a lot of things about Firmware 3.0, upcoming features and rumoured hardware, and it's simply amazing.

Keep in mind also that rumours about iPhones are easier to confirm because Apple has to talk with a lot of people before puting the iPhone out, and compared to OS X, the firmware of the iPhone is analyzed from beginning to end, giving us hints about the upcoming hardware and stuff. It's also easy to look at the metadata of pictures to see if it was taken with a new iPhone, and then it's possible to detect the specs.

I'm not saying the word rumour equals "the truth" when it's about the iPhone, but it has much more cedibility and is easier to prove.

Thank you sir. You have made my day. It's exciting to find someone on the internet who hasn't given in to fanboy/troll impulses, and knows that computers/smartphones are just tools.
People use the tools that perform the tasks they need, and that's about it.
No need to get all upset when someone doesn't use the tool you do. Be happy that there are so many choices to pick from!
