Digitimes is reporting that Apple has placed orders for 3.2 mega pixel cameras that are designated for the next revision of the iPhone. The supplier to Apple will be Omnivision who beat out STMicroelectronics and Aptina Imaging for the Apple orders the source cited.

Also being reported is that Apple ordered "5-megapixel CIS orders for another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year." No other reference was given on what the potential new product may be but there have been hints that it could possible be included for the next revision of the iPod Touch.

As with any rumor take it with a grain of salt as nothing is confirmed until Apple announces it. Regardless the 3.2 mega pixel upgrade for the iPhone seems extremely plausible and should make it into the next version of the phone which may launch in June.

You should check out the camera on the HTC Touch Diamond. It does a lot of things wrong or badly, but the camera is one thing that's done right.

Still no comparison with real photo cameras! (even with cheap ones)

how clueless. Is true, "cameraphones" trended to be useless but this was true 3 or 4 years ago. Now my 5 megapixel camera is real enough to my old 5 megapixel semi-pro Canon S2IS .

actually this won't be changing any soon, since all phone use plastic lenses which have an 80% flaw lenses.

A glass lenses tends to have 10% MAX flaw and some really fine lenses might have a 1% flaw.

I'm surprised, I would think they would make a bigger leap. The Samsung Omnia has a 5mp and 640x480 video. (Verizon charges an extra $30 a month for the phone, so I didnt go with it) So I would think that Apple would move to something like that or at least a better lense.

That would lower their profit margins to reasonable levels... can't have that

Ok, fair point. Couldn't they simply make up for it on the data transmission of said photos/video?

Well Apple isn't the telco so no.

So it's still going to be sub-par but premium priced. At least it sounds as though they're going to add video recording, now that's innovation.

Lol, innovation at it's greatest.

3.2 MP, when many phones nowadays are sporting 5MP or more. But of course, [< snipped > - Calum] will just say something like, Oh 3.2 is more than enough, we dont need more than that, we just use the phone for calling pretty much...

And then when we ask why they don't have a regular phone... they'll say it's because of all the iPhone's FEATURES.

Would be cool but seems bit odd since apple tend to like leaving ipod touches out of the loop with no camera and no gps.

Yeah, I can't imagine a 3.2mp camera on the iPhone and a 5mp camera on an iPod touch :p Just seems a bit off to me. We have to remember that the iPod touch is just that, an iPod.

By name yeah, in function it's more a MID maybe just create new name multimedia mobile internet device MMID to suit the multiple media functions plus internet capability. Biggest thing i would fine handy on ipod touch though more then a camera would be the gps since alot of apps use it and is quite handy specially if turn by turn is coming.

I agree, GPS would be quite handy. Maybe that's one of Apple's supposed upcoming products, something between an iPod touch and an iPhone, although I doubt it.

5 megapixel camera? I'd say they're probably for some MacBooks. Maybe. I dunno.

What I care more about is... Will it have a flash?! The iPhone camera is unusable in low light conditions!
#10 AnthoWin on 03 Apr 2009 - 20:51
3.2mp is good enough but I wonder if the iPhone's software is good enough to make the quality of the photos better than average 3.2mp cameras (or hopes they put in a sensor!
#11 TonyLock on 03 Apr 2009 - 23:38
3M camera on the from and a 5M camera on the back of the phone.
#12 Exosphere on 04 Apr 2009 - 00:09
I think people get sucked into the mega pixel numbers, it doesn't matter if the software is upgraded to be 10 mega pixels, the fact is, the lens & focus are where the quality is.
I've seen a 2m blow away a 3.2m just because of the lens & manual focus.

Your photos might have more pixels with this upgrade, but you won't really beat the likes of Sony,Nokia or HTC for photo quality at the same price.

So is this going to be the trend? Great phone with the same camera performance of phones 3 years older. The iphone has to have the 5mp!
#13.1 InsaneNutter on 04 Apr 2009 - 09:12
That’s what I’m thinking, my N95 from 2007 can record 640x480 video and takes 5mp pictures.

I have actually considered getting an Iphone when i next want a new phone however hardware wise the Iphone just doesn’t compete in a lot of areas.
#14 ambushed on 04 Apr 2009 - 02:42
"Confirmed" rumors told us we were getting 5mp when the 3g came out. Ahem. Rumors are nothing more
#15 ThePitt on 04 Apr 2009 - 16:51
lol @ Rumor. If I recall well with that phone wasnt that far that you couldnt copy and paste, haha. Even my old crappy nokia 3220 could do that. And now they 'release' a rumor about a camera of 3.2 which is I was using with my another crappy phone for more than a year now...
What the media can do with the market...
