According to a blog entry in Dell's website, Dell has tested hundreds of Dell systems with Windows 7 Beta and has found the results to be promising. Dell notes that the following results were observed when testing Windows 7 Beta on Dell PCs.- Noticeable improvements in boot to desktop times (versus Vista) in many systems
- Almost all existing Vista drivers are compatible
- Good Vista Application compatibility (including the IE 8 compatibility mode)
- Transcoding (ripping) media files is faster than Vista
It is good to see Dell testing Windows 7 in their systems at an early stage.Personally, I have found Dell Laptops with Windows Vista to have many problems, especially with the display drivers and had to re-install often or call their support all the time. But if they are addressing these issues early with Windows 7, then we can expect good turnaround of Windows 7 machines from Dell.
If you are running Windows 7 already on your Dell laptop/PC, you can share your experiences here with Dell

It's easier for them because Windows 7 doesn't need new drivers for basically everything. Of course they only report on good progress.
They have 9400M in their 1099$ XPS laptops ... not sure what more you could want.
To all the Vista haters: Windows 7 is largely based on Vista.

refined vista...the xp/me analaogus
Well... 2000/XP?

True dat.
Windows 7 is Vista Completed.
Wow, thanks for that. Tell us something we don't know. In other news, the sky is blue.
Not always
hahaha...ryt sky isn't blue always..
Actually, you have that backwards. The sky IS black, it's just that defraction of light in the atmosphere during the day makes it seem blue.
It's my "daily driver". I keep a daily backup (just in case), I've been using it as my work OS, and I'll switch to it when it comes out.
I am looking forward to Windows 7 though, I upgraded the RAM so am looking forward to using it in the future when I get its HD fixed!

Yea, thats because of what Vista was primarily. See they messed up, I feel they sat on their hands for too long after XP was released, and rushed vista the last two years of even announcing a new OS to come out. This is part 1 bad. Part 2 bad, they tried making vista run using 1000s of new code lines, re-engineering many parts of it, making it require many new drivers and application support. That is where they faulted.
Vista was not bad, but everyone was used to XP (heh well being around the absolute longest before another release makes sense why), running on 512 ram or even less. Vista had many new parts that required more than just "installing" it, which made it 'appear' to be a crappy OS. Not true. Just no one was prepared for such an upgrade.
It goes something like this:
Win3.1: New
Win95: Major
Win98: Major
Win98se: Minor
WinME: Minor
Alternating
Win2000: Major
WinNT: Minor
WinXP: Major
WinVista: Major (fault, should have been minor)
Win7: Minor (should have been major)
Win8: Major (should be minor)
As you can see there are some issues how they went about it. Technically, they should have (especially after the time left hanging with XP) made vista a minor release, keeping backwards compatibility a must. But giving new things and not much of new requirements. THEN (or now as its present) make Win7 a major release with everyone happy with vista for win7 to come out big.
They didnt do that, they made vista a major upgrade, and now 7 a minor one (as many state all the time, win7 as many may hate to agree, IS based off vista but like 98se was to 98.). Once 7 comes out and the world is happy, they will change 8 to be drastic, so when people want to upgrade they can (because win7 will still be fine in many cases), and not be forced to (as was with Vista).
Now with dell testing, with plenty of compatibility, it shows it was really a minor release (which is good so there is a bounce back from the vista ordeal.). Nice.
My feeling.

Eh slightly wrong on the NT side:
NT 3.1 New
NT 3.5 Minor
NT 4.0 Major
Win200 Major
WinXP Minor (Major for consumers coming from 9x kernels)
Vista Major (was going to be major either way)
Win7 Minor (Major if a lot of people are coming from XP)
Win8 Major hopefully, we'll see.
It was really late in the cycle for Vista not to be a major upgrade due to what they wanted and then the code reset. The same thing was seen with NT 4.0 and Windows 2000, MS didn't realise a minor version between NT 4 and 2000 and changed a lot, active directoy being one of the huge new things introduced.
WinNT: Minor
WinXP: Major
That's not at all how that went.

Yea...
NT 4 (Major),
NT 5/win2000 (Major),
NT 5.1/XP (Minor),
NT 6/Vista (minor),
NT 6.1/Win 7 (Minor)
What EXACTLY is that supposed to mean? Would you prefer if they made some techie OS that was impossible for the mainstream public to use? Would that be better?
Haha talk about defensive aggressive...
Udedenkz said Windows 7 would be a good OS for the average Joe. That seems pretty clear to me. Where did he mention that he would prefer an overcomplicated 'techie OS'?
Yes, have tested 7 on a spare hard drive. Fun thing with most Latitudes is it's easy to switch hard drives. Many of the icon probs in Vista are present in 7. Boot up time is fast, but I hibernate so boot up on Vista is far faster for me than simply starting from scratch. Hibernation sucked on XP. Never worked right. Speed on 7? haven't noticed that much difference. Nor in the memory. Saving maybe 400 mb. And running CSI vids from Netflix is still jittery. And that superbar, I've gotten used to it a bit, but it still hits me wrong. I've also run into driver issues with 7. Have an Olympus P-10 thermal printer which works great in Vista, but won't install in 7. Still looking for a workaround for that. It's harder to find thermal printers. But they are so much better than ink. And Olympus is priced right. Albeit it was $20 for a refurbished one that was $300. But I got one for dad and he uses it like there is no tomorrow. Printing out tons of photo's from grandpa's negs I scanned Summer to fall last year. So until that driver is available, Windows 7 is like someone said above.. a minor upgrade. Quite right about Win98 to Win98SE. Although 98se was stability issues. Not speed issues. Vista is no ME. ME truely sucked. I just have no clue why so many hated Vista. If people hated Vista, I don't see how they'd like 7 any better but then again I love Vista, and haven't had much fun with 7. Miss the sidebar too. Which from the screenshots looks like they me be toying with it again.
I am also running windows 7 on an xps 410 and a dimmension 9200 one with a 7900gt gpu and one wiuth a 7800gtx. these machine are running great also.
The funny part with windows 7 the action center says i am having graphics driver problems but i dont see anything to support it.
I remember when Vista was in BETA, Dell specifically said that it sucked so much that it wasnt worth testing. This is the reason why Vista didn't have a good start. For some reason, everyone felt compelled to attack it without even seeing it. Its like Win 7 bias was already at play before Vista was even released.
It sounds to me like they're planning to reuse those drivers you hate so much to make the Dell owners cherish their experience just a little bit more, lol.
