Apple doubling production of rumored upcoming iPhones

Ahh, the months before June; always a good period for iPhone rumors, and this time around is definitely no exception. There have been a huge amount of rumors pointing to an (inevitable) iPhone release this year, and here's one more for your tastebuds: Apple has, according to AppleInsider, doubled production of multiple upcoming iPhone models for a release this year.

This statement is the belief of an analyst named Ben Reitzes, who works for the firm Barclay's Capital, who states that "Apple is readying a new iPhone that will ship in June with an upgraded camera that could deliver big improvements to the iPhone experiences, including both still and video capabilities 'with possibly another camera on the front for video chat.'" He also thinks that Apple will offer multiple iPhone models, that differ in features and not just storage space. This wouldn't come as a big surprise, as multiple sources are saying that iPhone production has more than doubled thanks to orders for "multiple new models", to be ready for a June release.

The two models are believed to be as follows: the high end would feature video capability, a better camera and 32gb of storage, whereas a low end model would have no video, less storage and perhaps not have WiFi. Lacking WiFi could be to please Chinese carriers, thinks AppleInsider. The low end would probably retail for $100-$150, with different data plans as well.

Time will tell whether all these rumors are fact or fiction, but things are looking towards the latter. Keep an eye out later in the year to see what Apple has up its sleeve.

They drop WiFi on lower end models, watch how many people flip out.

They don't really have a choice if they want to sell it in China. Chinese law bans wifi in cell phones.
So if they have to produce the wifi free version anyway, it makes sense for them to also offer it in other markets.
#1.2 dagamer34 on 06 Apr 2009 - 21:55
If they are dropping WiFi, it will likely be a Chinese-only model. I still suspect there only to be one model in the US. It's really just too much to support multiple device configurations.

Anyone know why this is?

It is for to stop the people in People's Republic of China from polluting themselves with democracy and freedom. It is to keep people happy in China.

Wow, thanks for your valuable insight (retard).
China has WiFi everywhere, so banning it simply to keep people "from polluting themselves with democracy and freedom" wouldn't make sense at all.
China's ban is caused by simple protectionism, they desperately wish for their own standards (in this case TD-SCDMA) to be used and not western technology and standards.

#1.6 excalpius on 07 Apr 2009 - 18:03
Shadow Dragon,

You do realize that the REASON China wants its own standard only is ALSO because it can then control (and therefore record and MONITOR) all signals to and from that system, right?

So, you are both right, but the end is the same...

Excalpius,

You do realise that ALL digital communication in the western world is monitored as well, right? So what exactly is your point?
Using western standards would make no difference at all privacy-wise.

Everyone seems to love bashing China for their lack of civil rights and privacy, but maybe people should spend more time looking at their own governments.

So one sec, is apple planning on releasing a new iphone each year or what? I'd be damn ****ed off if I had a current gen one.

Apple is well known for "Planned Obsolescence" but this is kinda ridiculous, iphone is not a $100 dollar device like the ipod.

They are, yeah.
#2.2 DomZ on 06 Apr 2009 - 22:09
They don't force you to upgrade...I'm sure there's plenty of people who still have the 1st Gen.

They don't make the older models obsolete at all, if anything they support them better than other cell phone companies. The 3.0 OS will install on the 3g AND the 1st generation iphone as well.

Other companies tend to just throw out a phone and only do basic bugfix releases. Not only that but they tend to release more than one phone a year.

Yeah, he makes a good point.

Dude, first of all, the iPod Touch is more expensive than the iPhone. Second, you noticed that they pull out just 1 line of iPhone per year (1 line per year - it's pretty much what we see in every single company in the world, not just cellphones) and you're complaining? What did you expect? An iPhone every 2 years maybe? The company has a vision that they want to show to the public, they have marketing that needs to go on and on, and they have employees who need to work. Plus, nobody forces you to have the latest-gen iPhone.

But seriously, tell me what your idea was, I'm really interested in knowing it (without sarcasm).

Yeah Imagine that.

Just as every other cellphone maker does, except, they usually release multiple new models a year.

At least you have the latest and greatest for a full year, unlike Desktops where they are outdated as soon as you walk out of the store with them.

My idea was the the first iphone should be loaded with all the missing features that were standards back in the day.

1. Make a device lacking features every other smartphone on the planet has for years now.
2. Add SOME of those features to a 2nd generation iphone
3. Add SOME MORE of those missing features (but not all) on your 3rd gen iphone
4. Keep adding **** for years to come
5....
6. Profit.

Seriously, you guys should check out what planned obsolescence is and how good apple is at it.

As for apple supporting 1st iphone, thats a joke really, they charge you for OS upgrades. Yes, 10 bucks is nothing really but why charge? Thats just greedy and lame.

All in all I really don't understand why we get bombarded with iphone news here on NeoWin. Where are the news about the HTCs and BBs and Nokias and all those other SUPERIOR smartphones out there?

Every other cellphone maker does this? Really? So you're telling me that HTC Touch Pro -> Touch Pro 2 just added some software features like apple did? How about Nokia E61(i) -> E71? Stop being fanboys and use your brain for a second. Apple is just milking people. The 1st gen Iphone could easily do all the things the upcoming 3rd gen will do at no real extra cost for apple. Its not that advanced nowadays for your device to sport 3g and mms, is it?
#2.10 Stetson on 06 Apr 2009 - 23:07
I think you're confusing the 3rd gen iPhone hardware (no details are known yet) with the v3.0 Operating System, which will be available for both previous gen phone models.
#2.11 +DrCheese on 06 Apr 2009 - 23:08
Yes, 10 bucks is nothing really but why charge? Thats just greedy and lame.

It's free for all iphones, try again.
It only costs for ipod touch users.

Then I stand corrected. And try again what? I'm not trying anything here, I don't own an iphone simply because I don't want one. I'm perfectly happy with my E71 which I wouldn't change for anything. I'm just tired of all the hype around iphone which I just cannot justify.

What? Each rendition of the iPhone so far has added new hardware features, not just software features.

Also the OS updates add the same features to each previous version of the iPhone except those that rely solely on hardware, such as MMS, and stereo bluetooth for the original iPhone - Oh and for Free.

Apple isn't a cell maker that has been doing this for decades. They are new to the game and are slowly beefing up the iPhone and adding the features that people have been wanting.

The first couple revisions of any hardware-software combo are usually far from perfect and slowly become great due to updates.

The new iPhone and iPhone OS 3.0 should be leaps and bounds above the first two if the rumours have any bit of truth to them.

The 1st gen Iphone could easily do all the things the upcoming 3rd gen will do at no real extra cost for apple. Its not that advanced nowadays for your device to sport 3g and mms, is it?

I'm afraid it is too advanced to add hardware features to a 2 year old product.

You do know 3G is a completely different chip than Edge right? And as I said above, the MMS is dependent on the newer chipset in the 3G iPhone, as is Stereo Bluetooth.

MMS needing 3G is not true one bit. My old RAZR did MMS and that was on the plain EDGE/GSM connection. As for the bluetooth, a bluetooth profile comes from the software, not the chip. If it has any bluetooth version below 2.0, consider Stereo bluetooth nonexistent in the older iPhone as it came at 2.0.

I've got an iPhone and I accept that new models will be coming along probably on a yearly basis.. doesn't bother me one iota as I'm still thrilled with the functionality / features of my current model
#2.16 excalpius on 07 Apr 2009 - 18:06
As long as it's exclusive to AT&T, I won't be getting one.
#3 leph555 on 06 Apr 2009 - 22:30
like some are saying, who is forced you to buy an iPhone? Why should you care if you do not plan on buying it?

Not many or none at all of the North American carriers have Video calling. IT needs 3G and for some reason we are way behind Asian and European mobile tech.

It would be nice if they come out with a CDMA model, i know MANY people would be please
#6.1 Shunik Jan on 07 Apr 2009 - 02:59
They asked Verizon wayyy back if they wanted the iPhone and they clearly rejected it (stupid Verizon )so thats why they went with AT&T.
#7 AUSSIE_FLOYD_FAN on 07 Apr 2009 - 05:39

Hopefully this will drive down the price of the original iPhone.

Oh, the day when I can pick one for $50!
#8.1 Airlink on 07 Apr 2009 - 09:34
That day will never come. Apple products are always overpriced.

If G4s can sell for less than $100, then someday an iphone can cost $50(just probably not in the near future).

Ah this doesn't bother me. Running 3.0 on my 3G iPhone, and i love it.

If you want to take decent photos with your phone, get a actual digital camera, or want to video chat, get a webcam for your PC.
