Gmail is 5 years old today

It's hard to believe but five years ago Gmail was launched and changed how we view email storage forever. If you recall when Gmail was made semi-public it shattered the email storage capacity for any available free service. Storage was measured in gigs and you seemingly could store unlimited amounts of emails.

The Gmail launch also started a frenzy of trying to acquire an invite to the service. It was a clever but very effective technique by Google to give out invites to users who would then get 10 more invites and so on which caused people to start selling them on Ebay.

It's been a good tenure so far for Gmail and the email service has experienced a wide adoption rate and rave reviews. Hopefully the next five years will bring more innovation and new features that will bring new ideas to the email front.

Five years, and still beta
#2.1 XeonBuilder on 06 Apr 2009 - 13:58
+1 lol.. He said beta..
#2.2 IceBreakerG on 06 Apr 2009 - 14:14
The "Beta" tag is their "Get Out of Jail Free" card. So when it messes up, they'll just point it out and say, "Hey, it's a Beta, what did you expect?"
#2.3 Airlink on 06 Apr 2009 - 14:21
If you don't like the Beta, you're entitled to a full refund. Your $0.00 will be emailed to you in the form of worthless electrons. Thank you for using their free service.
#2.4 kiddingguy on 06 Apr 2009 - 14:46
was thinking the exact same thing

It's a valid point. 5 years for any app or service to still be in beta is unusual but I guess it's easy being a wise guy, right?

Actually, it's easier to be a stupid guy. Being a wise guy requires some effort. Being a stupid guy requires no effort.

Now look sad and say "Duh?"

Hasn't come close to changing how we viewed e-mail storage. Except maybe the amount of spam!
I use the very basic setup for the overloaded site. No chat, no crap.

It's not a bad web mail, but far from the best!

LOL if it wasn't for gmail....yahoo and hotmail would still only be 25meg which is exactly what they were until gmail came out with gigs of space which kept getting bigger as you watched.

If its not the best what is ?
#4.2 flash_flicker on 06 Apr 2009 - 14:57
"far from the best"

just curious then - what is the best in your opinion?
#4.3 excalpius on 06 Apr 2009 - 15:13
I'm happy with gmail as an aggregator mailbox for outlook (spam filtering, autoarchiving, etc). It rules in that capacity.

But as a mail CLIENT, those non intuitive labels, 1980's interface, etc. still suck as badly today as they did when they were introduced.
#4.4 soothsayer on 06 Apr 2009 - 16:52
That 1980s interface sure is fast though, a lot faster than the alternatives that I've used. Also, I think the labels system is a lot more useful than traditional folders.

Couldn't disagree more--I love how the labels work.

It allows me to assign multiple labels so that I can better categorize my email--I'm not forced to place my email into one folder.

Gmail was launched April 1, 2004 and not 6th. So it was 5 yo 5 days ago. Neowin is late as always :/
#5.1 Knad on 06 Apr 2009 - 15:08
#5.2 Manish on 06 Apr 2009 - 16:43
But they didn't present it as "5 years old today", which would mean 6th April 2004. Headline needs to be corrected. Perhaps something along the lines of "Gmail turns 5", like the blog page.
#5.3 mulligan2k on 07 Apr 2009 - 21:31
ah but did you carry the remainder?

#6.1 Faisal Islam on 06 Apr 2009 - 18:29
so what?
#7 aarste on 06 Apr 2009 - 15:12
With the Google Redesigned firefox extension, gmail is a lot nicer
#8 +dead.cell on 06 Apr 2009 - 15:15
5 years and people still bitch about it being in beta.
#9 jstillion on 06 Apr 2009 - 16:48
If it wasn't for google, both hotmail and yahoo mail were shrinking there mail box sizes and making a lot of features (such as pop/imap) paid services...

I don't understand why they haven't improved the Gmail Notifier. Here are the features I want to see in the Windows version:

* Support for Multiple accounts.
* An "X" button to close the notification display.
* To have a clickable notification display that loads the displayed eMail.
* To be ale to change the default sound.
* To have a "Compose eMail" option in the context menu.
* To have a quick/temporary "Disable Check" option in the context menu.
* Have default HTTPS options in there, rather than having to download a Registry hack.

Here is what Google have been saying for YEARS about the "upcoming" notifier but it has never furnished:

Sadly, the Mac version is better than the Widows version.
Do you guys have any other thoughts on this? What would you like to see in the new version?
#11.1 tombailey on 06 Apr 2009 - 20:22
As a funeral director I just wanted to say how pleased I am that Google have released a version especially for Widows. Even if it isn't as good as the Mac version!
#11.2 DanielZ on 06 Apr 2009 - 20:34
Yeah, the Mac version is nice. It's one of the most useful Mac apps out there.
#12 SoulEata on 07 Apr 2009 - 00:57
Considering I can't monitor multiple Gmail accounts in iGoogle yet, yes it appears to still be extremely beta.
#13 PROGAME on 07 Apr 2009 - 04:43
i remember how exciting it was to get that invite (in May)
#14 TC17 on 07 Apr 2009 - 06:21
Gmail has been by far the most reliable email account I have had over the years. Although their user interface is due for some improvements, it hasn't changed much over the years. Their spam filter is the best I have used, without me having to train it for spam.

#15 John S. on 07 Apr 2009 - 16:29
And I still get legitimate emails for folks who don't use the dot with the same email address.
