Next gen iPhone / Touch to have 802.11n and FM radio

As reported by AppleInsider, the next generation of iPhone and iPod Touch, rumored to be released in June or July, roughly the same date as the iPhone firmware 3.0 releases, will include many new enhancements over previous iPhones.

The next generation iPhone and iPod Touch are rumored to support wireless 802.11n, previously only supports 5Ghz 802.11a and 2.4 802.11b/g networks. The upgrade will allow low-power 802.11n networks to be utilized for speed, where all MacBook's currently support 802.11n.

The next generation iPhone and iPod Touch are also rumored to support FM radio signals, to both receive and transmit capabilities. This nice addition to the next generation models will allow consumers to listen to local radio stations directly from their devices and transmit signals to their car radio through the speakers.

No mention if the FM transmitter will be an internal or external device, but the nice addition to the next gen device will hopefully be an internal addition without the need to purchase addition hardware.

This is Apple we talking about, it going to be external and ridiculous in price.

And turn its battery life to, um, 30 minutes?! eek!

Apple likes external things? I belive they like simple things, so that means no major stuff sticking out of the ipods ass (dock connecter)

This isn't news. The current iphone's chip can already pick up FM radio signals, Apple just choose not to use it.

so I somehow doubt they will activate it for the new one

im starting to wonder, if the device is already in the phone, maybe there wont be a new hardware update this year but more of a feature unlock....same with the ipod touch that will get bluetooth capabilities
#2.2 Marshalus on 06 Apr 2009 - 15:27
I'd be pretty happy if they did that. I don't listen to a lot of radio but sometimes when I'm at sporting events it'd be nice to tune into with my phone.
#2.3 ahhell on 06 Apr 2009 - 15:32
They'll enable it for an additional charge, of course.

It can't be done unless Apple included an FM antenna on the existing PCB design. You can't use a single antenna for both WLAN and FM signals. If you look at the BCM4325G datasheet, you'll see that it requires 3 antennas for full functionality.

Most phones/portable FM radios use the headphone cable as an antenna, the one on my N95 does.
Since I've got an iphone, I just use the wunder radio app for radio.

You still need to match impedances, put filters in place, make the actual connection to the headphone cable, etc. There is no evidence that Apple has any of this in place.

The Nokia N800 internet tablet doesn't officially have an FM radio, yet, a program could easily be enabled for it. I doubt they would have spent the extra money to put all the parts in place when it wasn't even advertised as having one. So probably same goes for Apple...

802.11n is practically useless on the iPhone. G speeds are more than enough for internet usage. People aren't dumping huge files with their phone.

This is Apple we're talking about here. I doubt they will add it. It could have been in the first 2 iPhones already.

Oh I agree that Apple probably won't add it. But think of the jailbroken possibilities.

and? You expect it to work like the zune, add a feature to a product that not everyone has yet? This make sence, the iphone has matured and tis time to add such a feature where a group oif people already own it.

For me it's not about the speed, it's about having to keep a G router in place. I'd prefer it if I only had to worry about a single N router.

People should be happy with what they got. Apple should forbid jailbreaking. they wont loose custmorers because many, if not most dont jail break at all. its only those 14 year old girls who want miley crys as a background or people whoactully want to void their warenty.

3.0 was just a PREVIEW theres still pelnty to come, You might not need to jail break.

what? you don't need a G router. G devices will work on an N router perfectly fine.

Wow .... what? How terrible that people want to use their own purchases for their own purposes!

You seem to suggest you'd have to jailbreak an iPhone to change the background? Is this seriously true? If so, that's hilarious.

This quite apart from your foolish stereotyping of jailbreakers.

i don't think you've ever had a non-jailbreak and then gone to a jailbreak.

I dont see the point of jail breaking.

But N means all devices can run full-speed N on the AP. Low power means less of a battery draw for greater overall WLAN performance.

And FM if external could work on other devices so wouldn't be a 3.0 hardware feature as much as supported in other devices with the requisite software. It will likely be internal if at all.

internal, but the FM radio remote will see a refresh so it can work with past ipods

Listen to the morning news on the way to work, and then on the way home, listen to your own music, Easy

Nice, this will tie in great with those music apps that take advantage of your local radio stations.

Well, "Next gen iPhone / Touch to have 802.11n and FM radio" implies inevitability.

If you want to avoid the word, put the rumor in quotation marks (the BBC do it often). That is:

Next gen iPhone / Touch 'to have 802.11n and FM radio'

Yes in the article... doesn't do a lot of good in RSS readers that grab the titles (./fist of fury at Google Reader).

If Apple had FM/HD Radio, I might actually buy one. I am sure if FM will be present, the headphones will be the FM antenna.
