Well folks, the Apple Store has been down for a while, but has just come up in the last couple of minutes. So, what is new in the world of Apple today? Well, this time around we've got new Xserve servers to play with.

What changes do the new Xserve computers bring with them? Well, Quad-Core Nehalem processors from Intel are a definite improvement. The servers will come in two flavors, one more powerful than the other of course. The specifications and pricing are listed below:

Quad-Core XServe:
One 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor
3GB memory
160GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA drive module1
Mac OS X Server v10.5 (Unlimited-Client Edition)

This version of the Xserve will set you back $2,999.00 US.

8-Core Xserve:
Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processors
3GB memory
160GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA drive module1
Mac OS X Server v10.5 (Unlimited-Client Edition)

This version of the Xserve will cost you a measly $3,599.00 US.

The new CPU architecture promises to bring better speeds, and more importantly, improved power effiency. You can buy these machines with up to 24gb of RAM, and 3TB of storage space, to ensure you'll never be left high and dry when it comes to performance. If you wish to check these out yourself, head over to the Apple Store.

I think the Time Capsule got a 1TB option now which is new? for only 200usd more (holy...) over the 500GB version.

Also, why don't Apple call the new Xeon in their model number? everyone already doing it, since everyone else already selling them.

Nah, 1TB has been there the whole time. People are expecting a 2TB any day now.

We ran an Xserve for a file server/ftp/http/print for the graphics group at my old job. It was shared about about 12 artists. It ran 24/7 for three years before I rebooted it for "craps and giggles." Nice machine, pretty quiet and sat at almost 3% utilization for all of that time and the memory usage was flat.

They won't sell. It starts with an X, not an I. What were the marketing guys thinking!?
