If you love your gadgets and most of us do then this is a scary development for every owner of a device that requires a power source.

According to the Wall Street Journal the Electicity Grid in the United States has been penetrated by Chinese and Russian spies. The spies left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, according to current and former national-security officials.

"The Chinese have attempted to map our infrastructure, such as the electrical grid," said a senior intelligence official. "So have the Russians."

Both the Russian and Chinese governments have denied any wrongdoing but US investigators have followed electronic trails of stolen data to China and Russia. If the infiltrators decide to use their tools who knows what damage they could create.

It was only a matter of time really. I reckon this kind of stuff is everywhere, and the moment someone tries to activate a set, EVERYONE retaliates, and all grids/infrastructures go down at once - even better!

China, Russia, North Korea and parts of the middle East vs the West, Japan, Europe ... I can see it now ... call me crazy but it's due to happen sooner or later, sigh

What makes you think that Russia and China like each other?
#4.2 TheNay on 08 Apr 2009 - 18:47
Clearly anyone against the US will join together and go up against them.

China's economy is almost as dependant on ours as we are of theirs. While they may not love us, they need us just as much as we need them now. So I will do what you asked, you are crazy.

Hardly a surprise. America is doing the same thing in other countries. They all spy on each other.

Reminds me of the Mad Magazine "Spy vs. Spy". However, I am surprised that these power grids are connected to the internet and not on a separate system, if connected at all.

The information of the electric grid is mostly of public domain and you can find several information just browsing the net, so no, it is not secret at all. And the key component of the grid (power plant and nuclear plant) can be easily locate. In fact with lucky you can visit a nuclear plant in a guided tour.

ha not around here you can't.... we have armed guards everywhere... and you can't even get into a nuclear plant with out health systems checks and access granted through background checks... you cant even get to the gate with out a clearance..... this is in Pennsylvania btw... you cant even photograph certain parts of the plants with out permission or your cameras will be confiscated (the parts are usually inside the fence that you cant see from the street that you cant take pictures of)

Sounds like a scare story . Do yo ureally need to infiltrate our computer networks to know about our electric grid? Heck just watch our news . Here i nthe new york city region its like every other month they have something about the areas nuclear power plants and have pictures and everything plastered on the news.

Sounds like they are running out of actual news.

There is nothing wrong in being careful about these things. After all if what they are saying is true its a serious issue. If they have proof about softwares and backdoors left behind what is the point in acting like it did not happen ? Economics is an issue yes but that does not mean other issues can be forgotten.

Just take off the damn internet from government computers... why is hard to understand this ****?
#18.1 TheNay on 08 Apr 2009 - 18:49
I never understood why they're on the same thing, you'd think they be on their own dedicated "special" internet, but nope, guess not lol

Most of the utility companies are private organizations, not govt offices. They are linked but not fully controlled.
#19 pyehac on 08 Apr 2009 - 20:42
So, who didn't install updates on those computers?
#20 naap51stang on 09 Apr 2009 - 00:26
Heck, I thought environmentalist would love this! They have been wanting everyone to go back to the stone age for years. This would do it. Not to worry if people who's live depends on electricity...it would kill them off. These nut jobs say there is overpopulation. Kill two humans with one stone.....a win win for them.

Does anyone feel safe at all in the US? News like this come out on regular basis to scare people even more.
#24 Reb0ot on 09 Apr 2009 - 20:24
Where can i download the programs from?

Lol well it must be possible I guess, but you gotta have total control of the elec grid by hacking into the mainframe. Kinda like they do in the 24 series.

Just dont think a story like this would be sourced, by the contrary it should be kept quiet.
