The French National Assembly has shot down a bill that would have given music and movie industries an overwhelming amount of power to shut off end users internet access after a three strikes rule."Under the plan, the music and movie industries would have been empowered to analyze the downloads of individual Internet users to root out instances of piracy, and to report violations to a newly created agency. The agency was to send warning letters to violators; after the third letter, the Internet service provider would have been required to sever service. "
There was massive discontent in the entire country over the proposed legislation. The Assembly has 577 members, of those, only 36 members showed up on the day of the vote while the others boycotted the legislation. The legislation was shot down by a 21-15 vote.
While this is a victory for end user rights in France the legislation framework is not completely dead as an amended bill was going to be proposed within weeks.
Hopefully this message will go out to all foreign governments that this type of big brother act is not acceptable and that users of the internet in the free world will not stand up to such violations of privacy.

Espically in this day and age of a world climate, you cannot justify £40-£50 for computer games etc.
I agree with barteh. When it comes to software Microsft charges around £500 for some version of Windows in this country.
i had no problem paying 50 for games until the quality of games started dropping rapidly
ill only pay for games as high quality as blizzard games, and ons that will last
ive bought many games that just DIED, Age of conan, hellgate, UT3, eetc etc

A lot of software does not even break even, many games are in this category. I can point out a few instances of greed (like COD4 still $50 is ridiculous) but most software is priced accordingly. But of course when you steal it because you think it is too expensive, who is the greedy one then?
Yes but you have to take into consideration the popularity of the game. COD4 is still one of the most popular games out there being played today. Why would they lower the cost when people are still buying it at full price? If people stopped buying it then the price would go down.

Who the hell are you to say how much is a justifiable amount to charge? Do you have any clue as to what it takes to get that game into your hands? For a big title, there's months of concept work and often a year or more of development and testing. Then there's marketing and advertising. Pressing that game onto a DVD isn't free, and nor is the cost of shipping it to your local retailer. The developer and publisher must recoup their costs and hopefully make a profit, so they have to charge a certain amount for the game when it is sold to the retailer. On top of that, the retailer marks the game up so that it can stay afloat and make a profit.
All of this costs a lot of money, and I don't know about you, but I don't code forty hours a week for the good of humanity. I have to pay my bills. Game companies, a.k.a. "greedy management companies" have to pay their employees and bills as well.

My heart bleeds for you. It doesn't for the excessive millions these companies make.
And I believe it was Valve who recently produced evidence to show that a reduction in sale price leads to an exponential increase in sales figures... up to 600% in some cases. Go figure.

Exactly. If companies weren't that greedy, piracy wouldn't be as big as it is now.
Great job on shooting that retarded law down. Vive la France!
these dumbasses didn't show up for the vote thinking others would and be enough for the law to pass, guess again 'tards !
No doubt. ****ing lazy fat cat politicians.
I may reconsider retiring to France in the distant future
As if someone bought a car and get caught for speeding, he who got caught has is car remove from him but he also stop paying for it, making car dealer quite angry after a while.

the ******* thought of that, the law explicitely said that the users had to pay the rest of their contract even if they were shut off

Ah well. A world of privacy and piracy is better than a world with neither I guess.
The Truth ?
- This law opens the pandora box of filtering the whole french internet.
- This law treats you as a potential criminal unless you install ( and pay the tied subscription ) a software/spyware tht will report to the gouvernment everything you do on teh internet...
I'm french and I don't want a law that almost put my country to the level of China.
im going for 2 mbps
The reason why they didn't come in wasn't to show their stance against it: they simply surrendered!
