Apple's iTunes is about to cross the next big milestone by reaching 1 billion (1,000,000,000) app downloads worldwide. The iTunes appstore will be the second in Apple's history to cross the 1 billion download mark, which offers a wide variety of applications to do just about anything on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Apple is celebrating this event by offering a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. Anyone can enter the competition without purchase here, along with the official rules found here.

This isn't the first time Apple has crossed the 1 billion mark, where it had surpassed 1 billion songs back in February 2006, and since then has almost sold and downloaded 7 billion songs. iTunes, which offers more than 10 million songs worldwide, sold more than 200 million television episodes and sold more than 2 million full-length feature films. The store shows no sign of slowing down, but with recent rivals like Amazon sneaking up, iTunes could see fewer served in the future to come.

Entered via the non-purchase method as well as purchasing. (bought an app earlier today)

Likelihood of me winning is dismal I know, but it's better than nothing, and the idea of a $10,000 iTunes gift card is very appealing.

The winner is the entry closest to after the 999,999,999th download, so entering beforehand will only put you in the second-chance drawing if there is one.

That along with a $2,000 + MBP that only a few can afford. I can see apple fans being very very angry right now.

Why? Apple didn't exactly have to offer anything as a giveaway... I don't see why they'd be angry :| Unless I'm missing something here.
