Could this be the Zune HD?

Well what do we have here? Engadget appears to have stumbled upon something quite interesting. First, think back to a couple of Neowin articles recently, stating that new Zune hardware is coming and that it'll be going international. Now take a look at the image below:

This is what Engadget thinks is the upcoming Zune; the 'Zune HD'. The images appear to be promotional ones, and Engadget has also stated that after talking with sources, these are in fact real, and will be used to an upcoming Zune product from Microsoft. There's no official word on specifications yet, but no doubt expect to see speculation about it now that these have been found. And remember: there's still a chance these could be an elaborate hoax, but all evidence is pointing towards the opposite.

looks like a square version of the iPod Touch/iPhone, and it's not like it can pack much HD unless it has a hard drive (or hefty sized flash storage, like 64gb, which also comes quite pricey).
#7.1 ahhell on 11 Apr 2009 - 15:39
PROTIP: Squares have equal length sides, rectangles do not.
PROTIP 2: Most Zunes have hard drives.

The zune can output to a TV so it's likely to support HD resolutions.

Oh God. Another "they copied iPhone" post. Seriously, how can any phone/PMP that is based mainly around a touch screen look vastly different from other touch screen devices the same size???? There's not exactly a lot of room to change things! Common sense...please.

Actually, i think it is just a plain old rectangle. Square is something entirely different. Unless you mean its "square" in a 1950's slang sense of the word.

square in the sense that they just killed the rounded corners and back plate.
c'mon guys! don't play fool with me!

btw, I know that most Zunes pack a hard drive, but AFAIK there is no space in the iPod Touch to fit one (screen takes a lot of space, bigger battery also does), so unless they make a huge brick, I don't know how they would be able to do it.

I guess we would just need to wait and see... I'm not against the Zune nor MS, but their copycat products with lower quality software make me feel a chill on my spine.
#8 TheNGTV on 11 Apr 2009 - 15:53
You mean a proper aspect ratio that accommodates for even better usability on the vertical axis and plays my widescreen stuff nicely?

None of the iP___s (i****? :p) have a decent 16:9 screen yet. If the Zune HD delivers then it's a done deal.
(4 replies) #9 Nauge on 11 Apr 2009 - 16:28
what do they mean by HD...
high definition on a portable device, i mean, whats the point.
#9.1 carmatic on 11 Apr 2009 - 16:34

#9.2 PureLegend on 11 Apr 2009 - 16:56
It might just be a marketing gimmick referring to the higher definition screen.
#9.3 zivan56 on 11 Apr 2009 - 20:02
The previous Zunes had a TV encoder chip that could do 720p/1080i...it is the Focus FS456 video encoder. Decoding on such a device, even though the i.MX31 platform is pretty powerful for an MP3 player, is much more CPU intensive with a hardware based encoder.

PureLegend said,

The term HD itself is a marketing gimmick. In the early, early days I even saw 480p marketed as HD. The term itself has no real meaning.

Even if we assume HD = 1080p it still has no real meaning because DPI is more important. If you wanted an image on a 4 inch screen to look the same as a 60 inch 1080p, then you only need to match it's DPI, not it's actual resolution.

Reality?
#14.4 andrewbares on 12 Apr 2009 - 17:55
Yes, reality. How do you know anything about any product, except through the media? Or if you work there, but I doubt that. The general public has no way of knowing about the next Zune except through what the media tells us. The media could report on some good points on it, or they could report on negative points, as they did with Vista.

Look at sales for MP3 players, they've been on the decline for 2 years now. Why do you think Apple's putting the focus on their iPhone, MP3 players are a dying breed, people want things that do more than just music/video.

Hey now, we don't have a release date yet, I'm sure you have a couple of months of being "on top". Depends a bit on the price too.

I got the zune because I didn't think a new one will be release until the end of the year but now that I see the new one. I can't keep my old crap zune. Microsoft you let me down. I will now have to get an iphone instead. Wait, I already have one but got the Zune because of the storage. I hope I can get a good price on ebay then for my Zune.

Yeah, annoying thing about tech purchases is that they move on so quickly.

But, I'm not really sure how they let you down though - we know almost nothing about the Zune HD except how it looks. No release date, no specs, no price. Your current Zune is hardly trash just because an update has been announced - besides, you'll still get major software updates.

Now there is a shadowy silhouette of the zune, which I could have sworn wasnt there yesterday.
