New Leopard 10.5.7 build released, public release imminent?

Apple has released another build of the upcoming 10.5.7 operating system, which builds on the existing Leopard iteration, to developers and many people are whispering that a release is coming very, very soon. The news comes from AppleInsider, who states that developers have been getting weekly betas for nearly two months, the most recent of which being late Tuesday. There are a few signs that the release is coming soon, one of which being extremely frequent builds that only fix one or two issues at a time. This is a sign they're just hunting and killing minor bugs as they find them, and that development is closing up.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 brings with it 108 documented code corrections, and is currently in it's seventh week of testing. It will bring with it updates to 20 of the core OS X components, such as iCal, MobileMe syncing, networking and Time Machine, as well as bringing an updated speech dictionary. There has been another indication that it is arriving soon, and that is that iMacs equipped with ATI Radeon HD 4850 are shipping very shortly, or in some cases have begun shipping. It was thought that these graphics card required the 10.5.7 update, but as AppleInsider mentioned, this isn't exactly confirmed.

The update is expected to hit around 443 megabytes, and it will be a delta one meaning there will be no operating system reinstall needed. There's no official release date yet, but if you've read the article, you should expect one very soon.

I guess following Apple Mac OS betas aren't as fun as their Windows counter parts as this is the first I tihnk I'm hearing of 10.5.7... Interesting.

I think it's also because the focus on Neowin is Windows, despite posting more notable news for other hardware too.

What a x.x.X release is is essentially a series of patches. Instead of getting 10 updates or so once a month, we get 30 or so in one mega update, every 2 or 3 months. Smaller download size, less reboots, more quality control.

In all honesty, a few bug fixes doesn't excite most people.

It would be nice to see drivers for GTX 260 cards for us Hackintosh users. Most likely not in this release though. Snow Leopard already supports 'em so maybe 10.5.8 will too?

I think this is going to improve Mac OS X Leopard and its performance. Hopefully they will fix the issue with Safari 4, because I want to be able to install it. Still excited and waiting for it to come out.

The issue about Safari 4 will probably be fixed with another beta release of it. Apple did something with that IIRC with safari 3 on Tiger

And btw, does any users with 8600M GT still notice the 3d Dock not smooth like tiger or 2d version, like on newer machines with 9600m gt? i used some on a store and didn't noticed anything... (maybe it was using 9400m? forgot to notice that). it's the only thing i still don't like on leopard

No sub OS X update have required a system reinstall.

Delta updates are only applicable to systems with the previous update. Combo updates are applicable to all systems, regardless of their OS X build.

when i first read this i was thinking to myself its not much of an update if it requires you to reformat your computer i know that this update does not require that however if they had updates that did its not a very good update. even though i know that when snow leopard comes out that is more than likely what i am going to have to do. Then again i am new to the Mac scene so im just thinking out loud

Snow Leopard is a new and different OS which means it does need to replace your current OS, its not an update, more an upgrade. You never need to format your drive though, the new OS will update the computer but keep all your settings, applications and documents. Some 3rd party apps may need updating to work with the new OS though.
