Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100

Tom Warren   on 23 April 2009 - 06:59 · 106 comments & 121556 views

Advertisement (Why?)
Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build.

7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release.

Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th.

According to reports, 7115.0.winmain.090421-1650 is the latest build internally at the time of writing.

Personally I LOVE Windows 7 ... but I also love MacOS. I think this is Microsoft's re-entry into respect from the masses. Windows Vista, as much as I thought was a 'good' OS, didn't go down well with audiences worldwide ... for good reason. Windows 7 is a solid OS even at early beta stage and I've been using it as my main OS with not one SINGLE crash since it came out.

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm a Macbook user at home, but I make my living off Windows. My media center system is running Win 7, as well as my work computer (yeah, it's good enough/I'm crazy enough to put it on my work machine). I absolutely love it. It's an incredibly solid and fast OS. If I were MS I'd just stop with the Vista ads and start hyping 7.

Vista ads? All the MS ads I've seen lately are for PCs in general. Or Windows Live, which is available for every Windows PC running XP or later.

Yeah, that's true. They haven't had so many Vista ads anymore now that the whole Mojave campaign is over.

#4.1 Faisal Islam on 23 Apr 2009 - 12:08
NO WAY!
#4.2 Betaz on 23 Apr 2009 - 12:10
Even if 7 is going to have a new UI. It won't be in the RC. Even if they don't release any public builds with the new UI, they'll at least have it in many builds for testing internally, and at this point we've seen builds that are just a few builds away from RC, and everything looks the same. I'm not at all convinced that there will be any new UI though. It just doesn't even make sense at this point.
#4.3 Frank Fontaine on 23 Apr 2009 - 15:30
It will be in the RC if present at all, or in a later released build, they wouldn't release an OS with a totally new UI with no, or very little testing.
#4.4 excalpius on 23 Apr 2009 - 16:55
People keep confusing the term UI with Theme.

So how come it's not being released until 2010 ?

i don't know much about beta but if it's RC now, it should reach RC 2 soon and then it's ready for release?
#5.1 +kpo6969 on 23 Apr 2009 - 07:48
1 beta (7000)
1 RC (7xx
RTM

Release date of RTM is just speculation atm.
#5.2 Faisal Islam on 23 Apr 2009 - 12:09
Yeah....maybe January 2010
#5.3 excalpius on 23 Apr 2009 - 16:57
It's not. Some moron keeps parroting the Vista release schedule, changing the years to now. He's wrong in every way.

RC - End of April, aka NOW
RTM - End of July
on store shelves from major OEMs - September

everything selling and supported in time for Christmas

All rumors.

The best official release date we have is, believe it or not, January 2010. Straight from Microsoft. "Three years from Vista's general availability."

Your slighty wrong, you haven't taken in to account Microsoft have hit problems and are considering a 2nd RC to address bugs, etc.

#5.6 excalpius on 23 Apr 2009 - 23:13
@waruikoohii, before you claim I am de facto wrong, you might want to see what actually happens.

@thealexweb, "Considering" is the active word here. If there is a showstopper bug (most likely with WMP12 right now), it will push RTM to August...that's all.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the RC as I've been stuck with the initial 7000 build all this time.

Yes, thats very good . Hope it is great indeed, put it on most of my stuff.

Remember though, cannot give sooo much credit to them, they are building off vista, which is much more adopted now (if I use it NOW compared to 3 months after it was released (personally stuck with xp even after the betas of vista) it 'is' pretty good...with all the updates and 1gb+ ram). Yes, the updates. Plethora of them, + drivers that are 'compatible' now. We were working with beta and experimental stuff after rtm. Poor preparation (Manufactueres fault), although poor presentation (M$ fault).

7 is the good vista now, but a lot better, yes indeed. I remember reading they wanted [Longhorn] to be a big jump, and lay the groundworks. I think thats what they did. 7 is now building off it very well. So it I feel all worked out and it will benefit them even more.

I'm surprise people are still saying 5th of May for it's release when an online chat between a technet user and a microsoft rep states 15th of May which I believe more as this is a Friday and is also then end of their TechEd event and they almost always release major products at key events and as far as I know they don't have any key events around the 5th of May.

This confuses me too.

If the 5th of May is going to be the public release of the RC, then I just don't understand the significance of the 15th of May.
#12.2 epple on 23 Apr 2009 - 12:49
AFAIK, May 5th is the release on Technet and MSDN and on May 15th it will be released to public.

This is what i have been saying also. It states that all tech ed attendees will get windows 7 RC at the event. They will get it via technet.

So I am guessing that may 15 will be the technet and msdn release date and the public will be out later.

Same here. After coming from sleep or hibernation i get BSOD.
#18.2 х.iso on 23 Apr 2009 - 16:00
I also have similar trouble with my toshiba tecra m7. It just tend to freeze after waking from sleep/hibernate mode, but not every time. It happens randomly and sometimes it stuck even before showing logon screen, but most times when I already logon to desktop.
However problem reduced after upgrading to 7077, but maybe the whole trouble is because of upgrading from vista at the beginning, I didn't tried to install from scratch.

Power management is easily the biggest weakness I've experienced with the beta as well.

If they are going to do some UI changes we will see it in this RC build, otherwise it was just another rumor. I hope i see a fix to correctly detect processor speed for i7 Intel CPUs. Also i am hoping they reworked Start Menu a bit. Shut Down button is ridicilous and out of place. WMP12 felt incompleted in 7077 build, so it needs a work too.
#23.1 excalpius on 23 Apr 2009 - 17:00
WMP12 is actually the big internal problemo. It's behind schedule, but I don't think it will affect the RTM schedule they are on internally. But if RTM slips past July, it will VERY likely be due to WMP12.
#23.2 rm20010 on 23 Apr 2009 - 18:27
What's wrong with WMP12? The only real problem is the ugly Now Playing playlist header, and the 'second' floating window occasionally appearing before the parent Now Playing window (the second floating window houses the transport controls).
#23.3 excalpius on 23 Apr 2009 - 23:15
There are some under the hood problems that haven't gotten a lot of press, but a few people here have noticed some of them. I personally don't think it will force an RC2 though as it is just one application and they are really on it right now.

According to all of my info and the courseware for Windows 7 is due out in August. (For Certifications) I would think that MS will have 7 out in time for the Back to school and Holiday Shopping Seasons. The RC should be out on May 5th and the MSDN and Technet communities should have it a few days early. I cant wait for this to come out. I have been testing it for a long time now and it is an amazing OS.

We will see how good MS will make Windows 7 RC. Between RC and RTM we might not even notice changes lol. I guess possible new set of Icons and Sound Scheme could be left for RTM build. I also believe that Office 2010 and Windows 7 Final UI will blend together nicely. Ribbons might show up in Windows Explorer as well, just speculation.

The current retarded pseudo-toolbar in Explorer is (almost) completely useless, and you can't even customise it to fix that.

I would be EXTREMELY happy if they used a ribbon interface in explorer.
(1 reply) #36 ccoltmanm on 24 Apr 2009 - 01:00
I would like to see "ribbons" integrated into Windows more.

It already is in Calculator, Wordpad/Notepad; I can easily see it in Windows Movie Maker, as well as Explorer.

I can't see it in Internet Explorer though, too big.
#36.1 +Brandon Live on 24 Apr 2009 - 02:11
There isn't a ribbon in Calculator, nor one in Notepad. You were probably thinking of Wordpad and Paint.

Windows Live Movie Maker (early beta) already has a ribbon.

Don't be expecting any significant UI changes in Win7 at this point. RC means "basically done."
#37 The Grasshopper on 24 Apr 2009 - 04:03
I tested the first RC build 7000 and I used it everyday, all the time. I didn't have time to keep changing my build, but 7 is by far the best OS to date.I don't need anymore testing as i think they should release this thing by June or July at the latest. MS Marketing will probably want it released "back to school" or at christmas time. but imho this thing is done. Last night i decided to put my laptop back to vista, eagerly awaiting 7. I will be upgrading from my vista, it doesn't matter if you do an upgrade or a clean install they both turn out the same; AWESOME!.
Here's to the waiting game...
