Yahoo! quietly stop all new registrations today for new customers on the free web hosting service, GeoCities. The service which opened in 1994, lasting almost 15 years, the company as decided to shut down all new registrations, where current accounts will be deactivated later in the year.

Current accounts maybe pushed to purchase a hosting plan later in the future to continue to keep their account. Yahoo! posted this on their web site about why they are not accepting new customers:
"We have decided to discontinue the process of allowing new customers to sign up for GeoCities accounts as we focus on helping our customers explore and build new relationships online in other ways. We will be closing GeoCities later this year."

Because most of the kids can do HTML with their eyes shut. Hell, my friend's nephew is 11 and blazing through PHP...

I don't even know PHP! D:

This brings back memories for me. We had assignments to do for college and loads of us went with 3 free hosts for the webspace; Geocities, Angelfire and Xoom. I love thinking back to just how fun being online was back in 1997/98 and realise just how repetitive it has become. Didn't think I was bored with the Internet, but it appears I am.

RIP Geocities.

Hell yeah, 15 years of 12 year olds making crappy websites. I do think they should keep the ones already created up, though. Some Geocities websites were actually decent, and a lot of really old ones are kind of a "time machine" back into the old days of the internet.
#9.1 Dustin B on 24 Apr 2009 - 13:22
The "time machine" is located at http://web.archive.org/. Some Wikipedia links even point to the archive's listing of a certain URL's renditions. Of course, the MIDIs and stuff might not be there...

Man!
My site is STILL partially on Geocities, or, what's left of it anyway. Not nearly like it used to be with 42 pages. Now, I think I have 4 very plain pages left. Site has been there since 1997.

Have to believe Yahoo themselves is the main reason they're closing it, due to lack of new registrations. That stupid full length ad they have going along the right hand side of everyones web site, that won't go away unless you click an external link, is probably what killed them.

If you used your own web building app and uploaded it to Geocities, you could make a decent web site, but not with Geocities web pge builder.

my god, I still have my first website on there! www.geocities.com/tnn014
It hasn't been updated since 2001! and it's still there omg! bring back memories of the days of Macromedia Flash 4! LOL at all the grammars...I was in middle school back then ...I better back up soon.
#12 pyehac on 24 Apr 2009 - 07:49
man, I have a lot of fun with geocities

I thought I was the coolest 7th grader with my very own website.
#13 sujmano on 24 Apr 2009 - 07:54

#14 Glendi on 24 Apr 2009 - 08:01
Same, first site on Geocities.
#15 Shaun_ on 24 Apr 2009 - 09:43
They were still up? I thought they were closed off a long time ago.
#16 DomZ on 24 Apr 2009 - 11:07
I can't remember where my first site was hosted. But I definately used geocities at some point. Anyone remember homestead? I have a feeling that might have been my first.
#17 jren207 on 24 Apr 2009 - 12:02
Ah good old geocities.
I remember first using it at the beginning of secondary school, we'd all be building these pointless websites, using the PageBuilder .
#18 Dustin B on 24 Apr 2009 - 13:27
I remember Angelfire most fondly. It's probably because I couldn't stand the colours of GeoCities, and the name "Angelfire" just sounded cool, not to mention that's the first one I used to even start learning HTML...before I figured out that I could do it on my own at home a couple of years later when I started to create AutoRun files that opened HTML documentation on CD-ROMs because I saw some games that did the same.
#19 babyHacker on 24 Apr 2009 - 15:02
I jumped from Geocities to Xoom (which offered I think 5mb or webspace when geocities offered 2MB). This was in the late 90s. I then moved to my own domain and host after that.

i knew Tripod will win in the end
#22 AnalogRival on 24 Apr 2009 - 17:04
Geocities was my first web space as well! I was buried somewhere deep in SiliconValley back then.

I later discovered hypermart and loved it because it supported FrontPage (which I've long since abandoned) and I was a lovely little sub-domain. Was nice not taking 10 minutes to type my URL, lol.

It's a sad day for many of us
#23 Firecat on 24 Apr 2009 - 22:59
Talk about internet nostalgia... These were the services I used back in the good ol' days:

T35
angelfire
freewebz
geocities
xoom
tripod
virtualave

Used it ages ago, suprised they're killing it off. Sounds as though they're just trying to push people on to their paid hosting not someone I'd choose to spend money on.
