Microsoft yesterday unveiled a new software+services application to beta testers in Seattle, Washington.

The software is a desktop client for Windows which allows you to post information to it via e-mail or SMS. The application gathers local news from 20,000 sources and displays it on a map. Like Twitter it allows you to post short updates named alerts. Vine will also integrate with Facebook and the short messaging service, Twitter, at a later date.

Microsoft's main emphasis for the application is marketing it to emergency management officials, who could use the new tool to broadcast and receive information during a disaster or other major event. According to The Seattle Times, Seattle is the first place Vine will be publicly available. The software giant plans to open the test up to other locations at a later date.

More information on Vine and how to sign up to the beta is available at the newly launched Vine site

What's Facebook? Some kind of picture gallery?

The application seems kind of cool though. I doubt I'll ever use it though.

You should be banned for web-ignorance.

Why take 2 seconds to click on the link the author graciously included in the write up when you can take even longer to post the quesiton and wait around for someone to answer?

Are you kidding? I feel sorry for you if you're not.

The link just sends me to a sign up page with a picture of arrows bouncing from continent to continent like some kind of nuclear warfare scenario or a map of airline routes.

looks interesting...

Mhmm, nice. Not sure how useful it will be, but definitely worth a try once it comes out.

Whoa. People are crazy.

When ABC company releases a new product, people would say "having alternatives is good". When Microsoft releases a new product, people would say "this company is living in his own world".

What is going on?

It's just blind, uneducated bias. I'm sure the release of Windows 7 means Microsoft is living in some sort of fantasy world too but everyone's entitled to their opinion I guess.

With that I mean, they come up with every idea, that's been there for sometime...

seems interesting. you gotta hand it to microsoft; they are not sticking all their eggs in one basket and are trying new things more and more.

Seems interesting, and looks interesting. So it's some kind of location-based information aggregator? Wow.

I don't like how the user display picture is perched on what should be the title bar. It goes against the user interface guidelines that Microsoft has set for Windows.

It matches the way the Vista and 7 start menu display the user pic.

#9.1 GP007 on 28 Apr 2009 - 14:51
So don't use it?

Since we don't all have time to read the *whole* thing, I will just post a little snippet...

Yup, sounds just like MySpace.

Oh wait.

Oops, a double-post?! How'd that happen? >

Twitter, Vine, Myspace, Facebook, Bebo, Habbo, OkCupid, Wasabi, Tribe, MyLOL, Vox, Tumblr, LiveJournal, Tagged, lifeknot, SocialVibe, Plurk, kaioo, LinkedIn, Pingsta, Meetup, Meetin......

Yes we need more places to blab nonsense to each other....

I agree with you, I'm just saying that Vine doesn't seem to have the same target market as a typical social networking site.

And in answer to your question, none. They're all variations of MySpace and they all serve the same purpose: To give false hope that other people care enough what you had for breakfast that it's worth publishing on the Internet.

Errr. Pick one that has all your friends colleagues on it?

Otherwise, just stay out of it and leave it alone?

Not all of us have unlimited minutes on our phone with unlimited long distance. Just a hint.

Wow, I really love this approach of social applications. No more "Here's my life, comment it please" cr**, but instead we get something more selective and organized around people you actually care about what they're doing. Love this and looking forward to the beta.
#11 Marc Podito on 28 Apr 2009 - 23:12
Will these kind of applications bring a more dangerous working environment since it reveals where you actually at? Privacy concerns perhaps?
#12 LiquidSolstice on 29 Apr 2009 - 00:53
This might be interesting, but I'm curious as to how it will play out with the whole Location awareness thing in Win7.

Great that it is integrated with Facebook and Twitter. I think that makes Vine really suitable for doing businesses. I will check more later.
