Apple introducing new, cheaper Macs very shortly?

What have we got here? A delicious Apple rumor, of which could actually be true, taking into account the current economy. As AppleInsider is reporting, various sources have informed the technology world that Apple is gearing up to release "more affordable versions of both the 13-inch MacBook and iMac, according to people who've proven extremely reliable in predicting Apple's future business directions."

So, what's the deal with the price drops? In a word, netbooks. Apparently that while these miniature computers aren't threatening Apple's profits from the Mac business, they are showing the Cupertino-based company that their potential to grow in terms of OS market share is at risk, due to the cheaper nature of the netbooks.

For the 3 month period that ended in March, Mac units had contracted by 3 percent, which is the first time in 6 years that the shipment of their computers has reversed in growth direction. AppleInsider says that, "the company plans to institute changes that will rekindle growth and help it better contend against a barrage of cheap netbooks, all without devaluing the customer experience that had previously driven Mac growth for 23 straight quarters."

It's expected that these price drops, whilst currently undetailed, will come into effect when the MacBook line is refreshed, which could possibly even be at the WWDC.

You agree he's not going to buy a Mac? I'd agree he isn't either.

If they get a Mac Book down into the sub $499 price range I might consider picking one up to better learn the system.

13 inch is only 3 inches more than a 400$ netbook's screen. I'm sorry, but still no.

Knowing apple this cheaper mac will be $800.

Cheaper meaning what ? Cheaper in apples terms or everybody elses terms?
#2.1 ir0nw0lf on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:01
Hehe, I was thinking the exact same dollar figure for some reason...
#2.2 Pam14160 on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:02
That's a conservative guess.
#2.3 Beastage on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:06
Meaning it going to be cheaper than the other macs... and will have pathetic specs.
#2.4 PsykX on 30 Apr 2009 - 22:02
Of course it means 800. Because otherwise they'd have to do some serious sacrifice on design, features and power.

800 is still cheaper for an iMac.

But I still don't believe this news though. I should read it carefully when I get time. I just based myself on the headline, but I admit it.

Cheap in the Apple's eyes means cheap parts like 512MB of RAM, 2-3 year old CPUs and integrated GPUs.

And that is different from the current iMacs how?
#2.7 mmck on 30 Apr 2009 - 23:58
Nothing will be "cheaper", rather lower spec. It will just be a lower end Apple which is still overpriced in comparison.
#2.8 Jaron on 01 May 2009 - 03:44
$795

You've never taken a look at iMacs' specs, did you?

Sure have. It's a laptop-on-a-stand. Nothing more. But thankfully it sure is purdy.

exactly what i was thinking. also no denying they are affected by the laptop hunters ad. but even with those specs, will they compete with price and of course specs? people are more getting aware of computer specs these days.

agreed. it looks so good with my home decor.
#3 +thefarewellnote on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:01
I find this hard to believe - if anything I think they will introduce a low end iMac for 899 like the 20 inch educational iMac.

this was speculated a few times before and apple discounted it

Companies deny all rumors, all the time. They insist there's absolutely no plan to do whatever the rumor says they're going to do, and that it simply will not happen any time soon. Please continue buying our products normally, nothing to see here, move along.

And then the rumors wind up true.
#5 jamesyfx on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:01
Cheaper as in, not as expensive as the other Macs.

Which is good. At least they're rolling out more choice.
#6 Origamihl on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:02
cheaper macbook - 998$
cheaper imac - 1198$

Great news! In my opinion, their are only two defects in apple's product line:
1)High prices
2)Lack of gaming

lol rattle about price? do you believe Apple are going to offer same specs for less money? it only means less money, even less specs.
#8 fiver_ on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:04
If indeed they are priced around $800.00 & they dont cut any of the specs or software I think it would be a good deal. PC's on the other hand with W7 coming out you can get a laptop with a bigger screen, bigger HD, and probably the same cpu for the same money. I'm sticking with PC! (just wish iTunes worked faster with pc)
#9 WooHoo!!! on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:14
Surely they just lump in a low end Core 2 Duo, take away the nvidia GPU and go back to Intel, perhaps even 1GB Ram. Job done.

Please be more than just a $50 price drop...

The local outlet store was running a $500 discount on their 24" iMacs when I was looking for a new laptop for my wife.

That price cut was fantastic, and she ended up getting the iMac and is very happy with it. It is sort of like an answer to Ballmer's complaint about the $500 logo.
#11 thealexweb on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:29
If they made a Mac with pretty much the same specs as a PC for around the same price I would by a Mac.
#12 Antiprophet on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:29
they will add in something that is "pro" like an extra usb port and charge the same stating that it has more features, there fore a "price cut"

i have such a love hate relationship with apple

I'm not buying an Apple netbook unless it's under $400.
#13.1 m.keeley on 30 Apr 2009 - 22:14
Well guess you won't be buying an Apple then!

Exactly

#14.1 m.keeley on 30 Apr 2009 - 22:16
But look at all the Mac users who run Bootcamp/Fusion/Parallels that's another license sale for MS.
#15 MightyJordan on 30 Apr 2009 - 21:51
Let's pray to god that the price drops are actually noticeable and end up making the Macs finally affordable. The low-end iMac needs £300 cut from the price to make it actually affordable; it's currently £950! The previous-gen model was £800!
#16 m.keeley on 30 Apr 2009 - 22:14
Assuming they do this and then specs don't suck then great. However what would they do to make a cheap iMac? Slower processor won't save that much neither would a smaller hard drive, basically Mac Mini spec, the only other thing would be a cheap case which they're dead against.

(1 reply) #17 The2 on 30 Apr 2009 - 22:24
I really don't know what's all the fuzz about Mac prices? they are better in terms of case quality and they are less affordable - nothing strange about this.
But I would say the problem is in foreign countries! You're are saying that 950£ is not cheap!? It's 1500£ in Croatia for the same laptop! Take that! And HP with the same specs is 400£ !

Well considering things like the studio xps 435 which has a 24 inch monitor , core i7 processor and 6 gig ram yes apples pcs are expensive.
#18 Dane on 30 Apr 2009 - 22:28
Hmm nice. I am buying a macbook at the end of may/early june. I think I'll have to keep a watch on this. I am not interested in a netbook though.
#19 Vakerorokero on 30 Apr 2009 - 23:13
I will get one only if they release a way to disable the digital-out from the headphone plug, got my first mac and found the tiniest little things are the things that crap out and have no way to fix.
#20 twist on 01 May 2009 - 02:46
doesn't really matter, problem isn't that macs are expensive, it's that they are expensive when compared to the pc alternative.
i'm sure for the same price as this 13" mac you will still be able to get a pc with a 15"/17" and better specs.

Microsoft hit a nerve with their latest advertisements?
#22 +Chicane-UK on 01 May 2009 - 07:41
Well lets see just how cheap Apple can go. I'll be surprised if it's anything more than 10% less than their next model up to be honest.
#23 scrimpy32 on 26 Jul 2009 - 05:33
they still need to lower prices by another $400.00 or they still fail.
