According to Paul Thurrott, a beta version of Virtual XP for Windows 7 has been released to MSDN and TechNet subscribers.

The download comes in two parts. The first is KB958559, an update for Windows 7 that includes Windows Virtual PC for Windows 7. The second, is another exe that installs the Windows XP with SP3 virtual machine itself.

To run Virtual XP Mode, users must be running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate with preferably 2GB of RAM with at least 256MB available to virtualization, and a processor that supports hardware virtualization. Many times hardware virtualization needs to be enabled in the BIOS to be functional.

The bits for the RC was released to MSDN, TechNet and Connect memebrs today. A public beta of Virtual XP for Windows 7 is expected to be released to the public May 5, the same time Windows 7 RC will be released to the public.

can anyone confirm this? what is the filename and filesize to be downloaded and what are the hash signatures of this file if anyone finds this?

Uhhh, did you even read the article? Virtual XP for Windows 7 IS Windows XP Virtual Mode. Don't know about multiple languages, but there are both 64-bit and 32-bit versions.

Instructions and Resources

Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 makes it easy to install and run many of your Windows XP productivity applications directly from a Windows 7-based PC. It utilizes virtualization technology such as Windows Virtual PC to provide a Virtual Windows XP environment for Windows 7.

Windows XP Mode provides a 32-bit Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (SP3) environment pre-loaded on a virtual hard disk.

Are the technet downloads screwed up for anybody else again?

I wonder when someone will reverse engineer this for Vista as well.

I have no idea why anyone would want to do it, since Vista and Windows 7 are basically the same OS, but...

I believe that he means he wants to run Virtual XP mode on Vista, not to run Vista in Windows 7.

This is pretty much in the "why the hell not?" category. It gives peace of mind for now, but it's clearly a future-proofing step...for Windows 8, muhahaha.
#6.4 +Xerxes on 30 Apr 2009 - 23:56
There is no need to, VMware already does what this does (but at a cost) and I'm sure the other VM solutions offer something similar as well. There is nothing ground breaking about this, it's nice to have built in but I doubt people will even bother to hack it to make it work on Vista (or even XP). That is my 2 cents, take with a grain of salt.

Does anyone know how to get apps to integrate into the Windows 7 desktop from XPM? I can't figure out how to make the XP desktop go away but the apps show on the win7 desktop.
#9.1 Soldiers33 on 30 Apr 2009 - 20:24
could you try xp compatability mode?

I'm just trying to play around with XPM. I wanted to try and get IE6 to integrate into the Windows 7 Desktop without having to bring up the XP desktop with XPM. Would be useful for me to see how my sites look and function in IE6 this way.
#9.3 dlegend on 30 Apr 2009 - 20:46
Never mind I got it working. Asked on the forums and someone provided me with a video tutorial from http://www.withinwindows.com

What you have to do is install the app inside the virtual machine. then log off inside the virtual machine and close it

Then go to start, all programs, windows virtual machine , virtual windows xp appl;ications and your app should be there.

Keep in mind all this is is virtual pc 2007 . So you have to configure xp and have it updated and with a virus scan and everything.

Not worth it at all.

For YOU, maybe. For small businesses with legacy applications, this will be an IT godsend.

Have you tried to set it up? Your basically setting up a whole new pc just for one application.

I've tried to install it, however, it's stuck on 92% configuring updated on reboot... ugh. I can't get anywhere with it.

I thought this would be different. Its not any diff then virtual pc 2007. so far all it is is a free xp virtual machine and a copy of virtual pc 2007.

What did you expect? I thought it was very clear what it is.

I didnt think it was just a virtual machine. I figured it would be seemless not setting up a virtual machine then copying over a shortcut to the start menu.

Windows Virtual PC with Windows XP Mode is alot more different than Virtual PC 2007. You can check out the comparison chart here http://<< spam >>/c2cydv . I have it installed here and it really is amazing! You can check my little review on it here http://<< spam >>/ch7njp

Funny thing, my warning level was increased, yet, my post remains!

Let's think about this: I was warned for posting "Illegal items/warez". This simply isn't true. This is a PUBLIC beta release that just hasn't been released yet? Is there a difference? Yes, there is. Go ahead, flame away!
#13.1 NightmarE D on 30 Apr 2009 - 22:42
You can't link to torrents on Neowin. Plain and simple.

Let's think about this:

Now if Microsoft had actually released a torrent for it, that would be different story and Neowin would probably allow it since it would be an official Microsoft download.

Most people would prefer the official download because it's legit and clean. With a torrent that's made by someone else, you have a very good chance of getting something that's embedded with viruses.

In other words, there's a very big difference.
#13.2 excalpius on 01 May 2009 - 01:26
You've missed the fact that it's NOT a public release until May 5th. Currently it is a private release.
#14 Andrmgic on 30 Apr 2009 - 22:52
it works fine for what it was designed for, and it comes free with every copy of windows 7 professional or higher

Also, it isn't public until microsoft puts it on their site for everyone to download. until may 5th, it is warez unless you're a MSDN/Technet subscriber.

this is 'nice' and 'cool' but I dont see the point to run an OS inside of another OS at all. Yea, virtualizatio, blah, blah, blah. But still no point. The virtualized OS run slower and the real machine use a lot more of power (of consumption too) to do that, while when you run it live, runs faster and better (and dont consume resources).
I see this like an excuse to sell a "new" and 'free' feature of 7 (pro and ultimate only) while we were running virtuallized OSes for ages with free software.

You still don't get it. Go and read the Microsoft website & other articles to find out what this is for.

I forgot to install Virtual PC 2007 on my XP MCE laptop after a reformat, and needed it the other day. I tried to find the download page on Microsoft's site, and now all links redirect to this. Are they discontinuing support for Virtual PC on every OS except one that's not even yet released for retail consumption?
#17 MistaT40 on 06 May 2009 - 03:17
Sorry I'm a little behind - does this replace that compatability mode that was present in Vista for app etc?
