Microsoft is continuing its ad campaign named "laptop hunters".Yesterday the company unveiled Sheila, hunting for a laptop that could cut video and has a big screen as Sheila is an artist. Microsoft decided to attack the fact Macbooks often come with a small amount of RAM, 2GB in the example they used. Hardened Mac fans could argue, "why not upgrade the RAM?" which is a valid point as less seems to have been made about the price point in this episode.
Either way the laptop hunter adverts have certainly triggered debate, criticism and applause from the many thousands that have watched them both here at Neowin and comments throughout various online forums.
Microsoft's latest ad campaign began with Lauren in March this year. With the "I'm a PC" ad campaign gathering pace and positive feedback for Windows 7, who knows what Microsoft has up its sleeve for Windows 7 marketing?

I also loved the Mac dis, "It only has 2 GB of RAM...(silence)" Golden.
First it was $1000, then $1500, now it's already $2000.
If they want to ride the "Apple is oh so expensive" wave, that's not a smart thing to do.

Well they're starting with the budget laptops (that Apple doesn't have) and then comparing the higher-end Windows laptops with Apple's MacBooks. The low-end ones have no competition, so that's easy... but they don't want to give the impression that a PC is only for people on tight budgets.
Yeah, I'm seriously thinking these are actually HP adverts... Someone at the marketing company just got the wrong logo...
There is nothing wrong with HP notebooks ive owned quite a few and ive never had any of them go faulty unlike most first revision Apple notebooks that have loads of issues that Apple refuse to acknowledge until the media gets involved.
Lenovo and Sony almost always come on top in the hardware price/performance over Apple, though they are a bit closer together.
All companies have lemons, unfortunately Apple's failures get 90% of the press for some reason. If anything, Apple has a lower failure rate than most other companies, but you wouldn't know it if you have no other point of reference than the media.
Actually, the ad with the mother and son bought a Sony Vaio. "I'm a PC and I'm 11"
I then replaced that Dell with an HP Pavillion dv9000 and I absolutely love the thing. Had it for about three years now and have had no problems at all.
Somehow I remembered this one posting after I saw another MS ad. And behold - they bought a Sony!
This was the ad with the mother and son.

Nice find!
+1 to this...
i wish the advertising department would do abit more research
But oh wait, it has Final Cut, iMovie, premiere, etc. available... And doesn't need as much RAM as the windows counterpart, even for video editing....
Good god Apple fanboys are the worst, did you even watch the advert she considered more than just the ram size, she looked at screen size, cpu, wether the GPU would be beneficial in accelerating the editing they can only cram so much into an advert.
There are as many good peices of editing software for a PC than their are on a Mac.

Last time ichecked a lot of the programs you listed had to be bought seperately . as in extra from the notebook.
Hello jim goldman and welcome to neowin , This might come as a shock but Adobe Premier does NOT come free with apple computers it costs $799 .
It doesn't NEED as much RAM? I highly doubt that.
I guess you missed the fact that you cut off one important word from your quote: "available".
Doesn't need as much RAM? What is this based on? Do you have benchmarks? Mac's are just as RAM hungry as PCs are these days.
However the "only has 2 GB of RAM" line wasn't a very strong one for the tech savy. RAM isn't too expensive...upgrading that to 4GB of RAM wouldn't have been THAT much money. (I mean she is already spending $2000 on a laptop).
Having the apps and not enough ram is like saying, I have the nails to build my new shelf but I have no wood.
And premier is mac only right
For $2000 she could have gotten the Macbook Pro, like she said, but it only comes with 2GB RAM. If she had got it from the Apple Store, she could have got one with 4GB for $2100.
The only thing she seemed to consider when comparing between the PC and the Mac was the RAM size. Clearly she'd never bothered looking at 'Product Reliability and After-Sale Service, 2008'
On the plus side, even if it does go wrong, at least she didn't actually pay for it.
-------------------
Looking at the ads themselves, Microsoft seem to be taking the whole thing 'way' too seriously now. Apple just end up poking fun. Mind you, Microsoft's marketing campaigns have never been overly creative.

The point of this advert is if she can buy a laptop for $2000 so going to an Apple Store would have done her no good since she didnt have $2100, but then you are looking at a really low spec machine for a high price premium, she wanted a big screen so the 15" macbook would have been useless to her.
Obviously something to consider is reliability of Notebooks but Apple products are notorious for having big issues with the first few revisions of their new stuff, cracking/discolouring plastics, faulty cpu fans, faulty graphics cards to name a few.
Im sure she considered more than just ram size, she did say in the video that she also wanted a big screen, more than 2gb of ram, she did ask if the gpu would be beneficial.
If it did go wrong just like Apple products do all she needed to do was return it to the shop, warranties are extra even Apple care, ive never had a laptop go bad on me so you are blowing the issue out of all proportion.
As for the adverts i think they are great, im a fence sitter i dont care either way which company makes the better stuff but i enjoy the Im a PC adverts and yes Microsoft does take it seriously just like a business should do, no one likes a niche computer maker with the lowest marketshare spending loads of money on marketing and all their adverts do is poke fun at vista, they dont use the adverts to highlight what OSX is and why a Mac is better its all just a childish immature game to them.
These adverts are advertising gold compared to Apples childish tactics.
Oh and also that they don't get viruses. Which means Macs are just sitting ducks but that's an argument for another thread.
You have got to be kidding.
Apple not taking this seriously and just poking fun? Riiiight. That's why they spend 100s of millions on marketing. Just for fun.
OOTB what does the Windows lappy come with to do movie editing? Errm, Windows Movie Maker? Don't make me laugh. She will have to fork out more money for a decent editing app anyway.
Just like she would have to on a Mac, you dont get prosumer level editing tools with either operating system.
No, but iMovie is a lot more capable than WMM. I have read about short films with international exposure that were edited on iMovie.
I agree but if she is a video editor im sure she has her own video tools. The big difference is if Microsoft put some decent video editing software in with Windows they would get accused of having a monopoly and being anti competitive. Apple gets away with it.
Well your forgetting a lot of open source stuff thats available for windows.
And like many have said, she probably owns or uses something else already that she knows well and likes.
what a funny argument
i say she is an actor and has no idea about movie editing software at all
let alone own one
There is just as much open source software (often the SAME software) available for OS X as well, your point?
I believe the point was that a previous poster was making the assertion that you have to pay to get decent video editing on the PC, whilst on a Mac it comes for free in the form of iMovie.
Apple eats less RAM, less CPU since it doesn't normally have antivirus, and other reasons
4GB RAM for my MBP was £30, quite cheap! I sold the original 2GB for £15.
Apple comes with video software, win doesn't
Apple has FW800, HP doesn't. Sooner or later she WILL need it.
Apple has DVI (or the new one), HP doesn't, and she will need it. Face it, laptop screens, even apple ones, are very very poor. s-IPS panel is the only way forward.
HP is made of cheap plastic, apple - aluminium (more durable, better built).
Most people don't have a clue about computers, and I can guarantee most of them end up with grave problems with win in a year and end up paying loads for new laptop or simple yet very expensive software repairs.
So where do we stand? Well she can't connect some essential peripherals. Too bad.
Apple eats less RAM, less CPU since it doesn't normally have antivirus, and other reasons
I run antivirus on my Windows PC and it only uses a few mb of memory and 0 cpu cycles until it does a scheduled scan so stop with the FUD
The point of this advert is if she could get a notebook with everything she wanted for $2000, if she bought the Macbook Pro she wouldnt have the money to upgrade the ram.
Wrong, Windows comes with Windows Movie Maker, ok its not that great but if she is a Video Editor its safe to assume she already has the pro tools she needs.
Maybe, maybe not i wouldnt say having FW800 is a reason to spend more money and get a lesser specced machine.
The HDX18 (which im guessing what she picked) has HDMI and VGA out, she could easily get a HDMI to DVI cable.
Big deal it has a 'unibody' aluminium case, as for better built i beg to differ. Just because its not aluminum doesnt mean its an inferior laptop, they have to be built with portability in mind so im sure the plastics of the HP arent gonna fall to bits when she pics it up.
Again more FUD, she knew exactly what she wanted as she pointed out in the video that she needs a faster CPU, bigger screen, more memory, she even asked wether the GPU would be beneficial, and since shes a video editor im sure she is more knowledgeable than the average joe windows user. As for software repairs that can happen on a mac as well as windows hence the 'genius' bars.
I know exactly where you stand you are completely biased towards macs, do you really think she would be stupid enough to buy a notebook that she cant connect most of her peripherals to? you assume too much. Take off the Apple rose tinted glasses.

My 20" HP HDX laptop is made out of 'cheap plastic'. It weighs 15lbs. It's built excellent, gets heavy use and has flown all over the world. I'm quite confident in HP's build quality - it doesn't need to be built out of aluminium at all, and at 15lb, if there were any issues, they would show up.
I have to say, in the Windows monopoly, using a widely industry-adopted operating system only benefits everyone (or Linu

This reasoning is getting old real fast, can't you think of a better stereotype?
Besides that if you want to do serious video editing, you really want more than 2GB, PC or Mac. In fact, the more the better.

1. Not true at all. The OSX by itself and the whole make up with graphics sucks much more ram then antivirus or any other app will in Windows.
2. Ram for PC is cheaper any way you look at it but this is really irrelevant because she gets more ram for less money.
3. Not true. Nonsense.
4. Firewire standard is history. Nobody uses Firewire anymore because USB 2.0 has much higher bandwith throughput and is faster. Don't talk about something you have no idea about.
5. Apple doesn't have DVI.. They have miniDVI which you have to pay $30 from Apple to hook it up to regular DVI machines. PCs these days have regular DVI which is compatible with 99% of displays and they also have HDMI
6. If they look nice, I don't care whether it's aluminum or not. New Dell XPS machines look sick and they are not aluminum. Plus with aluminum there's more chance of static discharge.
7. Which you are one of obviously. Windows has everything that Apple has software wise, the Windows versions of same software actually work FASTER then on OSX (Photoshop, AE and others) plus they have the ability to use advanced 64 bit instructions like Photoshop CS4 or many other apps that allow you to use much large amount of ram.
8. Apple rips consumers everywhere you look. Get miniDVI-DVI ($30), you only get 1 year of warranty, then pay them $300 to get 3 years (most PC manufacturers come with 3 year warranty standard). Upgrade the video card (card costs $180 everywhere, Apple sells the same card with lower specs for $350) etc etc.
Apple ONLY has style on their side. And that's it!
And I'm writing this on a Mac, so I am very well aware of the OSX and WIndows sides (both positives and negatives). Price and software overall are not Apple's strong suit and let's just leave it at that.
If you want to buy for style and pretty looks, go for it. That's fine. But don't around talking about superiority when there's none. You just make yourself look silly.
I've been waiting for someone to say this.
/plastic gets a bad rap in general
//always ask for plastic at the grocery store. it keeps costs down, can be used at home instead of the plastic trashbags you were going to buy anyway, and doesn't take any longer to break down than paper does at the bottom of a landfill
Plastics degrade way slower than paper - bottom of the landfill or not.
Final cut doesnt come with the Mac and she already explained if you dared to actually watch the video before forming a biased opinion, she wanted bigger screen, better cpu, more ram, than the Macbook afforded.
Errr... I did watch the video thanks, and "biased opinion"? LOL, no. I've had to use a Mac for the last year and I hate it. I own a Dell, it cost 1/4 of the price of a MacBook Pro and has a higher spec than it, so while the build quality isn't as good, it would need to break 4 times to cost as much as the Mac.
Anyway, video;
She said she wanted a big screen, yet then said "Having it be portable is superimportant", and she see's a 17" laptop and says, "if possible something a little smaller"
The MacBook Pro has the same CPU as the one she bought.
If she needed more RAM $30 on top of a $2000 purchase is nothing.

"This is probably one of the only places I would ever have actually recommended the person to get the overpriced Mac." I daresay he isn't exactly biased, or at least, doesn't sound like it. I really don't get the Apple hate. Bring on the price cuts.
Anyway, video;
Yes, and no video editing software comes with Windows either - if you dared to read my comment you would see the mention of iMovie too.

I have a friend who is a video editor for a local news station and her opinion is that Final Cut and Adobe Premiere are pretty equal. I personally edit with Adobe Premiere and I think it's really easy to use.
She did say she wanted a big screen and having it portable is important. Correct me if i'm wrong but a 17" laptop is still movable. That's why she's getting a laptop instead of a desktop.
The laptop she bought is this I believe, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1218052535616
This CPU is a quad core 2.0 GHZ. I think that's better than a dual core 2.4 GHZ processor. Of course it could be http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1218052535546 because the quad core laptop is really new. So in that case you would be correct in saying the processor is the same. However, it just proves that you can get more for $851 less. Yeah the mac does have two graphics cards but does the second one really cost $851?
Like I say, it's just my opinion, I'm sure a lot of people find premiere okay. I work as a game developer, so we use windows for almost everything *apart from* the video editing for the cutscenes where we modify the scenes in Final Cut. Premiere was one of the most frustrating applications I've had to use, countless times it would mess up while rendering out a large modified scene. That was CS3 though, CS4 could have improved.
The laptop she bought is this I believe, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1218052535616
If the Microsoft website is correct (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/choosepc/) she ended up getting this so the screen was only 16" - yes, quite portable, but the resolution on that model is 1366x768, what's the point of a big screen with a lower resolution than the smaller screen? (Plus it's only 0.6" difference)
Again, if the Microsoft link is correct it looks like she only got the 2.4GHz Dual. If she got a Quad I take back what I said

Please dare yourself to read my first comment, and the one I was replying to - I mean NEITHER come with a decent video package (e.g. Final Cut/Premiere standards) However, out of the two that DO, iMovie is better than WMM.
Seriously, I thought Apple Fanboys were bad, but MS ones appear to be even worse, I USE WINDOWS, I DON'T LIKE OSX, god forbid that I suggest that in this one case IN MY PERSONAL OPINION the Mac would have been a good option. (not directed at Omen1393, who replied a friendly manner)

except for some reason memory modules for Mac's are higher priced than PC modules.
Huh? What are you basing this on? Both use the same memory.
he's right. most manufacturers charge a premium or their Apple specific memory although it's the exact same memory.
The ads are called Laptop Hunters...
If they went the desktop route with these commercials, they'd slay Apple, as the only "desktop" worth a damn in their line for under $2500 is the iMac, and let's be honest - most desktops will destroy that thing.

for what you would spend on this MBP you get dual core only (What macbooks don't have quad core) less than 1/3 the drive space, NO BLU_RAY (sorry fanboys). If i bought the HP, i would have faster processor, bigger hard drive, BLU-RAY ( sorry fanboys...had to rub it in again and i would have enough money left over to buy Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.
don't get me wrong. i like Macs. they are a nice lil niche product. but if i wanted performance combined with value the hp is the better choice plain and simple
oh yeah!! i forgot I CAN PLAY A TON OF GAMES WITH THE HP
But I agree that the HP kicks the macbooks arse.
It's impossible to reason with fanboys

GeForce 9600M 512MB
4GB DDR2
Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 2.8Ghz
Dual 320GB 7200RPM hard drives
TV Tuner with remote, plus the laptop comes with a little remote without the tuner that fits into the express card slot, Apple seemed to have removed theirs and charge for it...
Blu-ray player with lightscribe for the DVD/CD burner aspect
Fingerprint reader
Webcam
SD/MMC/XD/MS, MS Pro reader
Express card 54 (unless they changed it, I know the 15" MBP's only have a 34 slot)
VGA and HDMI
eSATA port
Exanpsion slot (Dock connector I believe)
3 year HP warrenty with Accidental coverage (Apple doesn't even offer this, accidents do happen, shame Apple rather you pay for it)
All this I got back in Feb for a little less than $2100 with tax and shipping. Honestly, what Macbook Pro could compare to my HP HDX in terms of value for the money I spent? Not certainly the baseline 15" which wouldn't even come with the 3 year warrenty. This is also all using HP upgrades on the site, including the RAM. The only thing I missed out on if i would've waited a month or two is the new HDX have nVidia 130M cards and backlit keyboards.
And this is coming from someone who has a Macbook Pro Early 2008 model, so I'm not exactly biased, I loved my Mac, but I wanted something a bit more and this HP delivers like no Apple laptop could for the price. By the way, anyone want to buy a MacbooK Pro 15" early 2008? LOL
You haven't seen the recent I'm A PC I'm a Mac ad about the all the legal text or whatever?
Oh well... they could still find a Sharon from a housing commission area to do what I mentioned above. All it'd cost them is a fortnight's dole payment and a pack of Winnie Blues.
I am a PC, and I run Windows 7, Vista, XP, and Ubuntu all on the same box (oh yeah, and I ran Mac OSX on it...once)
Until they remedy cooling systems for laptops, sometimes smaller isn't always better if your PC gets ridiculously hot on your lap and occasionally requires it to be sent back to the manufacturer because its GPU toasted itself at 90+ degrees Celsius.

As others have said Final Cut Pro is the industry standard for editing and it only runs on a Mac. With professionals it's not really as much about the money but about getting quality gear. In my opinion she should have spent the extra money to get a great MacBook Pro laptop.
I had an unlimited budget when I bought my Macbook Pro 15" 2.2ghz C2D. The total cost came to approx $2300 (canadian) after changing the ram to 4gb (did it myself via. a local pc store). My requirement for this laptop was for film editing, and it needed to be certified for customer support from the company that makes the software for editing. I had 2 options, this run of the mill, 'pricey' mac laptop fully certified, or an HP laptop with the significant difference being that it had 4gb of ram and a workstation graphics card (since I game too that wasn't an option). Any guesses as to what the HP cost. No it wasn't $2000, it was actually nearly $4000 at the time. Would it have been any better for editing? Not a chance. Also, by using a mac, i can when needed use other editing apps (ie. FCPro, which i can't stand... but that's another story).
I use Avid Media Composer to do my film editing, both at work and at home. I know someone like her may not be ready for something as high end as Avid Media Composer, but what does she do when she decides she wants to use a more professional application? She has to cough up even more money for a certified laptop, because of strict support regulations.
All that being said, as a filmmaker or editor, you don't just "go out and get" a laptop that someone 'says' is good for video and film editing, you research your needs. In my case I spent a few months preparing for my purchase.
NOTE: Don't attack me with any updated certified hardware lists, this was a year ago when I did this purchase, and the information and prices were current at that time.
Macs dominate the graphic and newspaper business, they are far superior to a windows based system. Turn this ad around, ask why Vista needs so much power and RAM
