Liveside has reported some new information about Microsoft's new anti-malware product codenamed "Morro", formally named Windows Live OneCare.

According to Liveside, Microsoft considering the following names for it's new anti-malware program: Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Antivirus Plus, Microsoft Personal Security, and Microsoft Security Fundamentals.

"Morro", has been in limited alpha testing, will be available for free to all licensed Windows users, and while there is no confirmed release date yet, it's possible that the product will be available the second half of 2009. The goal of this product is to deliver high quality protection against malware while having a low impact on system performance and making it easy to install.

So, Neowin, which name do you think best fits? If I had to choose one, it'd be Microsoft Security Essentials. but I liked the name Windows Live OneCare better, and will miss it.

Microsoft Security Essentials sounds like another 'Security Centre' to me, I'd just go with Microsoft AntiVirus. I hope this product doesn't get hammered as hard as OneCare did.

Why wouldn't it? There are plenty of anti-virus vendors out there, and it's a business built on fear and doubt. Occasionally, that fear and doubt is valid but usually patching and commons sense does the trick.

Introducing a new name makes sense, as "OneCare" is already badly stigmatised from always placing last or before-last on AV Comparatives tests.

They'd better do some serious work on it. Probably it would be even easier to trash the epic fail OneCare completely and start something new from scratch with Morro. If it maintains just as poor a quality (or rather, the complete lack thereof) as OneCare, the new name will get tarnished quickly as well.

I would love an Apple-esque name, such as 'Microsoft protect and forget' to create a new awareness that things can be done easily in 7 yet easy does not mean cheapo, bad or weak.

I do not think that any of the names listed are OK. Actually I agree with "Doabulous" 'Microsoft protect and forget' is good I like it ! Or something similar.
The reason why I don't like the others are:
Microsoft Antivirus Plus is a name that virtually says that it is as good as the other antivirus software PLUS something else. As we know nothing about "Morro" it doesn't make sense.
Microsoft Security Essentials is a name that says it has a "suite" of security software, we don't know that it has, so this doesn't sound good either.
Microsoft Personal Security is a name that summons up thoughts of going the other way and personal software is usually not up to stratch (in my mind anyway), so that counts that one out.
Micorosoft Security Fundamentals is a name that summons up thoughts of a swag of security programs such as Norton Internet Security. As Morro is evidently only one program this also does not cut the mustard for me either.

Frankly, I think people will always bash something that has Microsoft and Security in it's name
#5 ajua on 01 May 2009 - 07:43
If it is top-noch in detection rates, it only will be good news for everyone.

They ought to just release it as downloadable component/add-on for Windows Defender.

It will come with Windows 7.

No it won't. Microsoft would face tons of anti-trust lawsuits from the likes of Symantec and McAfee, among others.

lol, yeah i think they learnt from that mistake already

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Microsoft received no ramification for releasing OneCare so why in the hell would there be any sanctions for the release of Morro? Think about it....

OneCare wasn't included in Vista. It was a seperate download. Faisal Islam means if it was included with 7.

The poster did know what he was talking about. Faisal Stated that it would be included in Windows 7. If it is included in Windows 7 directly and not as a download, MS would face Anti-Trust issues by other Anti-Virus Companies.

not if they make it fully removable/disableable through either the control panel or the installation of another antivirus/security program.

What's wrong with sticking with the ForeFront brand even with the desktop AV?
#9.1 slinky333 on 01 May 2009 - 21:18
I agree. They should call it 'Forefront Personal Edition' or 'Forefront Free Edition'.

i think forefront looks more like a business type software suite... not consumer oriented

I would go for "Microsoft Personal Security". Other names are either too techie for consumers or sound fishy like rogue software.
#10.1 +statm1 on 01 May 2009 - 15:41
+1
#11 +xiphi on 01 May 2009 - 13:31
I don't care if it's not listed, but OneCare fits. All of the names listed are BORING. I still don't get why they decided to dump a good product.
#12 +chorpeac on 01 May 2009 - 13:36
Names don't matter as much as efficiency does. You could name it Microsoft "anything", as long as it scores well on the security tests.
#13 Amodin on 01 May 2009 - 13:37
I'd be willing to definitely try this. I use Forefront on all of my machines, and it's been really a great product. It's not a lot of overhead on the machines, updates daily, and have had no problems. It even does SQL analyzing!
#14 DSLJay on 01 May 2009 - 14:24
I like MS Antivirus since it will not have the extras in it that One Care did. It is simple.

MSAV or WLAV = Microsoft antivirus and windows live anti virus

MSAV

That is what I would suggest. It's simple and easy to say.
#16 some_guy on 01 May 2009 - 21:13
if microsoft intends for this product to provide the basic necessities for security, the name should reflect it with the "essentials" or "basic" or "fundamental."
#17 LiquidSolstice on 02 May 2009 - 06:31
The best name would be ESET NOD32 Antivirus.

Oh wait, that's already taken. Damn, ah well.
#18 Electric Bolt on 03 May 2009 - 18:36
Eww, Microsoft anything sounds bad, call it Windows anything. For example, Windows EasyProtect sounds so much better IMO compared to Microsoft EasyProtect, all of the names they announced are really bad.
#19 carmatic on 05 May 2009 - 13:16
personally, i think Morro sounds cool enough to be a final name

it gives a sense of confidence and security to me
#20 The Grasshopper on 12 Jun 2009 - 09:46
bumping this back, I want to add the name
Windows Stronghold to the list
