Liveside has reported some new information about Microsoft's new anti-malware product codenamed "Morro", formally named Windows Live OneCare.According to Liveside, Microsoft considering the following names for it's new anti-malware program: Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Antivirus Plus, Microsoft Personal Security, and Microsoft Security Fundamentals.
"Morro", has been in limited alpha testing, will be available for free to all licensed Windows users, and while there is no confirmed release date yet, it's possible that the product will be available the second half of 2009. The goal of this product is to deliver high quality protection against malware while having a low impact on system performance and making it easy to install.
So, Neowin, which name do you think best fits? If I had to choose one, it'd be Microsoft Security Essentials. but I liked the name Windows Live OneCare better, and will miss it.
Why wouldn't it? There are plenty of anti-virus vendors out there, and it's a business built on fear and doubt. Occasionally, that fear and doubt is valid but usually patching and commons sense does the trick.
They'd better do some serious work on it. Probably it would be even easier to trash the epic fail OneCare completely and start something new from scratch with Morro. If it maintains just as poor a quality (or rather, the complete lack thereof) as OneCare, the new name will get tarnished quickly as well.
The reason why I don't like the others are:
Microsoft Antivirus Plus is a name that virtually says that it is as good as the other antivirus software PLUS something else. As we know nothing about "Morro" it doesn't make sense.
Microsoft Security Essentials is a name that says it has a "suite" of security software, we don't know that it has, so this doesn't sound good either.
Microsoft Personal Security is a name that summons up thoughts of going the other way and personal software is usually not up to stratch (in my mind anyway), so that counts that one out.
Micorosoft Security Fundamentals is a name that summons up thoughts of a swag of security programs such as Norton Internet Security. As Morro is evidently only one program this also does not cut the mustard for me either.
No it won't. Microsoft would face tons of anti-trust lawsuits from the likes of Symantec and McAfee, among others.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. Microsoft received no ramification for releasing OneCare so why in the hell would there be any sanctions for the release of Morro? Think about it....
OneCare wasn't included in Vista. It was a seperate download. Faisal Islam means if it was included with 7.
The poster did know what he was talking about. Faisal Stated that it would be included in Windows 7. If it is included in Windows 7 directly and not as a download, MS would face Anti-Trust issues by other Anti-Virus Companies.
not if they make it fully removable/disableable through either the control panel or the installation of another antivirus/security program.
i think forefront looks more like a business type software suite... not consumer oriented
i like the word live and the word essentials
That is what I would suggest. It's simple and easy to say.
