According to an article by TorrentFreak, Sweden's Pirate Party seems all set to gain a seat in the EU Parliament, according to polls in Swedish newspaper DN.se. The Pirate Party has received significant attention since the Pirate Bay Trial.The party is predicted to gain 5.1% of all votes in the EU elections, which are taking place this June. Should they gain that, they would be guaranteed a seat in the EU Parliament. The party has over 41,750 members, and will soon be the third largest political party in Sweden. The Young Pirate youth organisation, associated with the Pirate Party, is currently Sweden's largest youth organisation, based on the amount of members it has.
"In January of 2006, we set sail for new civil liberties land by bypassing today's politicians and talking directly to voting citizens — that is, with the goal of kicking some of today's politicians out of office. It appears we've just heard the first LAND AHOY! from the watch," said Rick Falkvinge, leader of the Pirate Party, talking to TorrentFreak.
The party is already larger than Sweden's Green Party, with major support from those in the 18-30 year old age group. The Pirate Party gained 9000 members on the day of the Pirate Bay verdict, which kick-started a huge growth in popularity for the party.

They are. The White House and Congress have been getting it from both sides. Bipartisanship is what the US was founded upon--it's what makes the minority opinion heard. But the things that have gotten done in the past three months have been pretty effective if you ask me. And I'm usually a skeptic.

The thing is: it doesn't even have to do with piracy anymore. It's so sad that I *have* to vote for these guys if I at all want someone that have these issues on their agenda. I don't want a future where I'm assumed "guilty until proven innocent" just because I'm online. This wouldn't be an as big issue to me, if it just wasn't for the fact that our internet presence is a big part of our lives nowadays. Heh, I think the issue is rather that they aren't listening to their voters. If potential voters are not willinh to listen to a certain political party, the party is doing it wrong.

I'm sorry, let me put it in layman's terms for you. Downloading is not, and has never been "illegal". Uploading and or sharing copyrighted material is illegal. It is NOT stealing, it is copyright infringement. There IS a difference. If you're incapable of differentiating between the two, maybe you shouldn't bother discussing it. Are they both illegal? Absolutely. But they are NOT the same thing. Downloading copyrighted material != stealing. Uploading != stealing.

For crying out loud, quit this crap of likening physical product losses to copyright infringement. A solution to one extreme (copyrights shouldn't exist, as the Pirate Party stands for) isn't what you're suggesting either, that no one shall question owners of a skewed and outdated model of earning revenue off content.

The thing is-- even if content creation stopped tomorrow, there's plenty to go around for the forseeable future. More than people could realistically consume in a lifetime.
Sure, in a no-copyright world, by the time I'm 120, I might run out of everything except fan-dubs of Czech sitcoms and hentai featuring anthromorphic freight locomotives, but by then, my primary concern will be drool management.
I could see three ways that the Pirate Party could evolve:
* As a single-issue party that expires with its issue. (compare, say, the temperance movement)
* Attempting to adapt its platform to other issues where there's common ground among their base (I'd expect "fast, ubiquitous broadband" and "network neutrality", for example)
* As a "preserve the status quo" movement-- perhaps people don't subscribe to it as a party per-se anymore, but as a group that would pick itself back up any time people brought the threat of copyright back.
As a resident of Sweden I should tell you that, as a matter of fact, downloading copyrighted material is illegal here too.
I stand corrected. Sweden is the first place (That I'm aware of) that has outlawed downloading. My North American ignorance shines brightly. My apologies. The rest of what I said however, still stands. It is still copyright infringement, not stealing and I should rephrase what I said above. In Canada and the US thus far, downloading is not illegal. Uploading is.
