According to an article by TorrentFreak, Sweden's Pirate Party seems all set to gain a seat in the EU Parliament, according to polls in Swedish newspaper DN.se. The Pirate Party has received significant attention since the Pirate Bay Trial. The party is predicted to gain 5.1% of all votes in the EU elections, which are taking place this June. Should they gain that, they would be guaranteed a seat in the EU Parliament. The party has over 41,750 members, and will soon be the third largest political party in Sweden. The Young Pirate youth organisation, associated with the Pirate Party, is currently Sweden's largest youth organisation, based on the amount of members it has.
"In January of 2006, we set sail for new civil liberties land by bypassing today's politicians and talking directly to voting citizens — that is, with the goal of kicking some of today's politicians out of office. It appears we've just heard the first LAND AHOY! from the watch," said Rick Falkvinge, leader of the Pirate Party, talking to TorrentFreak.
The party is already larger than Sweden's Green Party, with major support from those in the 18-30 year old age group. The Pirate Party gained 9000 members on the day of the Pirate Bay verdict, which kick-started a huge growth in popularity for the party.

Not the laws he "broke", however
weren't.
Like the US, they may quickly find it is NOT change for the better - but betterment for those elected only!
Too bad ignorant people tend to believe promises of "free ice cream." (google it)

I'm confused. I thought the majority of US citizens were giving approving marks to their elected officials so far this year.

They are. The White House and Congress have been getting it from both sides. Bipartisanship is what the US was founded upon--it's what makes the minority opinion heard. But the things that have gotten done in the past three months have been pretty effective if you ask me. And I'm usually a skeptic.
Experts are saying our deficit will grow to 14 TRILLION $ before Obama is done. Yeah, I call that change. Like I said earlier - google "free ice cream" and you will see what I mean. Jack's magic beans had nothing on Barack's plan.
Yes, because when Bush left the White house, the economy was perfect. Then Obama ruined the economy and destroyed everything.
Got to love the mentality that breaks something and then gets upset when it isn't fixed fast or cheap enough.
most of the national depicit is due to the wars which bush started in office, hate bringing it up since hes been mowed over it ALOT, but its true.
bush left him a desk with a house from a deck of cards about to collapse, and slammed the door on the way out.

bipartisanship was even less represented in the previous administration. the democrats just had the good grace not to act like a bunch of children throwing a tantrum about it.
Obama increased the defect in 8 weeks by the same amount Bush did in 8 years. the fact is its Washington fault, and everyone has lost their common sense or just don't know enough enough economics to understand that this keynesian nonsense and deficit spending is going to ruin the dollar.
im not not pro democrat or pro republican, im 100% anti 2 party system. so please dont chalk me up as something im not.

Yep, and what is crazy is how you can have a President blame the former President for spending so much, turn around and spend more in his first 100 days, then argue since Bush did it, its ok for him.
Change you can believe in!
Then don't. And keep on topic.
The thing is: it doesn't even have to do with piracy anymore. It's so sad that I *have* to vote for these guys if I at all want someone that have these issues on their agenda. I don't want a future where I'm assumed "guilty until proven innocent" just because I'm online. This wouldn't be an as big issue to me, if it just wasn't for the fact that our internet presence is a big part of our lives nowadays. They're so much underestimating the importance of bringing these topics up to debate here, especially if considering their younger generation.
I would say the majority of people feel very distanced from their MEPs/MPs/whatever it is where you are...

If you are not willing to talk to them, then they will be distant.

Neigh is the sound a horse makes; nay is the word you are looking for.
Heh, I think the issue is rather that they aren't listening to their voters. If potential voters are not willinh to listen to a certain political party, the party is doing it wrong.
This is only shows that you fight fire with fire. Dirty politics, is finially coming back to smack them in the face like dirty diaper. All I can say is it's about time. Hopefully this transends to North America.
Maybe someone should form a Pirate Party in the US....
These guys have a chance of being elected to represent thousands of people.
And disturbing. But when the "free" music and movies run out I wonder what their party will stand for. Stealing chocolate bars? Cars? Heck, everyone should just steal everything. It makes as much sense as illegal downloading.

Don't be ridiculous. If you didn't have your head stuck so far up the **AA's nether region, you'd realize how utterly ridiculous you sound. The fact that you call illegal downloading "stealing" speaks volumes about just how uneducated you really are in this whole matter.
I'm sure you'll have some lame rebuttal comparing illegal downloading to stealing, and how the whole world is failing because of piracy. Let me help you out before you spew such nonsense, save it. It's been beaten to death and there is still nothing anywhere in any place on this planet that criminalizes downloading, copyrighted or not. No laws forbid you from downloading anything from the Internet, nor do I expect there to ever be.
I'm sorry, let me put it in layman's terms for you. Downloading is not, and has never been "illegal". Uploading and or sharing copyrighted material is illegal. It is NOT stealing, it is copyright infringement. There IS a difference. If you're incapable of differentiating between the two, maybe you shouldn't bother discussing it. Are they both illegal? Absolutely. But they are NOT the same thing. Downloading copyrighted material != stealing. Uploading != stealing.
Look it there, Riaa-paid shills are already posting on Neowin!
You won't be getting anywhere with that nonsense, you'll only be laughed at for your moronic statements.
Let's show them by voting Pirate Party on the upcoming EU elections!
Yes, we can!

For crying out loud, quit this crap of likening physical product losses to copyright infringement. A solution to one extreme (copyrights shouldn't exist, as the Pirate Party stands for) isn't what you're suggesting either, that no one shall question owners of a skewed and outdated model of earning revenue off content.
And disturbing. But when the "free" music and movies run out I wonder what their party will stand for.
The thing is-- even if content creation stopped tomorrow, there's plenty to go around for the forseeable future. More than people could realistically consume in a lifetime.
Sure, in a no-copyright world, by the time I'm 120, I might run out of everything except fan-dubs of Czech sitcoms and hentai featuring anthromorphic freight locomotives, but by then, my primary concern will be drool management.
I could see three ways that the Pirate Party could evolve:
* As a single-issue party that expires with its issue. (compare, say, the temperance movement)
* Attempting to adapt its platform to other issues where there's common ground among their base (I'd expect "fast, ubiquitous broadband" and "network neutrality", for example)
* As a "preserve the status quo" movement-- perhaps people don't subscribe to it as a party per-se anymore, but as a group that would pick itself back up any time people brought the threat of copyright back.
As a resident of Sweden I should tell you that, as a matter of fact, downloading copyrighted material is illegal here too.
I stand corrected. Sweden is the first place (That I'm aware of) that has outlawed downloading. My North American ignorance shines brightly. My apologies. The rest of what I said however, still stands. It is still copyright infringement, not stealing and I should rephrase what I said above. In Canada and the US thus far, downloading is not illegal. Uploading is.
No books worth reading
No music worth listening to
No movies worth watching
Wow, sounds like a great reality.
