.TV domain name will disappear as Tuvalu is sinking

GoDaddy is telling its clients not to buy .TV domains because the small island country is slowly sinking; Tuvalu is the small island country that is responsible for the .TV web address. The problem is that the island nation is slowly sinking and that one day the country will be abandoned and according to ICANN so should all of the address related to that specific country code.

The .TV address is popular for the infomercial types even though it technically has nothing to do with television at all but is a mere coincidence that the abbreviations are the same. Will ICANN actually force this domain name off the internet once the country disappears, probably not, it's a high value domain ending that should remain active for decades to come.

If they do decide to remove the domain ending you can be sure that lawsuits will spring up everywhere due to some high profile companies that register the domains for infomercial related products. If not you can be sure Billy Mays and that ShamWow guy will put up a good fight too.

That would be an interesting fight...

.su domain still exists...

So Tuvalu couldn't simply move to another island?

A lot of countries sinking have nothing to do with anthropogenic global warming. Anybody seeing the line of atolls and sea bumps trailing Hawaii can see that. The decay of small oceanic islands happens, regardless of what we do.

I think it's just marketing. Do you know how expensive .TV names are?

Don't know about prices now, but years ago when I had one, they were among the cheapest domain names to buy (this was probably 7 years ago or so).

Well the coast of Britain is suffering from long shore drift and erosion is getting worse, so do we stop the .co.uk domains?

.TV is used I guess by a lot of television companies; I did not realise that they became dead if a country sunk into the ocean.

The UK isn't going to sink anytime soon is it now.

+1 I don't think the scottish highlands for example will go soon.

The ISO 3166-1 code for the United Kingdom is GB.

Considering the battle to save .su, and that without major corporate sponsorship....

Still waiting for .uk. Instead of .co.uk. An extra 3 keystrokes I can never get back! Every other country has it, why cant we?
#6.1 Fedr0 on 01 May 2009 - 14:23
I also never understood why you have a .co in the domain.
#6.2 Minchino on 01 May 2009 - 15:51
Waiting? Is it planned? I always thought it was so it could be split up into distinct sub-domains, co for commercial, .gov.uk, and .ac.uk for academic. Completely pointless though in my opinion.

Some other countries are like that too. .co.jp is another one... The US has a really odd domain setup for state domains. .state..us so .state.md.us for example.
#6.4 Lord Ba'al on 01 May 2009 - 23:09
Japan is already transitioning to .jp only domains, so why can't the UK have .uk only as well?
#6.5 m.keeley on 02 May 2009 - 05:57
.co.uk is the UK's .com
#6.6 HyperJack on 04 May 2009 - 09:05
.uk domain does exist. the nhs has one.
www.nhs.uk

nominet.org.uk controls the registration of .uk domains.

the cook islands wouldnt let me get <myname>.co.ck

probably going to get snipped, but thats domains they have.
#8 torrentthief on 01 May 2009 - 14:44
they could just suck up sand from the sea bed and re-make the island, all they need is probably 1x1m^2 to be able to call it an island im sure. No point worrying.
#9 exotoxic on 01 May 2009 - 15:39
why not just change the ermm scope?? instead of having it for a country change it to been for things TV related.

FFS, it is not sinking today or tomorrow or even soon. It will be a long time from now before it "ceases to exist" and there will almost certainly be alternative domain naming options by then.

#10.1 RPDL on 01 May 2009 - 21:59
At the end of the 21st century it will be a problem. The Island is only 4.5m above sea level at its highest points.
#11 bigdsvideo on 01 May 2009 - 17:07
Wow, this means Leo Laporte's whole network would be messed up, because I think he uses .TV in all his stuff.
#12 +Hell-In-A-Handbasket on 01 May 2009 - 17:45
drape the island in ShamWow's, should buy them a little bit of time

j/k
#13 aadhu on 01 May 2009 - 17:50
hmmm.. is it sinking that fast? It probably would be around still during our lifetime.
(1 reply) #14 Andrew-DB on 01 May 2009 - 17:57
They could rename it to .TV-Blub

Don't you mean .tv.blub.blub.blub

After a BRIEF Google search it seems that we have 50-ish years before the island sinks. Hardly seems worth worring about the domain issue yet. (and since I'm 44, I don't care at all. I really dont think I care what domain names will be like when I'm 94)

"Tuvalu could be swallowed up by the sea in less than 50 years if the planet gets much hotter."

TNT is in big trouble!
#19 Ludexiz on 02 May 2009 - 00:18
haha wow it's sinking? for real? how big is it? maybe the island is actually the back of a giant turtle! xD
#20 m.keeley on 02 May 2009 - 05:59
So it might be gone in 50 years, or not, even if it is seems a bit premature to stop using the domain names. It's also assuming they don't move to another island and keep their name.
#21 outspoken on 02 May 2009 - 10:54
Nice time to squat on these domains cheap.
GoDaddy's notice seems to be like one of those stock market small cap price manipulation e-mails i used to get in spam, people would buy the stocks based on recommendations, prices would go up and then crook would sell.
Only here they seem to be trying to make .tv cheaper for squatters.
ICANN is not stupid to discontinue a top-level domain used be large media houses!!

Time for conquest then, Tuvalu!
