Amazon Kindle to launch larger version on Wednesday

It appears that all signs are pointing to a larger version of the Kindle being announced this Wednesday. The NYT had reported that an announcement as early as this week could be made and then shortly after Amazon posted a notice that a press conference would be held on Wednesday, May 6 at 10:30 am ET.

Other than a larger screen not many details are known; it's expected that the devices larger screen will make it more suited for newspaper reading. Currently the smaller screen inhibits the device from replacing the traditional newspaper.

If Amazon can create a device that does replace the newspaper in its entirety then they may have a huge hit on their hands. If any other new features will be unveiled is anyone's guess but it wouldn't make too much sense only because the Kindle 2 is only a few months old.

How about make it cheaper? It's a book reader, not the ENIAC.

Agreed. I really want the Sony Reader, but at $280 it's still a little pricey. And then the cost of eBooks needs to come down. Often they are priced the same as a physical book. Not acceptable.

Since my wife is an avid bookworm and i'm running out of shelf room for books she has read but won't get rid of (I guess I can't talk either, I have a couple of shelves of old PC Games), I think the Kindle would be a nice thing to have. I am afraid she wouldn't like it as much as the actual book itself though. I am also turned away by the price. For the same amount of money, I think she would rather have a netbook....

One day they will put books on a non-electronic portable format that you can use any time, anywhere, without using any energy, that store permanently in hard copy, and don't require a computer or Internet connection.

Oh wait...

I really like my RCA eBook, but I also only paid $5 for it at a thrift store.

It's not the tech that's the issue, it's that a device that's sole purpose is to display book text shouldn't cost as much as your entire existing print library. For what Amazon charges for the Kindle it should come with the entire Wheel of Time series.

Just because this doesn't interest you doesn't mean it's not something many people could use....

My friend loves hers because she frequently travels. Her neck is bad, so rather than bringing a bunch of heavy books on the plane so she can pick what to read, she now has this and it has everything she wants.

+1 for the Jordan reference.

Make the Kindle 2 $99 or $149 with a huge bundle of books and it will sell like crazy! A bigger Kindle better mean the old one will get a HUGE price reduction. These things are outrageously priced and too CLOSED.

I don't think Amazon has problems selling these at current prices. They already selling like hotcakes.

When are they going to learn to put a Color screen on devices like this? I realize that alot of newspapers and books don't need color, but seriously anything created with a screen nowadays needs a color screen. Magazine subscriptions/Comic Books/Game Strategy Books are just a few formats that need color to look great on a device like this, not to mention if it has Wifi the Internet...
Obviously it's not out yet, but it would be something I would actually buy if it accepted color and any size SD compatibility would be great!

You do realize that their screens are electronic ink and meant to mimic real paper. This is why its not color, also it works a lot better in sun light then any color screen. Other then that they need to bring the price down drastically before I will even consider buying one. I'm thinking 100 bucks at the max with a monthly fee for the whisper net.

I'm sorry but my morning paper is in color for a long while now and many books I read have colors in them....

So yeah, I'm waiting for color e-ink.
#8 m.keeley on 04 May 2009 - 21:58
Still prefer real paper, still doesn't come close to flicking through a book. Even if it came close I'd hold out for colour.
#9 clotz2000 on 05 May 2009 - 20:44
ok, get rid of the "authentic" e-ink and make it more functional with better features. If I could carry around 16GB of ebooks and such on SD Cards, Have a Color Screen, And integrate touch into the screen so you can "flip" through a book with the swipe of a finger as if you were flipping through the pages and you got me sold...
