Even after the release of Windows 7, it looks like Microsoft won't be quick to ditch Vista according to Computer World. Microsoft plans to continue selling Vista until January 2011. However, they will drop support for Vista in less than 3 years. This seems to go against an earlier hint by a Microsoft General Manager that the company would get rid of Vista as soon as Windows 7 was released.
However, Microsoft not ditching Vista as soon as Windows 7 is released shouldn't come as a surprise. It's a company policy to keep an OS in distribution for 4 years after its debut.

I don't think they forgot so much as they just underestimated their ability to provide. That is why that "feature" wasn't carried over to win7.
Anyway, it doesn't really matter if MS discontinues Vista or not... no at least half-way sane person will buy Vista anymore after Win7 is out.
bottom line, vista was never that bad. but windows7 is better.
he's bought a pc and has vista HP on it...
wouldn't have a clue how to re install an OS either.
do you think he is going to go out a pay for win 7?
why should he?
But since you're asking if he'll want to get Win 7, i'd say yes. Consumers like the latest things, and moreso when others say "it's the best thing you can have for your computer! (Unlike Vista)"*

I agree. Especially when Windows 7 is basically the same thing despite the lies spread about Vista. I've tried both, and they ARE the same with only minor differences. This thing may have lawsuit written all over it.
Another guy who only call an OS different if it has a new GUI.
Oh and be sure to follow the builds changes next time... so you can see the changes made.

You don't get it. They DID change the GUI. Thing is though, 7 is much closer to Vista than it is to XP. Sure, they've added a bunch of new features for the end-user and made some performance improvements, but as a whole, they're very similar.
And I've been following the builds.
I don't know what builds you were looking at, but there have been A LOT of changes made in Windows 7. It may have been built on Vista, but it isn't the same as Vista as you imply...
As for the lawsuit remark, are you suggesting the Windows Vista Team sue the Windows 7 Team? LMAO
Did the Windows 2000 team sue the Windows XP team back in 2001?
Let's not forget how long Windows 2000's support is; it's still on its extended support period.
Besides, vista isn't THAT bad if I'm honest. Home Premium runs quite smoothly if im honest.
Windows 7 definitely uses a lot of vistas GUI, and its just expanded on, with better performance and ease of access for people.
There's no good for MS if Vista ditched as soon as 7 released.
Before someone corrects me, my bad. I seem to have mistake the 2011 for 2013. :/ Just woke up..
Dude, Vista was release to the public in January 2007, not 2006.
People sure seem to be happy doing this with XP...
Of course, really, neither would I.
But the original release was to MSDN and technet users back on my 14th birthday, November 7, 2006
Now, old Vista users must get Windows 7 at highly discounted rates.

Window7 requires 15 GB of free disk space for the o/s. XP 2 GB. Buyers of new PC's will be forced into that horrible bloat, anyone with sense will but a Netbook with XP, for $250 while they can! Sadly, Vista (and Windows 7) will be around for years to come.

Your ignorance saddens me to think that there are still people like you out there. Recommended space for XP was 15 GB. Total install space was 2 GB. 20 GB for Seven, 3-4 GB for install only.
Windows 7 is Vista as much as Vista was XP. It's Microsoft's new OS that runs on the same NT kernel, just improved. And infact, as I have observed, Windows 7 is much more responsive on the same hardware as Vista was. Closer to being that of XP. The immense amount of features in Windows 7 should slow it right down, but seeing the performance I'm getting I have to give big kudos to Microsoft on the optimization.
I am willing to bet... no... I know as an honest fact that you've never used Vista, or Windows 7 for that matter.
Good day Sir.

That's one hilarious conspiracy theory.

Well Said. Just Perfect.
Dunno what you've installed, but I have Windows 7 and Office 2007 Enterprise installed and it only takes up 12GB. You have to remember Windows 7 is not necessarily be targeted at the NetBook crowd (totally different machines), however it will be offerre on a slimmer level. With storage prices so small now, what's the problem?
ummm, are you serious? Microsoft has made Windows 7 in a way to also be friendly to netbook users. From doing this, they will also ween off some XP users and be a good competitor to the Linux distros netbooks usually come with.
Vista will be a very tough sell as soon as 7 is released to the market. It's usually hard enough to continue selling a previous OS alongside a new one let alone Vista VS 7!
Poor Vista, you brought new Windows technology to the world and failed; how ironic that 7 is going to be so much better yet without Vista you wouldn't be.
Somehow I feel the same is going to be said about Windows 8 and 9.
Vista will always have a place in my heart (and my hard drive)
Yup, same... well maybe not my hard drive, but at least in my heart.
People think of it as a failure. It wasn't. Without Vista we wouldn't have Windows 7 today.
Vista will continue to be used by the people who bought a system from PC World and don't know much more than surfing the net and checking email.
Not to mention it is all about your customers. If they have enough people on Vista they'll keep supporting it or loose business.

Yes, they will have to support Vista; however depending on how the market shifts towards Windows 7 will determine how long the vendors keep supporting the older OS.
/sarcasm
At it again with your subtle anti-Vista trolling, I see. Just give it up. It's tiresome. Besides, what do you care? You'll just keep fawning over XP anyway.
So, you didn't bother reading the article then?
Oh right they didn't... So you're NOT forced to buy any new version of Winodws, ever.
What are you talking about. Have another drink/smoke or whatever you are doing?
Yay!!
Support is extended for XP until 2014. Where's the kill-switch?
Check newegg for OEM vista costs, they're very likely going to be comparable.
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/sea...a=WINDOWS+VISTA
in other words, 2011 year is the end of SP1 support, not the end of Vista SP2 which will continue...
Besides, Vists Sp2 is just alot better than SP1. Keeps the laptop fan better
I have a feeling that around 2011 vista will "die" but XP will still be extended , whenever xp comes close to end, it's extended one more year
Right now, a retail box Vista Home Premium costs $223 at Newegg. The OEM version, $100.
The problem is, I'm a hardware enthusiast, so I do like to change motherboards. This becomes offensively expensive with the OEM licenses which (theoretically) must be replaced with the board.
If anything, I could see it being a short-sighted cut into their market-- if you rebuild your PC and have to buy a new OS licence, you can sell the old hardware and licence, likely at below-market prices.
