As Neowin had previously reported, Amazon has unveiled its larger screened Kindle as predicted. The device boasts a 9.7 inch screen that rotates when the device is turned, a bump in storage space to 3.3GB, and a PDF reader but the real show stopper is the price at $489.00

The device will be subsidized by major newspaper outlets on contract although there is one restriction. You can only get the device subsidized if you live in a region where you can't get home delivery which means most will have to pay full retail.

The Kindle DX will ship this summer and is up for pre-order now at Amazon.

erm, no thanks...
does anyone even care about this kindle thing?
#1.1 GreyWolfSC on 06 May 2009 - 16:10
Sure. I love eBook readers, but $500 for a book? No, thanks.

I'm curious why there were three separate front page articles all covering the exact same thing.

I prefer my books to be... well, books. Cheaper, more portable, and requires less energy. And when I'm done they store easily on a shelf, passed on to a friend, or sold for money. Wow, what'll they think of next?

Careful. There are all kinds of underlying hidden energy costs in bringing that book to you. One might be able to argue that a person that has a life-time eBook reader would be "more green" than someone who gets everything on paper. Of course, this is America and I bet that the lifespan of these is at max 5 years. Oh well, more plastic for the landfills.

I've had my RCA eBook reader since it was released. I can't buy current books for it anymore as Gemstar doesn't exist anymore, but I've read boatloads of PD books from Project Gutenberg. The Kindle looks nice, but that's just an outrageous price for what is essentially a digital piece of paper.

I'd love to get one, but $489 is outrageous.

I can buy a room full of books for that price.
FAIL.
#3.1 Antiprophet on 06 May 2009 - 17:22
yeah, there is a charity book shop here and they let people donate books of all kinds and sell them for €1 a pop.
thats like 400 books and a decent book shelf's worth of what looks like cheap plastic tat...
does it even have a colour screen? it has to....
#4 Julius Caro on 06 May 2009 - 16:26
what's with the price?
#5 Knad on 06 May 2009 - 16:33
Far too expensive. Also needs to get smaller, still with a large screen, for me to get one. Invest in flexible oled displays, get their price down!

I see them all the time on the train to and from work.
#7 m.keeley on 06 May 2009 - 16:48
Close to $500 for a reader, must be having a laugh.
#8 gianpan on 06 May 2009 - 17:01
a 500$ ebook reader... why not getting a slide-in netbook? It's same price plus so many more...
#9 JohnCz on 06 May 2009 - 17:02
I'll just use my Windows laptop, thanks, along with my Zinio.com digital magazine subscription.
#10 betasp on 06 May 2009 - 17:03
THAT needs to be $299 and the other $149. Then I think they would both sell like hotcakes.
#11 yert* on 06 May 2009 - 17:55
Would be nice if they bundled in about a dozen free books of choice from the amazon kindle store.
#12 C_Guy on 06 May 2009 - 18:08
Yup. Or you can get a 10" netbook with a 160 GB hard drive for less money.

Smart move there, Amazon.

Anyone saying the price is outrageous don't really see the bigger picture. Okay if you read the odd novel from a charity shop it is clearly not for you.

I see it more of a magazine / newspaper replacement where a large proportion of price comes from printing etc. and there's no need to keep them. - Or at least they could be electronically archived. Just one weekly magazine subscription for 2 years would pay for this device. So if you get a few and a newspaper etc. it soon becomes a sensible alternative.
#13.1 m.keeley on 06 May 2009 - 18:42
Most magazines are colour so it's a step backwards in that respect and therefore is over priced.
#13.2 Tjcrazy on 07 May 2009 - 16:08
You would also need to pay for the magazines. Even though they are digitalised they still need to be payed for.
#14 Webworldx on 06 May 2009 - 19:35
Buy a netbook.
#15 Shadrack on 06 May 2009 - 22:06
Well, it is too expensive for me to ever consider buying. Even the current model is too expensive. Over-priced.
#16 atari800 on 06 May 2009 - 22:21
Based on the price and the device.... I was expected to see an Apple logo on this.

The new 10" Netbook cost less, offer much more space, runs everything you want under Windows, Linux or even HackMacOSX. The LCD is in color, so if you need to read something with color pictures, you can! You can also surf the web....

And it plays everything, music, movies, photos, skype, IM, .... For $399.

So where does that leave the Kindle? Slim design and better battery life? For $90 more?

Couldn't agree more. A color screen would go along way in convincing the sheeple to buy one of these things ... They'll probably go the route of Apple II and get a foothold in schools and lets face it, people are so f'ing stupid they'll think that it's better because it's simpler (b&w). They should give the POS away and just charge more for the content ...
#17.2 atari800 on 07 May 2009 - 01:34
Sheeple....funny
and yes...it seems everything is a $9.99 subscription...whats the bonus out of the box here? I guess I missed it
#18 TruckWEB on 06 May 2009 - 23:31
It's nice to see people in the Amazon forum fight for their Kindle. Some are angry that Amazon is shipping this new DX model so soon after the release of Kindle 2, some are fighting that Netbook are not eReader so even suggesting a Netbook sound stupid to them.

Okay, so Netbook don't have e-ink screen and don't last 2 weeks on a single charge. Is it all worth the price asked?
