A recent job posting at Apple suggests that the company may be introducing 3G into future MacBooks as a standard. The job posting is seeking for a quality-assurance engineer with experience in various networking technologies, such as BlueTooth, Wi-Fi, and/or 3G Wireless Wan.

The job posting is only a small glimmer of hope that Apple could introduce 3G as a standard into all future MacBooks and possibly all manufactures for even PC laptops could follow suit. The next big addition to all future laptops could be 3G wireless support built into the computer, something Apple and AT&T already have a partnership with, with Apple's iPhone 3G.

If the possibility of future mobile computing could be connected with your wireless carrier data plan could open up a new range of support and possibilities for consumers and marketing companies. A huge advantage for Skype if wireless 3G comes standard in all laptops and MacBooks in the near future.

If they ever do, I'd imagine it would be MacBook Pro/MacBook Air only.

Good luck getting that plan with the kind of unlimited data option (re: no caps) that ANY laptop user is going to need to have to make that feature worth a damn. 8P

You wouldn't need unlimited, just enough to get you through the patches where you have no wi-fi.

It's really no different than an express card.

Plus I have a 6 GB/mo plan for $30 on my iPhone, more than enough to browse the web/stream when not near wi-fi.

It's about time they did this.

why?.

Currently i can connect and share my cellphone connection to the notebook, so i will not need to pay for two plans at once.

Most things that start as a dongle end up built in when they get small enough. It's really no surprise. The sim card can just go in a "flash-type" slot / flap.

Welcome to a few years ago? We've had this on our Thinkpad's for how many years now... knowing apple though since it is "Standard" they will lock you into a carrier of THEIR choosing not like Thinkpads and Dell where you pick the carrier and the mini-pci card that goes in for that carrier

ThinkPads look you in to a carrier; at least here in Australia. I was under the impression the Thinkpads (at least the T60's that I have owned) are branded by Verizon or Vodaphone at the WWAN.
