Well, this is a surprise. According to Mac|Life, the upcoming service pack for Mac OS X, dubbed 10.5.7, is due to be released on Friday. This is, as you can imagine, a rumor; Apple hasn't mentioned anything themselves, but apparently the source is within the company itself, so this could be credible.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 is due to bring a whole number of fixes and improvements, in areas such as "networking, syncing and BlueTooth issues," according to the website. OS X developers were seeded the most recent build, 9J58, on April the 29th. The build only fixed issues with iChat and Safari, so it's expected that this is the final. Additionally, it's implied that this will be the last update to the 10.5 iteration of the Mac operating system until Snow Leopard, which should have some announcements regarding its development at the WWDC in June.

Sit tight until Friday, Mac users, to see if this rumor pulls through, or watch it fall flat on its face.

OS X doesnt need to, it's a great operating system as-is, get over yourself!

Of course they won't, neither is it the intention... These are mainly just patches.

Watch the OS battle unfold as Windows 7 is about to be released.

You have that backwards. SL will be out first, then Windows 7.

Hah, you're still supporting Windows by buying their OS unless you pirate it.

*blush*

Anyways, bootcamp (at least in mbp) is pretty tricky and will not work correctly out of box.

At home these updates from Apple are ok...as an IT director each Apple Update creates a hellish nightmare for me. Apple will show a whole list of things they fix but they never show the list of things they break and everytime they break something that works perfectly fine in a previous release. They don't provide an fast way to roll back your system so I'm still at 10.5.5 because 10.5.6 seg faults all my network users at logout. 10.5.5 has it's issues and 10.5.4 fixed a bug in 10.5.3 that corupted 100s of adobe documents. etc.etc.

I would also have to say I prefer windows 7 over the current state of Mac OS.

Finally, someone who has an objective, rational opinion instead of, "Windows sucks. Mac rules."

I own both. I see flaws from both sides as well.
#9.2 5Horizons on 06 May 2009 - 15:26
It's sometimes bad for home users as well. My multi-monitor setup stopped working correctly with a graphics update (I think it was around 10.5.3ish or so?). They need to put more effort into not breaking stuff every time they put out an update.
#10 X@vier on 06 May 2009 - 12:34
I also hope this updates fixes the problems they have with the networking part of it, all my scripts that used to work under tiger without a problems don't work with leopard, the main reason we night not move to leopard and wait till snow leopard comes out.

"Additionally, it's implied that this will be the last update to the 10.5 iteration of the Mac operating system until Snow Leopard"

Any sources about that? Because Apple always leave an iteration of a system as updated as possible (10.X.8 or more) and there are still many little annoyances in Leopard that I dont think will be resolved with 10.5.7
#11.1 GreyWolfSC on 06 May 2009 - 14:23
He doesn't mean it will be the last Leopard update period, only the last one until Snow Leopard is released.

I see that, however its strange since as far as I remember that last update for each system came before the next major system, not after.

Whatever it is, it's good to have good OS competing each other... so we all user can be a better product.

I own both and happy with both.

hi,id like to know how many people are developing for MAC OS and how many for WINDOWS 7 ?
#13.1 vanacid on 06 May 2009 - 20:41
I develop for Mac OS AND Windows.

In fact, these are the platforms I must support when I program :
- Mac OS 10.4
- Mac OS 10.5
- Windows XP
- Windows Vista
- Windows 7 (I am testing on the RC)

I also develop for :
- iPhone OS v2.2
- iPhone OS v3.0 (to test compatibility)

Unsupported platform I develop for :
- Ubuntu Linux 8.10 (we will never release a software for Linux OS because my company doesn't want to invest money to test under more than 20 different distros, but it compiles, and it works, for now)

Like 6-10% for Macs and 85-90% for Windows? It pretty much represents the market share... And what does this have to do with 10.5.7 ?

Why is there a poll between Windows 7 and OS X's next service pack (10.6)? What does either have to do with OS X 10.5.7? Oh yeah, NOTHING.

How many people are sitting around trying to deicde between Windows 7 and OS X 10.6? Not many.

OS X's next service pack (10.6)?

You just can't help yourself, can you.. it's pathetic.
#15.5 vanacid on 06 May 2009 - 20:43
10.6 will not be a service pack, it is a new OS like Windows 7
(Mac OS 10.5.7 is a service pack though)

Absolutely. But C_Guy is so pathetically anti-Apple, that he has to get jibes in like that whenever he can. Everyone else knows that it's the next major release of OSX, and not a service pack.

It's a hard one.
Windows 7 is wonderful, I really love it. But Snow Leopard is still my preferred.
All the changes in Windows 7 are very impressive.
