Twitter's new business model: Search

Ever since Twitter launched, analysts have been looking for ways that the company could generate revenue and turn a profit off its microblogging service. Recently it has been the focus of numerous takeover talks and theories, and the focus of companies like Google, Facebook and even Apple, although that talk was later debunked.

However, as TechNewsWorld is reporting, it would seem that the new business model is saved searches. Much like Google, which indexes your searches for content, Twitter is expected to generate data for the companies and show exactly what the top searches and trends are. Once Twitter decides to sort through search results, that information will be used to in target advertising to generate revenue for the company.

Twitter can't seem to do this alone and in return may acquire Bit.ly to do it, in exchange for Twitter stock. However, as ReadWriteWeb reports, Bit.ly's servers have already been moved and operational under Twitter's rack, possibly in preparation for the update.

This is exactly what I've been saying they were going to do for a long time.

Hope it fails in a big way, and facebook too. Both pieces of junk that need to be removed for the good of society.

Facebook used to be the one social networking site that wasn't intrusive and annoying. With growth and trying to fill everyones needs it has become bloated and annoying to use. Still it is one of the best around. The real problem is people who see the need to use 10 social networking sites, and then invite me to all of them,,, errr no thanks. Facebook however still enables me to maintain a semi public profile than can be "found" by the vast majority of people.

Yes, as a customer is easy to complain, in fact is part of the role. Of course we can't put all the blame on the journalist but also in the editor (if any).

You are correct. The previous version of this article did not meet our standards for professionalism. It has been rewritten. We apologize that this slipped through our editorial process.

I don't get the current business model of twitter, in fact i barely understand what is the real value of twitter (with the exception of the trademark), Twitter as a technology is nothing new and nothing special.

It is new in the sense that it is the first true microblogging website. Its business model right now is virtually nonexistant; they are not making any money on it right now. However, things like targeted advertising or "premium" accounts will likely alter this. In the mean time, nonetheless, they aren't making a penny on it. By focusing on starting a great service, rather than making money with their brand new startup, they make sure that come the time that they are able to make money on it people are still very interested.

I was at a code camp and people there were talking about Twitter. Most of them were on Twitter. They said that I should get one. I got one and found out it was useless. I don't know what those people at code camp talking about.

It's only as useful or as useless as you make it.
