Good news from the kingdom of Redmond, fellow geeks; we've finally been given a more precise (though still not as precise as one could get) release date for Windows 7, the next operating system to come from Microsoft. Word comes from a PressPass article, and while it may be vague, it's still official.

Bill Veghte, who is senior vice president of the Windows Business at Microsoft, stated, "With early RC testing and extensive partner feedback we've received, Windows 7 is tracking well for holiday availability." This sits well with Acer's prediction (or maybe more than a prediction) that Windows 7 will hit shelves October 23rd, but it was pretty widely accepted that we'll see the new operating system by the end of the year anyway. Whether Acer's date is valid or not, who knows, but it very well could be.

Good news, and expect more to be available shortly on the matter (hopefully). As usual, you'll be able to find it right here on Neowin.

Same here and I thought the pubic beta worked wonderfully too! I am a little surprised they are waiting so long. I would think that they could release July or August if they wanted to, but I guess they want to take it slow to make sure the OEMs and developers have time to test drivers and compatibility. If the GA release is December then the probably means it will go gold sometime in October, I plan on installing it as soon as I can get it off TechNet!

When a MS exec says that it will be available for the Holidays, THIS is the timetable that makes that possible:

End of July RTM, so that OEMs can have it in hand long enough for a Sep/Oct product cycle in time for Holiday release.

Which is what I've been saying here since last year...

You post this in every time table article :|

Do you want a cookie? It will happen when it happens really. Not sure it matters all that much to most us (besides the desire to have it in RTM), except those who own MS stock...

Enough! You're not going to become famous off a very easy prediction.
#2.4 rm20010 on 11 May 2009 - 23:26
The OS being ready by the back-to-school shopping season would sound nice, seeing how at this rate the RC period will last longer than XP's. But if they want to wait it out to make sure ALL OEMs are ready for launch, that's fine by me.

XP RC1 was out on June 29, 2001. The OS was done on August 24. So if this testing period for Win7 lasts no more than, say three months, it should be done by no later than the end of July.

Actually, I already AM famous. 8P

But every time Neowin posts yet another NON-timetable article, I'm going to post the real timetable so everyone has the REAL information instead of the spin.

You're welcome. Now where's my damn cookie!?

Windows 7 would be the best Christmas gift for me. Looking back at Windows Vista when you're running Windows 7 is like looking back at Windows ME when you're running Windows XP.

No, Windows 7 is Vista Second Edition. The same idea is being applied here, just like when Windows 98 came out!

You must not make very much money.... what this costs will probably set me back a days paycheck.
#4.2 frypiggy on 12 May 2009 - 14:33
Why do people feel the need to publicly put someone down with a boasting retort at the expense of the other person? Who cares if you make more money then he/she does? There's probably a billion people who make more money then you do.

P1R4T3 obviously has a budget and is trying to follow it. Refrain from putting someone down by boasting about yourself.

All we need now is the official time frame for the free upgrade to Windows 7 when we purchase a new computer. I've been looking at a new notebook, but want to wait so I can qualify for the free upgrade.

I've loyally upgrade to each of Microsoft's new OSs even as far back as 3.11 but I'm sad to say Windows 7 is the first release of Windows I've ever been completely dissapointed in. I think it's been hyped up to much and it simply can't deliver. I think they should postpone to more of Windows 7's bugs are fixed. Some people see them some don't so don't all attack me saying oh I think it's completely fine.

What sort of bugs are you experiencing exactly?

My only problems were drivers related and I'm not dumb enough to blame the OS for that. All my programs are working properly, zero issues. Heck, even an almost 10 years old game (Diablo 2) is working flawlessly.

You say you go as far back as 3.11 so you're actually implying that Win 7 is a more disappointing release than WinME? Seriously?

DEC 31 2009 to be exact. Just 1 day before Jan 01 2010 (making sure so that its not 3yrs from vista rls)
#10.1 zenith2671 on 11 May 2009 - 22:03
July 1, 2009 is actually the 1st fiscal quarter of 2010, which Microsoft said Windows 7 would be released. Vista (business) was actually released in October 31st 2006.
#10.2 FATILA on 12 May 2009 - 13:56
Odd, considering Vista was not RTM until November 8, 2006. And surely you mean Enterprise was given to OEMS before release in january?

So are we gonna see some build in meantime?
#11.1 excalpius on 12 May 2009 - 03:45
You *might* see a leaked build, but I think it is VERY unlikely you will see an RC2. I think the next official build from MS will be Windows 7 RTM.

I have been reviewing the new Windows Vista Second Edition (Windows 7), and I am impressed, but not overly impressed. It seems to be much faster, and most of my hardware worked right from the start, but I would like to see more customization. For example, I rather enjoy the current taskbar, but would like to see more options in terms of the task bar. Other thoughts welcome!
#12.1 Calum on 12 May 2009 - 02:33
Windows Vista Second Edition (Windows 7)?
I've never heard of that edition of Windows 7, you must have made it up...
I understand you are trying to say Windows 7 should be referred to as Windows Vista Second Edition, but, by that logic, we would never have gotten past Windows 1.0. It'd be something like "Windows 1.0 R9" and Windows Vista would not even exist, let alone your made up "Windows Vista Second Edition".
This is nothing like Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE. Windows 7 contains many improvements over Windows Vista, but not just in bug fixes, performance improvements and compatibility issues, it has also introduced a fair few new features and improved consistency. I suggest you read up a bit about Windows 7 and maybe try it out? It's obvious you haven't yet.

I have Windows 7, and I do see improvement, but nothing to get to excited about. I actually did not make this up (Windows Vista Second Edition), I was actually quoting an article from a periodical, perhaps you need to read! And I stand by what I wrote, if you recall when Windows 98 came out, then Windows 98 Second Edition, it was revealed with vast improvements, so what is the difference? Windows 7 is essentially a improvement over Vista - the exact same idea applies here!

I just want to say this. I have been a Vista user for last 2 years. I thought I saw enough the evolution of windows in term of stability and speed. Although people say Vista sucks, I have to say it is significant better than Windows XP. It has not crashed a single time. applications run even faster. Everything seems perfect with Vista.

Then, I tried Windows 7 RC. Thinking it is just like Vista rebrand, Ok let's try. Within 5 minutes, I
"scream" silently Oh my GOD. Windows 7 is extremely good and advanced OS. It is even better and faster than Vista. UAC is less annoyed and less prompt. It works so intelligently that I wished M$ could make that for Vista. Folders browsing pop out on my old 1gb ram laptop like instant, no more wait like in Vista (a few delays), and completely superior than WinXP (wait for ages). The whole machine run cooler than Vista. The fan is turn on less often because the CPU doesn;t need it to cool off. And many more and more things to say.

Anyways, I thought I have seen and use all including the annoying, awkwardly-designed OSX (you know what I mean by saying that if you have the same opinions like me). Windows 7 promises something great to come. You skeptics should not miss out this. You need an upgrade seriously. By the way, I am not working for M$ to write these.

(1 reply) #20 boho on 12 May 2009 - 13:50
It would be a public relations disaster if they do not release it just before the "holiday season", dare I say it... Christmas! (Even if it were Dec 2010! ). This is what caused all the problems with Vista, and the huge (ongoing) class action, and another fall-out with the EU.

Being that Windows 7 is just an update of Vista code, there should be no need for manufacturers to test it, though I can see that the XP mode has the potential for another fall-out between CPU manufacturers, hardware suppliers and the company.

Windows 7 business editions, may just have the killer app. with "XP mode" virtual machine, my palms have started to itch, with that!
#20.1 skynetXrules on 12 May 2009 - 19:24
dude.

a slight change from a patch can break programs

let alone full blown OS
#21 Sewje on 12 May 2009 - 20:01
Unless there is going to be a killer app that needs W7, Its still won't topple XP. Computing has reach saturation, the benefits of a new OS isn't as high as it used to be. No number of Updates will fix it and thats all the new OS's are at the moment, updates!, Only a radically new OS that looks and works like a next generation OS will find success. Bring on the Holodeck OS already! THATS what you call an OS!
