Good news from the kingdom of Redmond, fellow geeks; we've finally been given a more precise (though still not as precise as one could get) release date for Windows 7, the next operating system to come from Microsoft. Word comes from a PressPass article, and while it may be vague, it's still official.Bill Veghte, who is senior vice president of the Windows Business at Microsoft, stated, "With early RC testing and extensive partner feedback we've received, Windows 7 is tracking well for holiday availability." This sits well with Acer's prediction (or maybe more than a prediction) that Windows 7 will hit shelves October 23rd, but it was pretty widely accepted that we'll see the new operating system by the end of the year anyway. Whether Acer's date is valid or not, who knows, but it very well could be.
Good news, and expect more to be available shortly on the matter (hopefully). As usual, you'll be able to find it right here on Neowin.

Same here and I thought the pubic beta worked wonderfully too! I am a little surprised they are waiting so long. I would think that they could release July or August if they wanted to, but I guess they want to take it slow to make sure the OEMs and developers have time to test drivers and compatibility. If the GA release is December then the probably means it will go gold sometime in October, I plan on installing it as soon as I can get it off TechNet!
End of July RTM, so that OEMs can have it in hand long enough for a Sep/Oct product cycle in time for Holiday release.
Which is what I've been saying here since last year...
Do you want a cookie?
Do you want a cookie? It will happen when it happens really. Not sure it matters all that much to most us (besides the desire to have it in RTM), except those who own MS stock...
Enough! You're not going to become famous off a very easy prediction.
XP RC1 was out on June 29, 2001. The OS was done on August 24. So if this testing period for Win7 lasts no more than, say three months, it should be done by no later than the end of July.
Actually, I already AM famous. 8P
But every time Neowin posts yet another NON-timetable article, I'm going to post the real timetable so everyone has the REAL information instead of the spin.
You're welcome. Now where's my damn cookie!?
Windows 7 is the new XP!!!
Windows 7 is the new XP!!!
No, Windows 7 is Vista Second Edition. The same idea is being applied here, just like when Windows 98 came out!
Windows 7 is the new XP!!!
Windows 7 is going to be a malware haven full of holes and bad performance after a week of use? I sure hope not.
Windows 7 is the new XP!!!

You must not make very much money.... what this costs will probably set me back a days paycheck.
P1R4T3 obviously has a budget and is trying to follow it. Refrain from putting someone down by boasting about yourself.
What sort of bugs are you experiencing exactly?
My only problems were drivers related and I'm not dumb enough to blame the OS for that. All my programs are working properly, zero issues. Heck, even an almost 10 years old game (Diablo 2) is working flawlessly.
You say you go as far back as 3.11 so you're actually implying that Win 7 is a more disappointing release than WinME? Seriously?

It never worked...
That has absolutely nothing to do with Windows 7.
did I say it did?
I've never heard of that edition of Windows 7, you must have made it up...
I understand you are trying to say Windows 7 should be referred to as Windows Vista Second Edition, but, by that logic, we would never have gotten past Windows 1.0. It'd be something like "Windows 1.0 R9" and Windows Vista would not even exist, let alone your made up "Windows Vista Second Edition".
This is nothing like Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE. Windows 7 contains many improvements over Windows Vista, but not just in bug fixes, performance improvements and compatibility issues, it has also introduced a fair few new features and improved consistency. I suggest you read up a bit about Windows 7 and maybe try it out? It's obvious you haven't yet.

I have Windows 7, and I do see improvement, but nothing to get to excited about. I actually did not make this up (Windows Vista Second Edition), I was actually quoting an article from a periodical, perhaps you need to read! And I stand by what I wrote, if you recall when Windows 98 came out, then Windows 98 Second Edition, it was revealed with vast improvements, so what is the difference? Windows 7 is essentially a improvement over Vista - the exact same idea applies here!

screw retail, just give me rtm
This article is about Windows 7, which is the next version of Windows after Windows Vista. I don't even think there is such a thing as Windows Vista SE?

Will never happen. Especially since anyone can test it.
Then, I tried Windows 7 RC. Thinking it is just like Vista rebrand, Ok let's try. Within 5 minutes, I
"scream" silently Oh my GOD. Windows 7 is extremely good and advanced OS. It is even better and faster than Vista. UAC is less annoyed and less prompt. It works so intelligently that I wished M$ could make that for Vista. Folders browsing pop out on my old 1gb ram laptop like instant, no more wait like in Vista (a few delays), and completely superior than WinXP (wait for ages). The whole machine run cooler than Vista. The fan is turn on less often because the CPU doesn;t need it to cool off. And many more and more things to say.
Anyways, I thought I have seen and use all including the annoying, awkwardly-designed OSX (you know what I mean by saying that if you have the same opinions like me). Windows 7 promises something great to come. You skeptics should not miss out this. You need an upgrade seriously. By the way, I am not working for M$ to write these.
Don't worry. You didn't say anything useful.
They need more time to add some "special" useless features?!!
Being that Windows 7 is just an update of Vista code, there should be no need for manufacturers to test it, though I can see that the XP mode has the potential for another fall-out between CPU manufacturers, hardware suppliers and the company.
Windows 7 business editions, may just have the killer app. with "XP mode" virtual machine, my palms have started to itch, with that!
a slight change from a patch can break programs
let alone full blown OS
