Update: Microsoft have confirmed the shut downs will commence on July 1st and not June 1st as stated in the reminder emails.

Now that we're all waiting for the final version of Windows 7 to be released later this year, there are some important dates to remember if you're still using Windows 7 Beta 1. If you downloaded and installed Windows 7 Beta 1 build 7000 back in January, your computer is going to start shutting down every two hours starting June 1st, 2009 until August 1st, 2009 when your computer will become non-functional.
Microsoft sent a e-mail to all participants in the public beta stating:

"We're sending this mail to remind you that Windows 7 Release candidate is available and to make sure you plan ahead for when the Beta expires on August 1, 2009. On June 1, 2009, the PC you're using to test the Beta will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will send you a notice a couple of weeks in advance, and that'd be the ideal time to rebuild your test PC with a non-expired version of Windows, such as the RC or Windows Vista. This will be a clean installation, so be ready to reinstall your programs and data."

With that said it is highly recommended that you download and install the release candidate (RC) that Microsoft released a few weeks ago. Download and upgrade instructions can be found here. The RC build that is available for public download will expire on June 1st, 2010. Just as the Beta 1 release, the RC build will start shutting down your computer every two hours on March 1st, 2010.

What has changed from Beta 1 to RC? Can my system run Windows 7?

According to the Windows Blog, this will start on JULY 1st, 2009.

For Beta, bi-hourly shutdowns will begin July 1st, 2009. You will be alerted to install a released version of Windows and your PC will shut down automatically every 2 hours. On August 1st, 2009 if you are still on the Windows 7 Beta your license for the Windows 7 Beta will expire and the non-genuine experience is triggered where your wallpaper is removed and "This copy of Windows is not genuine" will be displayed in the lower right corner above the taskbar.
#4.1 excalpius on 25 May 2009 - 03:15
Maybe they should call this something other than "the non-genuine experience"? I meant, these betas ARE genuine. Maybe they could use a simple English, non Bushco era doublespeak phrase like, "Expired Mode" or something?
#4.2 Quick Reply on 25 May 2009 - 10:19
Well if your license has expired, then it has become non-genuine because you are not licensed to use this version anymore. What would be the point in renaming it just for a Beta? Expired Mode and Non-Genuine mode would be identical.

Wait, I'm using the Build 7100 RC so my computer wont restart until 2010?
#5.1 skynetXrules on 24 May 2009 - 23:08
correct.
#5.2 GreyWolfSC on 24 May 2009 - 23:48
You can restart it yourself before then, of course.

Shutdowns every 2 hours...I mean, really, what genius thought of that idea. If they want people to stop using the thing, just expire the damn thing.
#6.1 rakeshishere on 24 May 2009 - 23:39
I heard Ballmer gave a promotion to whoever gave this new idea
#6.2 GreyWolfSC on 24 May 2009 - 23:48
It's to give you enough time to remove any data on the computer you might want.
#6.3 burnblue on 25 May 2009 - 01:59
A genius that I would buy dinner if I saw him/her. How can you possibly prefer your PC just permanently becoming inaccessible to a situation where you're reminded that you're on borrowed time?

I'd be very ticked off if I was locked off from my important work because I forgot the expiration date.

Important work on a beta build. Hmmm.

Please correct this article. July 1st is the correct date for Beta 1. You almost gave me a heart attack!
#7.1 excalpius on 25 May 2009 - 03:16
+1

BTW, the editors want you to use the "report a problem" link at the top of the page for stuff like this.

The article is correct, according to the email I received from Microsoft today regarding the Beta 1 expiration date. It will start shutting down every 2 hours on June 1st, and will expire on August 1st.

The article is correct, this e-mail was sent out to everyone who got a key for Beta 1. Unless Microsoft updates us on this date, this is where it stands as far as we can tell.
#7.4 rieuwa on 26 May 2009 - 00:17
Well, clearly there is an error somewhere. I got my copy of Beta 1 off MSDN and received no e-mail regarding this. Thank you for investigating.

There is a workaround, its called RC1
#9 burnblue on 25 May 2009 - 02:00
I didn't think about this, guess it's time to move on to the RC
#10 Caveman-ugh on 25 May 2009 - 04:44
That is probably why they are allowng such a long time for people to download and install the Release Candidate.
#11 ozgeek on 25 May 2009 - 05:17
I wonder why people are still on Beta 1 when there's no excuse not to try out RC. The beta is so old.
#12 bbfc_uk on 25 May 2009 - 09:35
Really, you should not be using the Beta since the RC was released a few weeks ago. Its far more stable.
(1 reply) #13 +Pajter on 25 May 2009 - 10:47
Just to be sure, I'm using build 7100. It was released just before the RC. Does this count as Beta 1? Will I need to upgrade to the RC build? (which I don't think is very different from 7100)
#13.1 bbfc_uk on 25 May 2009 - 11:01
No, you are using the same build as the RC, you were just impatient like me!

Guess I need to upgrade my dad's laptop for him before he starts losing work thanks to this stupid 2 hour limit.
#14.1 Delmont on 25 May 2009 - 12:52
How is it stupid? You're running a BETA version!!!

And why would anyone being doing actual production work on a BETA version?

And why would not you have put the RC version on your Dad's laptop by now instead of the BETA version?

See a common theme here? BETA

Because it is.
Because Vista is horrendous, and XP is incompatible with the hardware.
Because I couldn't be bothered. The beta works fine.
Thanks for the tip.

Vista is not horrendous. I've been running it for 2 years without any issues. Rock solid for me, not sure what your issues are .

My issues are poor boot up time video driver issues. Having the video bork every time you play AOE2 gets a little bit boring after the fifth time.
#15 Nashy on 25 May 2009 - 12:56
Why shouldn't people be doing production work?

MS needs people to use the computer as if it were a normal day. No wonder Vista had bugs if all the Beta users just looked at it and though "Gee, this is pretty. Anyway, back to XP for some word processing".
#16 Sadelwo on 25 May 2009 - 13:51
Just do what you would with a finalized OS, regular backups.

Wouldn't it be amusing to just see it happen?

Itz been over an hour of nothingness... You're reading this comment and thinking of 4 things you haven't already said about me only 'cause they don't rhyme... And poof!

:reboot::Vista™:how the hell do you work this taskbar?

Quick question then .. RC is obviously referring to 7100 ..

What about 7127?
#18.1 Jugalator on 28 May 2009 - 14:01
I think those builds use the RC expiry dates.
#19 Evolution on 26 May 2009 - 14:35
What if we upgraded from a beta to RC ?e
