Microsoft drops Kumo, rebrands to Bing

Microsoft has officially dropped the codename "Kumo" from its rebranding of its Live Search to help compete against search engine giant Google, by giving Live Search a new name. The newest name will be "Bing" instead of "Kumo". The new ad campaign will be placed on TV, radio, Internet, newspapers and other media to outlets with the new branding.

The new $80 to $100 million ad campaign, according to AdvertisingAge, will not directly attack Google, Yahoo, or even Ask.com by name, but instead "Bing" ads will try to convince users to use "today's search engines".

Microsoft believes they have the edge in the new search engine, indicating that 42% of all first query searches need to be refined. Bing promises to help cut down on users search time by adding related categories to help users find exactly what their looking for.

The related search categories would help users who may be looking for a new car or a cell phone, linking users with reviews, prices, and much more related to the searched product. The new search categories will help win over some users when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announces "Bing" for the first time at All Things D which runs through May 26 through 28.

Kumo was a better name. The name "Bing" alone is enough to make me want to stick with Google.

Kumo sounds the best out of all 3. Bing sounds retarded. Live is alright, but irritates me because they have Xbox Live.

Don't judge names too quickly. After "Revolution", everybody thought "Wii" was a horrible name but eventually we got used to it. It's always the same thing with "original" brandings, you hate them and then you get used to them.

PS : Actually if the roles were inversed you could as well say "The name Google alone is enough to make me want to stick with Bing". There is nothing genuinely cool about google, it's just a name that you got used to say.

I personally liked "Live Search", not sure why they changed it...

It's part of MS's pitiful attempt at reinventing itself. It will be over soon, and a few people at MS are going to be fired.

"Bong" sounds way way better than "Bing".

This of course may be true for you, but it is not true for me. I did not "get used to" the name Wii. Nor did I "get used to" the name Google. I don't particularly like the name Wii, nor have I ever. That won't change.

There was no "getting used to" the name Google for me. It never bothered me to begin with.

This name however, bothers me. It reminds me of Chandler's last name on Friends. I loved that character, but in no way do I associate Bing to anything search related. Or even Internet related for that matter. "I'm Binging!" *rolls eyes* They need to think of a better name.

No one associated the words Google or Yahoo to the internet till they became widespread and used by everyone. How does "Google" as a word mean anything specific to the internet? Or Yahoo?

In comparison names like YouTube or MySpace fit way better on the internet than google does.

Sure you maybe not have a problem with those names, as many won't have and don't care about the name Bing either.

I never said Google was associated with anything Internet related. I simply said Bing was not associated to anything.

bing.com is already registered to Microsoft.

It was registered in 1996. They don't think that far ahead, obviously. This must have been part of a blanket name acquisition back in the land-grab days.

BING it.

Sounds full of fail.

Kumo it sounded better.

I can imagine it now! Couple years from now, we're all running around and
'bing it',
'look it up on bing',
'why don't you bing it?',
'bring it for urself'
'go on bing'

Hell! they might just as well go with 'bomb'

#4.1 +Smigit on 26 May 2009 - 01:42
Google, Yahoo!, MSN are all rather poor names in terms of meaning much or anything really. In the end of the day it just has to be memorable and Bing is no better or worse than the others in that regard.

Exactly, That's what everyone is missing here. Though out of the 3, MSN does have more meaning behind it when you think about it. Yahoo and Google? It's just something everyone can remember, good or not, you don't forget them easy. And that's the whole point.

Rightly or wrongly, Google has become part of our everyday language... e.g "I Googled it" - who's going to say "I Binged for it"? It just sounds wrong!
#8.1 Calum on 26 May 2009 - 01:53
"I binged it", "Go bing it", "Let me bing that for you".

I think those phrases are catchy enough. It's a better name than 'Google' or 'Yahoo!' in my opinion.

you know what, back in 1999 people said 'use a search engine' , and people thought that 'googling something' sounded wrong...
#9 TSO on 26 May 2009 - 00:35
I don't really care what they call it, unless they refine the search in a way that it displays the same or better results than google already does, I won't be using it.
#10 exotoxic on 26 May 2009 - 01:06

Live Search > Bing > Kumo

That's my opinion. Live Search is already stuck in my head (though it's not that great), Bing sounds like a correct answer on a game show: BING!, and Kumo just sounds dumb.

I can think of much better ones than those.
#11.1 Calum on 26 May 2009 - 01:54
Exactly? The correct answer on a gameshow - "BING!". Finding the correct and relevant search results - "BING!".

Makes sense to me...

EDIT - Obviously that is if it does what it promised and is more relevant

Kumo is dumb? Of all the search engine names, it was the only one that actually seemed to match the service offered. Words like 'Google' and 'Bing' don't relate to looking for or finding anything, but kumo was at least a simple pun that meant both cloud and spider. It, at the very least, made sense.

Might be! You never know! lol. Anyway, I can definitely see a lot of puns and great jokes with this name! At least it will be good for a few laughs, lol. I know this will probably sound stupid, but if we need to find information on Orange Juice, we can "Bing O"!

"Kumo it!"
"Google it!"
"Bing it!"

Kumo ends with a vowel when pronounced and that sucks whereas the e of Google is silent and doesn't suck.

I'll wait for an official announcement. Just last week, on May 22, the Trademark Office rejected Microsoft's application to trademark "Bing". I wish they could reject applications for stupidity, but no, it was rejected because it's similar to another trademark. Bing is hands down one of the stupidest names ever for a product. And the reality is they probably paid a lot of money to a branding company to come up with it... Kumo is much cooler sounding. And to the person who drew parallels to Nintendo choosing Wii as a name -- we've accepted Wii as a name but it's still incredibly stupid and will forever be the but of jokes...
#39 flash_flicker on 26 May 2009 - 16:24
don't know why but i love it i don't mind saying that you should bing it instead of google it !!
