Microsoft has officially dropped the codename "Kumo" from its rebranding of its Live Search to help compete against search engine giant Google, by giving Live Search a new name. The newest name will be "Bing" instead of "Kumo". The new ad campaign will be placed on TV, radio, Internet, newspapers and other media to outlets with the new branding. The new $80 to $100 million ad campaign, according to AdvertisingAge, will not directly attack Google, Yahoo, or even Ask.com by name, but instead "Bing" ads will try to convince users to use "today's search engines".
Microsoft believes they have the edge in the new search engine, indicating that 42% of all first query searches need to be refined. Bing promises to help cut down on users search time by adding related categories to help users find exactly what their looking for.
The related search categories would help users who may be looking for a new car or a cell phone, linking users with reviews, prices, and much more related to the searched product. The new search categories will help win over some users when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announces "Bing" for the first time at All Things D which runs through May 26 through 28.

Kumo sounds the best out of all 3. Bing sounds retarded. Live is alright, but irritates me because they have Xbox Live.
PS : Actually if the roles were inversed you could as well say "The name Google alone is enough to make me want to stick with Bing". There is nothing genuinely cool about google, it's just a name that you got used to say.
Well, it'll bring in a certain demographic then
It's part of MS's pitiful attempt at reinventing itself. It will be over soon, and a few people at MS are going to be fired.

This of course may be true for you, but it is not true for me. I did not "get used to" the name Wii. Nor did I "get used to" the name Google. I don't particularly like the name Wii, nor have I ever. That won't change.
There was no "getting used to" the name Google for me. It never bothered me to begin with.
This name however, bothers me. It reminds me of Chandler's last name on Friends. I loved that character, but in no way do I associate Bing to anything search related. Or even Internet related for that matter. "I'm Binging!" *rolls eyes* They need to think of a better name.

Maybe Microsoft means Bing-BLING and chi-chang
I'm not used to it...Wii is still a stupid name.

No one associated the words Google or Yahoo to the internet till they became widespread and used by everyone. How does "Google" as a word mean anything specific to the internet? Or Yahoo?
In comparison names like YouTube or MySpace fit way better on the internet than google does.
Sure you maybe not have a problem with those names, as many won't have and don't care about the name Bing either.
Same.
You know though, if they're not going to use www.kumo.com they can give me the domain, ^.^

I never said Google was associated with anything Internet related. I simply said Bing was not associated to anything.

Sounds full of fail.
Kumo it sounded better.
'bing it',
'look it up on bing',
'why don't you bing it?',
'bring it for urself'
'go on bing'
Hell! they might just as well go with 'bomb'

You forgot "bing me up billy" :p.
LOL nice one!
Exactly, That's what everyone is missing here. Though out of the 3, MSN does have more meaning behind it when you think about it. Yahoo and Google? It's just something everyone can remember, good or not, you don't forget them easy. And that's the whole point.
I think those phrases are catchy enough. It's a better name than 'Google' or 'Yahoo!' in my opinion.
you know what, back in 1999 people said 'use a search engine' , and people thought that 'googling something' sounded wrong...
That's my opinion. Live Search is already stuck in my head (though it's not that great), Bing sounds like a correct answer on a game show: BING!, and Kumo just sounds dumb.
I can think of much better ones than those.
Makes sense to me...
EDIT - Obviously that is if it does what it promised and is more relevant

Kumo is dumb? Of all the search engine names, it was the only one that actually seemed to match the service offered. Words like 'Google' and 'Bing' don't relate to looking for or finding anything, but kumo was at least a simple pun that meant both cloud and spider. It, at the very least, made sense.
Might be! You never know! lol. Anyway, I can definitely see a lot of puns and great jokes with this name! At least it will be good for a few laughs, lol.
It'll just be "Bing"
Maybe they're finally realising

then what about their 80 to 100 million dollar ad campaign?
google gets popularity from word of mouth, people saying "ill google that"
just about everyone who things "ill bing that" the first time will think something dirty or think the person is a nut
So has Google.
"Google it!"
"Bing it!"
Kumo ends with a vowel when pronounced and that sucks whereas the e of Google is silent and doesn't suck.

hahaha
I can only think about chandler when i hear this
Lol, I was thinking the same!
Bing just makes me think of cheap, tackiness such as bingo websites etc.
Bing seems a bit of short name for a Microsoft product doesn't it?
How about Microsoft Windows Live Bing Search 2009 Standard Edition?
