Microsoft has released a standalone installer for Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 today.

The software giant posted some things to know about the service packs last month, one of the warnings is if "vLite" was used to customize your Windows Vista installation, you may have removed required system components which prevent Service Pack 2 from installing. Microsoft has a workaround for this issue.

Microsoft is expected to post the bits to Windows Update in the coming weeks but if you are eager to install SP2 today then the download links are listed below.

Service packs where never meant to be exciting though. Just a rollup of all the patches to date and some other tweaks.

Nothing big like XP SP2 will ever happen again.

Depends, if you are a business/corp, you wait until SP1 of an OS, generally speaking. That sort of makes a SP exciting LOL.

Because XP pre-SP2 was such a joke that Microsoft basically gave us a whole new Second Edition-esque OS for free.

No, because Vista was taking longer then expected and they needed something to stop people switching to OSX/Linux etc XP SP2 only happened* because they cocked up the Vista development (so badly they restarted it half way through). It will never happen again because MS can't afford it to.

* = What I mean to say is, there still would of been a SP2 (and 3 for that matter) but if Vista was on schedule, XP SP2 would of been more like XP SP3 and most of the features added would of remained in Vista only.

I think you both have elements right, but XP *needed* the security overhaul in SP2, regardless of whether Vista was to have been released about the same time.

This will keep me happy till Windows 7 hits RTM

EDIT:
Microsoft will release Windows Vista SP2 to the Download Center and through Windows Update on May 26, 2009. Automatic Updates are scheduled to begin on June 30, 2009

Why so late? o.O

I currently have pre-release build 6002, how dangerous is it to uninstall that release and re-install this new build?
Or how dangerous is it to do an over the top install?

Uninstall the old beta and then install the new one, that's the way it's always been

I just wonder why they don't release it to Windows Update?

If you get the standalone it is 302MB
If you get the SP via Windows update it is about 43-47MB.

So, release it via Windows Update. I'd like to get just what I need and not the entire standalone.
#17.1 GreyWolfSC on 26 May 2009 - 15:23
They will. They just want to make sure any unforeseen problems don't crop up before they send it to everyone automatically.
#17.2 Delmont on 26 May 2009 - 15:25
Are you going to the standalone or wait for the Windows Update?

remember this is the first SP in hystory that it's no cumulative... you need SP1 installed before.
The best way is to download the MSDN ISO with SP2 integrated (you can check the SHA-1 to check if it's genuine) so you'll have a clean installation with SP2 built-in. much more speedy and clean.
#18.1 Lord Zog on 26 May 2009 - 13:40

#18.3 GreyWolfSC on 26 May 2009 - 15:24
NT 4 service packs had to be installed one at a time in order, then some had to be reinstalled. This is cake comparatively.
#18.4 mazzy80 on 26 May 2009 - 19:23
you don't need MSDN login... the ISO's are on the torrent from the end of April.

SP2 removes the limit of 10 half open outbound TCP connections. By default, SP2 has no limit on the number of half open outbound TCP connections.

They changed it back?

Yes. They added a registry key to control it too so you can turn it back on if you want.

If you were waiting for SP2 to upgrade to Vista, then you might as well wait for Win7. A service pack shouldn't make much difference to your choice.

Kinda sucks if you did a vLite install. You have to either "upgrade" or fresh install.

at torrent's way... look for MSDN ISO, and check the SHA-1 with the msdn website.
you can't slipstream the SP just like with XP/2k in a supported way.

Vista SP2 runs great. No problems here!
#27 eilegz on 26 May 2009 - 17:41
i have sp1 fully patched, with 1.3 gb free space (only have 80gb laptop so its hard to change the hard drive plus i dont have $, anyways downloaded the thing and 999 mb free space, run the install and it ask me to have 3GB OF FREE SPACE to install a SP?, seriously its outrageous how much bloat can be there, i guess that the setup its not "intelligent" to install only the new things, lets see if Windows Update version. but seriously i think that microsoft want really to screw the few people that get vista over XP, with all this.

Seriously, what is the problem with 340 MB? I'm sure you have enough space.
#29.4 eilegz on 26 May 2009 - 20:06
the problem its that since its the same standalone installer it will still ask me the 3GB free that i dont have just to install this.

this SP seems to be going backwards to Nt4 era in annoyance
#29.5 Xam_Remny on 26 May 2009 - 20:13
Annoying? Not at all. Trust me, freeing 3 GB is worth the effort. It improves a lot of things. Took about 30 min to install on my laptop.

I will install Vista SP2 soon, but I have to uninstall Yahoo messenger, and IE8 first, so I want to refresh the Internet Explorer 8 and Yahoo Messenger 9. I knew that Yahoo Messenger always crash many times on this Window Vista SP1 often. I hope it will work on Windows Vista SP2 soon.

I want to add something: YOu have to install service pack in the safe mode which it is best one than regular (non-safe mode). I had problem with Windows XP SP1 before, because of bad virus and internet blocks.

Weird. Just saw the SP2 listed in Windows Update. got about 5% into the download and quit (error). After about 5 minutes or retries and errors, it now says it's not needed.

What's up with that?

I have installed SP2 rc on my computer and I ran spcompcln to remove all SP1 files, now when I tried to install SP2 final version, it said the pre-release version exists, need to remove it first, but as I followed the guidance provided by ms by using appwiz.cpl to check the installed updates, I can not remove sp2 rc version.

So is there any other methods I can install SP2 final version?

Installed SP2. Everything seems to be running fine, can't really notice any differences other than it seems like some webpages load a little slower... though that could just be the webpages fault.

Bitdefender Antivirus 2009 reported me SP2 as Gen:Trojan.Heur.9242DB4242 when I was installing

(I DL from Microsoft website)

I have to disable it

But everything's fine SP2 is more stable than SP1, in my opinion.

See: http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/5259/sp2vista.jpg

kwangkung86, report the Vista SP2 "false positive" to the makers of Bitdefender Antivirus 2009 so that they can update their virus detection files.

I've installed Vista SP2 on the Dell Inspiron laptop with pre-installed Vista Home Basic Edition (updated it to SP1 first before updating to SP2) and everything worked great.
#40 kwangkung86 on 27 May 2009 - 19:32
Many Thanks to erpster3 for recommendation, I just sent those files to Bitdefender Labs already. Hope bitdefender labs to fix that
