Microsoft has released a standalone installer for Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 today. The software giant posted some things to know about the service packs last month, one of the warnings is if "vLite" was used to customize your Windows Vista installation, you may have removed required system components which prevent Service Pack 2 from installing. Microsoft has a workaround for this issue.
Microsoft is expected to post the bits to Windows Update in the coming weeks but if you are eager to install SP2 today then the download links are listed below.

I was thinking of waiting for windows update to install SP2, but I cant wait for WEEKS.
no just informing you. haha you though i was putting you down. no way. you guys are great!
yeah Win7 has stolen most of Vista Sp2's thunder...and rightly so
Nothing big like XP SP2 will ever happen again.
Depends, if you are a business/corp, you wait until SP1 of an OS, generally speaking. That sort of makes a SP exciting LOL.
Nothing big like XP SP2 will ever happen again.
Because XP pre-SP2 was such a joke that Microsoft basically gave us a whole new Second Edition-esque OS for free.

No, because Vista was taking longer then expected and they needed something to stop people switching to OSX/Linux etc
* = What I mean to say is, there still would of been a SP2 (and 3 for that matter) but if Vista was on schedule, XP SP2 would of been more like XP SP3 and most of the features added would of remained in Vista only.

I think you both have elements right, but XP *needed* the security overhaul in SP2, regardless of whether Vista was to have been released about the same time.
EDIT:
Why so late? o.O

otherwise glad to see its released

I can still use my custom themes after installing this SP2.
I use vistaglazz 1.1 and it stills works with SP2 I have no idea why, but I try several times to change themes without any problem.
Its 6.0.6002.18005
Who said SP2 wasn't exciting enough?
Doubtful.
Or how dangerous is it to do an over the top install?

Uninstall the old beta and then install the new one, that's the way it's always been
If you get the standalone it is 302MB
If you get the SP via Windows update it is about 43-47MB.
So, release it via Windows Update. I'd like to get just what I need and not the entire standalone.
The best way is to download the MSDN ISO with SP2 integrated (you can check the SHA-1 to check if it's genuine) so you'll have a clean installation with SP2 built-in. much more speedy and clean.

Can I borrow your MSDN login/password then? lol j/k
They changed it back?
Why?
To keep corporate users from overloading the WAN connection?
If you were waiting for SP2 to upgrade to Vista, then you might as well wait for Win7. A service pack shouldn't make much difference to your choice.
"Methods"
you can't slipstream the SP just like with XP/2k in a supported way.
was your system fully updated when you installed the SP2?
yes, everything even windows search 4 and last month patch tuesday patches, everything its fully updated so i expected a 40 to 60 mb patch from windows update.

this SP seems to be going backwards to Nt4 era in annoyance
I want to add something: YOu have to install service pack in the safe mode which it is best one than regular (non-safe mode). I had problem with Windows XP SP1 before, because of bad virus and internet blocks.

It should work under Vista SP2. I'll test it out later today.
What's up with that?
So is there any other methods I can install SP2 final version?
(I DL from Microsoft website)
I have to disable it
But everything's fine SP2 is more stable than SP1, in my opinion.

I've installed Vista SP2 on the Dell Inspiron laptop with pre-installed Vista Home Basic Edition (updated it to SP1 first before updating to SP2) and everything worked great.
