Windows 7 build 7201 leaks

Advertisement (Why?)
Another week and another Windows 7 leak. Last week 7137 leaked and this week it is 7201's turn.

This time around the build tag is 7201.0.winmain_win7ids_sp.090601-2255 meaning this build is only 3 days old. As ever the build is available at the usual places.

Microsoft Netherlands employee Ruud de Jonge twittered "Installing Win 7 build 7201" a few moments ago to confirm the builds authenticity.

Microsoft revealed yesterday that it will sign off final RTM code in mid to late July with a general availability and release date of 22nd October for Windows 7.

Only at miniature nova so far... and it says "Italian" there? Also, only one torrent for x86 and x64?

Anyway, nice to see it sooner already than expected.

Neowin, i never felt such sorrow in my life, since you gave up about the idea of a PLUMBER.

bring back he plumber jokes, at least that was fresh in the "same old news about the well intended leak series."

you should stretch it until september at least.

Beware as most unofficial builds have malware/unwanted packages inside them. As most of the "change logs" concern minor bugs I don't think the risk outways the benefits from RC1
#3.1 xendrome on 03 Jun 2009 - 17:25
That is false, there was like 1 or to builds that someone hacked together and installed extra spyware crap in them.

"Most" unofficial builds are clean.
#3.2 excalpius on 03 Jun 2009 - 20:24
Agreed with xendrome. Please don't spread FUD, po134.
#3.3 rm20010 on 03 Jun 2009 - 20:28
All it takes is one simple hash verification from people who report getting clean builds.

I wonder if they are going to change the UI colors a bit to distinguish Windows 7 from Windows Vista. As great as the OS is, if people don't immediately see differences, they may write it off.

I say they should fill the glass (aero) with water!!!

So this is RC2???
#7.1 dbam987 on 03 Jun 2009 - 17:24
Nope... why would Microsoft need to make another RC? Build 7100 works magnificantly, and the RTM is due out in October, so there's little time in between for another public release.
#7.2 Digix on 03 Jun 2009 - 17:33
ady199 said,

No there has never been and never will be an RC2. Look at the build string it's branched development away from winmain for service pack development which is irrelevant to main build. It's most likely 7200 is RTM.
#7.3 Dane on 03 Jun 2009 - 17:34
ady199 said,

There will be NO other RC Build. It's going from RC 1 to RTM, with minor builds in between that are to go to internal people, or TAP, they'll get leaked. The next official one will be RTM.
#7.4 Jugalator on 03 Jun 2009 - 18:35
Microsoft IS building a sort of "RC Refresh" for internal use, and close partners, so in a sense one could a bit sloppily call it an "RC2", but it won't be public, hence why Sinofsky earlier told us that there won't be an RC2.

I'm not sure if this build is that build though. It'll be distributed in June 11, according to wz.
#7.5 excalpius on 03 Jun 2009 - 20:26
There is and will be no public RC2. You can call internal builds whatever you want until RTM, and then anything after that is the SP1 branch, as others above have mentioned.
(1 reply) #8 LAMj on 03 Jun 2009 - 17:24
wasn't this announced fake over other win7 sites?
#8.1 l33txp on 03 Jun 2009 - 18:31
Possibly.. but how many have been announced fake that were real? Yeah... they fail.
#9 rakeshishere on 03 Jun 2009 - 17:50
AS RTM is getting closer, the leaks are happening pretty soon (this one is 3days old). I'll expect RTM build to leak in just hours after it has been created

Windows 7 RC1 is buggy as hell, actually it sucks and i tested on numerous machines. I am glas MS is doing this. Latest build i tried was 7137 which works much much better then 7100. MS is on right track with this self called RC2
#10.1 +lcg on 03 Jun 2009 - 18:17
Could you elaborate on why Windows 7 RC1 is buggy? It's rock solid for me.

Self called RC2? What the hell is everyone on about with RC2! Its internal build numbers all the way now until RTM, whatever the build for that may be, artificially incremented or not. Why do you think that 7201, not even the fan-rumoured "7200 will be RC2!!!" build - is another release candidate?

lcg said,

It's very buggy.. It send me Hardware Error on the insalation, and it happened the same to a friend. Windows 7 Build 7077 it's solid rock, but a friend said me that i must upgrade or in august i can't use it anymore.
(3 replies) #11 jjrambo on 03 Jun 2009 - 18:06
Windows 7 7201 build could be actually RTM if no significant bugs are found.
#11.1 rev23dev on 03 Jun 2009 - 19:58
daily builds will continue to happen i'm sure.
#11.2 excalpius on 03 Jun 2009 - 20:29
Actually the big issue is driver delivery. And while they are still waiting for as many final 7 drivers as they can update/cram in there, they'll keep fixing bugs on a daily basis as rev23dev said.

So, even if the OS is done enough for 99% of people now, you can still expect the RTM middle to end of next month.
#11.3 excalpius on 04 Jun 2009 - 12:25
Note that nvidia is getting closer. The 186 series beta leaked today and that has the new DX support for 7. Soooooo close now.... 8D
#12 jjrambo on 03 Jun 2009 - 18:10
I have my high hopes for Windows 7, it seems that MS is doing things right this time.
#13 +lcg on 03 Jun 2009 - 18:19
Windows 7 looks very promising. For the time being I'm sticking with RC1, but I'm interested in seeing what bug fixes and other improvements have been made in Windows 7 build 7201.

Quick question, when a new build leaks do you have to reinstall Win7 over agian? If so that seems pretty dumb to me.

Yes, changes could be made to any part of the filesystem, kernel, GUI, etc. and updating could cause a lot of problems. A fresh install is the only way to truly experience the OS.

as for installing it over the current Win7 version there surely is a way.

BS. Upgrades work fine unless you are anal retentive. Not sure? Make a disk image before the upgrade as a fallback.
#21.4 Fagutish on 03 Jun 2009 - 22:43
I agree with this course of action generally but i took one of my main computers and upgraded furiously. From Vista SP1 to 7000 to 7032 to 7048 to 7057 to 7068 to 7100. seriously. and it worked perfectly. I had absolutley 0 problems with it. as long as you get rid of daemon and anti virus before upgrading things go smoothly.

Your mileage may vary but it beats formatting for me. Its a risk obviously.
#21.5 s1k3sT on 04 Jun 2009 - 13:02
Why do people insist on upgrading or formating? You can do a clean install without formating, and the installer will move all your old data to a Windows.old directory. I've heard upgrading takes hours...

The only thing I'm wondering is why the sudden jump in build numbers? We went from 7137 on May 21st to 7201 on June 1st. The only other times we've had massive build number jumps were at Beta 1 and RC. Maybe that is why people are insisting on calling this RC2.
#37.1 starsky2 on 04 Jun 2009 - 18:14
I heard they choose favourite numbers from coworkers and make the build number.
#38 ChrisJ1968 on 04 Jun 2009 - 16:40
I think MS is quietly polishing up Win7 bcz next month Win7 , by the news here states it will RTM next month
#39 cchance on 04 Jun 2009 - 17:03
thebuild sjumped because the branches split ....

microsoft branched of 7100 for RC1, and 7200 towards the rtm branch 7100's were basically small fixes for rc1 to be released while 72xx continued active development and polishing etc. is how i understand it.

Installing this build is kinda of silly at this stage with RTM so close and so little changing in these builds.

I've just spotted they have brought back My Documents, My Pictures, My Videos, and My Music. I thought they had dropped the "My" tag back in Vista? The "My" prefix is still dropped in Libraries, not noticed it before 7201.
#42.1 kl33per on 08 Jun 2009 - 08:14
This is to distinguish between the "Documents" library (which by default includes both public and personal documents), and your personal documents directory.
