We should find out in just a few short hours some details on the new iPhone as Apple started the WWDC today. However, a recent Apple leak, via John Gruber at Daring Fireball, says the new iPhone has been codenamed "3GS."

While this is only a codename, and may or may not be the final name of the device, Gruber's prediction is this will be the official name as well. However, Gruber says "I have no idea what the S stands for." [Ed: Second Generation?]

More predictions Gruber drops on us include:
  • Apple will probably keep the current 3G products for sale, probably at a reduced price, for the foreseeable future.
  • The 3GS will have the same dimensions as the 3G so existing cases should fit the 3GS.
  • The 3GS will feature 15-20 percent longer battery life than the iPhone 3G, however it's not clear if this is due to an increase in capacity or because of software tweaks.
  • There is an Apple tablet in the works, but it's not coming out yet.
Keep an eye on Neowin today, as we watch the announcements coming out of WWDC.

Update: Apple has just announced the final name for the new iPhone, and it is indeed 3GS. The S, according to Apple, stands for speed.

I would assume battery life...
#4 BoDEAN on 08 Jun 2009 - 15:14
yawn. I doubt this iphone will get the hype it did when it first came out. Think that has long died off.
#5 Marshalus on 08 Jun 2009 - 15:15
Yes battery life. Sorry.
#6 +veritas310 on 08 Jun 2009 - 15:15
It's battery life , new OLED screen (doesn't require backlight).

I gotta say, the fact that they've had so many hardware/software revisions for one model phone in just a couple years is a testament to how much they wish to f*ck over the consumer. They know damn well that people who buy apple stuff are generally willing to spend more for their phone, so they continue to manufacture reasons for them to upgrade.... I mean, every company does this to some degree.... Puts out a basic 1.0 version phone then releases a new and improved version in a year or so... but i just think Apple seems to be a little more blatant about pushing their customers into upgrading more frequently.

This is not new, Apple is not doing anything different than any other Handset OEM, its all about revisions, and updates, how many RAZR's did Motorola make and continue to update. Apple just has one device, instead of 20-30, so they make changes, it falls in line with their strategy on the laptop/desktop side new updates about every 12 months or so. Personally I have a 3G, love it, and would only upgrade if its a major hardware revision, which all the rumors shot minimal updates imho.

My thought on the S, and it would be cool if they could make the device "S"limmer...

It is no different to anything tech nowadays.

My Philips LCD TV is out of date and that's 1 year old. My LG KC910 is now a 910i (mine was 7months old and brand new - out that day when I got it). I am sure my nice shiny E8400 is now reduced to a "legacy" CPU. At least with Apple you can update the software *to* get more features. I cannot update my TV or 910 or E8400.

It is just the way it is the moment you buy it then it is out of date. They are no more f*cking over the consumer than anyone else, in fact they are doing it less.

Cars and car dealers seem to be the worst when each year another model appears cheaper and better than the one you're still paying off. And all that has done is to make your cars resale value drop another £1000.

Just the way of the world.

You don't have to upgrade. My first revision iPhone works just as well as it did when it was first released. I saw no incentive to upgrade to the current 3G. Depending on the hardware on the model, I may be inclined to grab this one. As for releasing new models, which, at least for their iPhone, the timing seems to be one a year, so far; I don't think that's bad at all. At least they're not $400 a pop anymore.

I love people like this making replies, They slate appel for having one phone. When there is othergroups making several phones per year. Of which are also upgraded or update models. Just look at HTC.

It is how you money as a company. Every single company does it.

3rd Generation Network Second Generation sounds stupid if thats what the S stands for
#10 PsykX on 08 Jun 2009 - 15:36
IMO Neowin should have wait 3 more hours to write an article that has their facts real about the new iPhone
In reality I'm a rumour addict of Apple, but Neowin wasn't meant for that and recently it's got a whole bunch of Apple rumours. If they're turning this way, good for me, but you know what I mean !
#11 Origamihl on 08 Jun 2009 - 15:39
Do you recognize they not pulling out "groundbreaking" things nowadays? They put things in lower models like acc. meter and coverflow or just changing the body and bumping up battery life and storage. Nothing NEW just new.

3 GS = 3G(S)print? iPhone for sprint maybe?..not

OLED is groundbreaking in my eyes. Do you currently use an iPhone? If you did you'd appreciate this much more.

It is not groundbreaking when your competitor said they are going to use it first.
#14 vetneufuse on 08 Jun 2009 - 15:49
I'd love to have an OLED iPod touch......
#15 StandingInAlley on 08 Jun 2009 - 15:51
15-20% battery life ? I think its because of hardware because as of now beta 5 of OS 3.0 sucks at battery life, my battery drains faster than 2.2.1

I really don't get why people buy iPhone...HTC Windows mobile is far better in both hardware and software feature.
#16.1 +veritas310 on 08 Jun 2009 - 15:58
That's your opinion. Nothing to get.

I've looked into HTC phones, and I find them all rather expensive. Even with 2-year contract Verizon wants you to fork over $350-$400 depending on the model. And they don't come with near the storage capacity of the iPhone.

this thing is supposed to be OLED? I can hear the fanboys saying how "MS copied Apple with the new Zune" from now.

That is true, and Microsoft already announced that Zune will have an OLED screen before Apple even did.

OLED is not groundbreaking. It is used in every Sony mp3 players and many other phones.
#18.1 +veritas310 on 08 Jun 2009 - 16:08
Did we state that OLED is groundbreaking? It's big news for iPhone users as it was not used before.

Yea, that's what people have been speculating, hoping it's true as this is a big upgrade in my eyes.

how? by having an OLED screen?
#19.2 +veritas310 on 08 Jun 2009 - 16:25
Yes, because without requiring a backlit screen, you can attain longer battery life. Does that not make sense?
#20 Scutley on 08 Jun 2009 - 16:14
so its going to be the same thing as before like Apple usually puts out, but Apple is going to hype as if it this new technology thing, and people will buy it then complain about it, realizing its pretty much the same thing as before.

Hmm... So they will release 3gS , and after 6 months, 3gSS ? And so on ? Apple will allways make mistakes with iPhone, so they will need to release it again and again. Will be too much "S" at the end!

Sorry for bad English!

They've been one per year, so far. Auto manufacturers do the same thing. You don't have to buy the new model, though.

It's waiting in limbo, along with the electric car, the robot housemaid, colonies on the moon, and the backpack jetpack.

I've had an OLED phone with an FM transmitter for months. 2nd to the technology, but first for the kudos, same old Apple!
#24 +houlty on 08 Jun 2009 - 18:52
maybe there should just be a wwdc roundup article???
#25 k7of9 on 08 Jun 2009 - 18:57
I assume it will have 300 new features?
#26 hotdog963al on 08 Jun 2009 - 19:22
Zune is miles ahead of anything Steve Jobs could ever produce with his bare hands.
#27 vetneufuse on 08 Jun 2009 - 19:26
So Apple copied Microsoft's Sync now with the voice features? oh wait MS copies Apple.... right....
#28 Xero on 08 Jun 2009 - 19:39
No voice control for older iPhones? That's some bull**** right there, wtf is so special that it needs new hardware for that?
#29 joemailey on 08 Jun 2009 - 19:41
Guess the iPhone 3GS is major disappointment.
Even less new hardware features than the iPhone 3G.

I wouldn't upgrade my iPhone 3G for it, but I dropped it and broke it 2 months ago. Currently don't have iPhone so must buy.
#30 everyonejoo on 08 Jun 2009 - 19:56
No OLED screen for the new iPhone?

I miss the front camera for iChat

After watching their promo video: http://www.apple.com/iphone/guidedtour/ its clear to me that ALOT of the features they tout are also now available to current Iphone users via the 3.0 firmware, I guess this just makes it a more convienant time to promote it?
